Here we see a Black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), in flight across a snowy December sky.

  

They are found in much of the Palearctic including Canada and Europe. In Canada it is called the Common black-headed gull.

This is one of two resident Eagles who fish from the telegraph pole and fishing pier.

  

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus), derives it's name from the Greek for 'Sea eagle', and the 'bald' denotation actually derives from an older meaning of 'white headed'.Bald Eagles can be up to forty inches in length with a wingspan up to seven and a half feet and can weigh up to 6.3kgs. The females are generally 25% larger than the males.

Therefore, the answer to your question is:

 

You do NOT need VLC running, nor do you necessarily need to download the MP4 file, IF your primary goal is to get the sound working when playing directly from the My Cloud website.

 

Why the sound might be missing on the My Cloud website:

The Lagoon is one of seven Migratory Bird Sanctuaries in British Columbia, and an important stopover for birds journeying between North and South America. Visitors include geese and Swans, Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons, plus many other species of birds.

  

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) is a wading bird in the Heron family Ardeidae and found in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Galapagos Islands. One of the largest of Herons, it has a head to tail length of 01-137 centimetres (36-54 inches) and a wingspan of 187-201 centimetres (66-79 inches). They are found where my family live, and naturally very wary of mankind, flying off as soon as you are within fifty to one hundred yards of them.

For the past 2 days I have been testing my new Nikon P1000 camera out in my yard and neighborhood. I am very impressed. You have to haul a 3.5 lb camera and a hefty tripod. I used my Manfrotto 3130 tripod with a fluid head that weighs 8 lbs for telephoto shots. The fluid head facilitates video pans, but even it drifted down while shooting at far out lengths such as 3000 mm indicating a need for counter weights such as sand bags or a heavier duty tripod. You also have to use a remote control for shutter depressions and controlling the camera. I purchased a Nikon ML-L7 remote which did the job very well.

The Coolpix P1000 does not use .nef for raw files. It uses .nrw format. I could not use Adobe PS CS6 to read these files. I started saving files in both raw and jpg formats instead of raw exclusively as I do on my Nikon DLSR camera. I had to download Nikon Capture NX-D which came with Nikon Picture Control and Nikon Transfer 2 which I have not tested yet. I Downloaded and installed a Nikon NRW codec. I could not see NRW files in Photoshop CS6, Adobe Bridge CS6 or View NX V2. But I could see them in Capture NX-D, Windows photos, Win Explorer, Win movie Maker, Photo Gallery and Win Photo Viewer.

It pays to purchase a 77 mm clear filter cover because the possibility of scratching the huge lens looms very high.

The Jpg image size is stored in a 12:9 ratio. My other Nikon cameras are sized in a12:8 ratio. Also many functions are accessed by menu rather than buttons common on Nikon DLSR’s.

I have not tested the bird or moon modes on the P1000 yet, but they look promising on paper.

All in all I am very pleased with the Nikon P1000 and look forward to having a lot of fun with it, especially for birding.

Photograph taken at 12:41pm on Wednesday 19th March 2025 at an altitude of sixty eight metres in the grounds of Scadbury Park nature reserve, located off Old Perry St, Chislehurst BR7 6P, in the borough of Bromley. It is also a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. It is over 300 acres, and is part of an extensive wildlife corridor together with Petts Wood and the Jubilee Country Park.

This photograph was taken at an altitude of Fifty seven metres at 10:04am on a cold and wintry morning, on December 12th 2022, following overnight snow and a temperature of -3 degrees, off Chessington Avenue in Bexleyheath, Kent.Here we see a Rock Dove or Feral pigeon (Columba livia) perched up on a rooftop.

  

They are a wild ancestor of domestic world pigeons. A common sight in UK gardens, and traditionally seen on London postcards of Piccadilly circus until the feeding of pigeons was banned, they can weigh up to 370g with a wingspan of 34cms. There are approximately 550,000 breeding pairs in the UK.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Two metres (Sea level) at 19:08pm on Wednesday 17th May 2023 on an unnamed and uninhabited by mankind wilderness, some distance from Dawley Passage Provincial Park and Meares Island in the Alberni-Clayoquot region of British Columbia in Canada.

