Last night, the BBC showed secret footage of how work on Primark garments had been outsourced to third parties in Southern India that used both home and child labour - both against Primark's ethical code (Source: Anon 2008a np).
Instead of accepting the BBC’s invitation to answer the accusations levelled against them, Primark decided to go to the web and talk directly to their clients thus bypassing the mass media channel. They built a micro-site to answer the BBC’s negative exposure and sought to address and assure consumers directly in a web-only strategy. This site was launched at the same time that the BBC programme went on air (Source: Jones et al 2009 p.933).
A journalist was brought in to put unscripted questions to Primark director Breege O'Donoghue and the footage was posted on its site at 9pm on Monday, the same time as the BBC documentary was screened. Lancaster said that releasing a statement before the programme aired helped the store to have more control, with headlines focusing on Primark axing the factories rather than child labour accusations. ‘We changed the news reporting because we moved the story on,' he said. But the BBC dismissed the store's claims. A spokesman said: ‘The right to reply process was handled in an exemplary fashion and included face-to-face meetings and considerable time for Primark to reply to the programme's findings. Primark had a fantastic opportunity to be interviewed by the programme and put its argument across but after, by its own admission, a period of internal debate, it decided not to face scrutiny.' Lancaster is the sole internal press officer, but Primark also uses freelancer Helen Penney. ABF's retained agency Citigate Dewe Rogerson has been handling media relations and government affairs during the crisis (Source: Magee 2008 np).

Jaina Lefevre nods and as soon as someone takes over, she stands up and curls her hands into fists ,then curls around Deets, holding tight. "Mom..we gotta go with her. Don't want her alone. It's scary alone. I 'member."
Remamian Takashi turns and looks up the hill twords coage she gives him a 'glare' like those of a mother scowling her son as she gives him a confused shrug and looks down at deb then back barking up at him "Gonna stand there?.... "
Deets Carroll holds her daughter tight. "I 'member too. Let's go."
Esha Rajal groaned at the new message on her PDA and just stuffed it back into her pocket. She'd figured the girl was okay, being looked after by Deets, of course, so she wasn't going to press the issue that she was to get the kid evac-ed if shit went wrong. So, she just stared down at her boots for a while. Way to go.
Simon Netizen: Seeing the Major was tended to, and knowing himself well enough to recognize his temper was still not in check, Simon turns slowly, lights another cigarette, and starts toward the city.
Jonathon Coage catches the glare and closes his eyes, feeling them burn from sleeplessness like pins and needles. He pulls in a deep breath and starts walking down the hill.
Jaina Lefevre gives Rai a hug and whispers. "Moms and I are gonna stay with Mom tonight. Stay at the partment if you want? Please? Maybe bring Kimi with you? Just..be safe okay? Gotta be with Mom."
Fern Sabre sighs watching the kids, they were so small to see such violence "you two okay?" looked at them both
Rai Pawpad takes the hanky and looks at it as though it were a foriegn object. And is startled by the sudden hug. He smiles. "Yeah, of course, I know where to stay, don't worry bout me."He kisses her cheek, quickly. "You go tak care of your mom."
Jaina Lefevre looks up at Fern and shakes her head, her hands still covered with her Mom's blood. "No. Not at all. Gonna go be with my Moms." She hugs Rai again and hurries off.
Janeiro Renard walked back toward Fern, and yawned, holding a fist over his mouth as he nodded to Fern, "Well, looks like Blackstar achieved a pyrrhic victory over the forces of malfeasance and oppression tonight." He smirked slightly, "Now the troops take the Major to the bunker, and rebuild her at considerable expense to the company. But, really, it should be worth it."
Jaina Lefevre hisses at Janeiro. "Be nice. That's my MOM!" She is so fed up with people tonight. "And they say *I* have bad manners. Fucktards." Good thing Deets is upset or she'd be yelling at Jai for her language. She hurries to catch the stretcher and her moms.
Fern Sabre nods and waves bye to her then turns to Jan smiling at his descriptions "yeah, I think it was worth it...I am quite relieved to see she is alive, I was worried when I heard about this duel" she also yawned when he did..."long night eh?"
A combination of very sore feet (ow, blisters) and low creativity means I'm not going to complete this year's Cardiff Photomarathon. This makes me very sad. I wish I could recapture the enthusiasm I had in the previous Photomarathons — the enthusiasm that inspired me to create Thing a Week. Maybe one day I'll get my groove back. Fingers crossed.

I'm uploading it here because it seems like the kind of picture that people might like to use to illustrate a blog post. Sometimes these bloggers give me credit too, which is very kind. But that's another story.

More than 60 teachers from the Lower Mainland gathered today at the Microsoft Centre of Excellence in downtown Vancouver to learn basic coding techniques from some of the best instructors in the industry – all to make sure BC students have the skills they need to succeed in today’s changing world.
Education Minister Mike Bernier joined teachers in an interactive ping pong ice breaker game. Teams had to create a simple algorithm to guide a blindfolded teammate to retrieve a ping pong ball. The game helps develop communication and critical thinking – vital skills needed for future success.

The Fall 2010 Student Hackathon brought in hundreds of students from 30 universities to NYU's Courant Institute for 24 hours of creative hacking on New York City startups' APIs.
Selected startups presented their technologies at the beginning of the event, and students formed groups to brainstorm and begin coding on their ideas. Many students worked into the night, foregoing sleep to fulfill their visions.
On Sunday afternoon students presented their projects to an audience including a judging panel, which selected the final winners.
hackNY hosts hackathons one each semester, as well as a Summer Fellows Program, which pairs quantitative and computational students with startups which can demonstrate a strong mentoring environment, a problem for a student to work on, a person to mentor them, and a place for them to work. Startups selected to host a student are expected to compensate student Fellows. Students enjoy free housing together and a pedagogical lecture series to introduce them to the ins and outs of joining and founding a startup.

Today I finished the first phase of the PHP code I have been writing for the past week or so, to integrate with MS SQL on our server at work. It integrates with a well known rental management software package which we'll be using at Chequer Mead as an inventory manager. The script I've written allows us to add items and record PAT tests much quicker and will little fuss, compared to the integrated software technique. Let's hope there aren’t too many bugs! :-/
