I've taught compilers for many years, like CS 134. A compiler is a program that translates your words into a program that can be run by a computer. It is more complicated than that of course, but that's the idea.

For the final exam, we compiled programs to generate fractals, showing the Mandelbrot set. This is pure math, but it has beautiful images illustrating chaos (like my life!)

These are images from programs produced by a working compiler... [I remember my words, "Don't complain so much, you signed up for this class!" Actually, Caltech kids are pretty smart, they learn fast.] We used tools by Jef Poskanzer (photostream) to produce the final images that you see here.

The program to compute the images uses fixed-point arithmetic, with a fractional part of 28 bits. This image shows the numerical error under high magnification.

Added support for the EyefieldManager. Modeled the EyelidDemo from the example set provided with the eclipse plug-in.

Added support for a GridFieldManager. With the grid field manager, I can specify the number of row and the number of columns that the grid should have. Then I can go ahead an place fields in it. All the code for the grid manager is generated from the model translation.

The default Vertical/HorizontalFieldManagers do not allow setting the height and width of the managers. Implemented CustomHorizontal/VerticalManager and included this in the language.

Provided support for modeling the CheckBoxField as well as the separator field. Image show a very simple screen generated from translating the model on the right.

Even though, all the code was automated there was the cost of producing a class for every screen. The code generation tool was design in this fashion, but for this case one class would have been nescesary for the bug screen, which could be then initialized with the necessary parameters of each bug.

New set of bugs added to the BugIt application.

New Copy/Paste functions added to the designer.

Added support for basic menus. Each menu construct, once the model is translated, is separated by a separator in the final application.