  

I was stationed in a seventy year old house I was renting in Campbell Street, Tofino in British Columbia in Canada and booked a place on a twenty three feet long Zodiac inflatable in full life saving gear with Remote Passages Marine Excursions at 51 Wharf Street in Tofino.

  

This is a magnificent full grown adult American Black Bear (Ursus Americanus), medium sized bears native to North America, and found in abundance in the Yukon territory and Alaska and remote island in British Columbia such as this. Black bears have a small tail, up to nine inches long foot length and males can weigh up to 250kgs. They have poor long distance vision but excellent smell, and this adult knew we were away in the water before we ever saw it.

This series is part of an ongoing research on visual ways to dissolve pornographic imagery in abstraction and absurd.

 

For the Scrambled series, using video footage downloaded from Internet, I exploit the artifacts, errors, blurs inherent to heavy digital compression and incomplete files.

 

Dozens of snapshots are generated. Here, the creative process in itself rely on selecting the right images : identifiable as pornographic, but somehow deactivated.

The centre cares for injured birds of prey that would not have survived in the wild due to illness or damage caused by mankind or vehicles. The birds used in the flight demonstrations are free to fly away at any point, and some actually do! They are fitted with tracking devices.

  

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus Leucocephalus), derives it's name from the Greek for 'Sea eagle', and the 'bald' denotation actually derives from an older meaning of 'white headed'.Bald Eagles can be up to forty inches in length with a wingspan up to seven and a half feet and can weigh up to 6.3kgs. The females are generally 25% larger than the males.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Three metres at 20:22pm on Thursday 25th May 2023 around sunset at Patricia Bay , a body of salt water that extends East from the Saanich Inlet and forms part of the North Saanich shoreline in the District of North Saanich in British Columbia. It features a beautiful park which is at the south end of the Scoter Trail. Formerly known as Union Bay, the bay was named after Princess Patricia of Connaught, daughter of the Duke of Connaught who was Governor General in 1912.

  

The park has ties to transportation and the waterfront, and their pivotal role in the development of North Saanich. It is also tied to the development of the Victoria International Airport and military aviation efforts during the Second World War. In 1937, the airport was developed as one of six Royal Canadian Air Force Station training facilities on Vancouver Island.

  

The land was originally settled by the Tseycum First Nation (Union Bay Indian Reserve No.4) , one of four Saanich villages of Southern Vancouver Island in the area and part of the Northern Straits Coast Salish language group.

  

In the Sencoten langauge Tseycum is spelled Wsikem and means Land of Clay. The languages spoken include Lkwungen, Malchosen, Semiahmoo, SENĆOŦEN andT’Sou-ke and in 2023 the Chief is Tanya Jimmy, who was elected in July 2019. The Tseycum people have five reserves located at:

  

Bare Island 9, Goldstream 13, Pender Island 8, Saturna Island 7 and Union Bay 4.

Here we see, Sciurus Carolinensis (Eastern Gray Squirrel or Grey Squirrel), a tree squirrel native to North America and first introduced to the UK in the 1870's. Though it was largely responsible for the decimation of our own native red squirrel population, those are now on the increase and found in certain parts of the UK including Scotland. The Greys are still an ecologically essential natural forester regenerator.

The Canon EOS R5 is Canon's most advanced, complete camera in a long, long time. It has a few flaws (most notably a tendency to overheat when shooting the most demanding video codecs), but it has a very long list of virtues, including high resolution (45Mpx), great high ISO performance and dynamic range, fast burst rates (12 FPS mechanical and 20 FPS Electronic), deep buffers, great IBIS (sensor stabilization), and a truly awesome focus system. Add an amazing amount of video options and great ergonomics, and this is a camera that I simply love using. Bottom line: I bought one. Here's my review coverage:

Here we see an adult Red-breasted goose (Branta ruficollis) from Eurasia, and sadly currently classified as vulnerable. This goose is an example of hybrid specification, being the result of ancient interbreeding between the Brant goose and the white cheeked goose, some 3.5 million years ago.

Here we see a Eurasian nuthatch or wood nuthatch (Sitta europaea), a small passerine bird found throughout the Palearctic and in Europe. First described in 1758, this is part of a family of similar looking Nuthatch species and is a small bird with short tail and wings and long pointed bill.

Here we see, Sciurus Carolinensis (Eastern Gray Squirrel or Grey Squirrel), a tree squirrel native to North America and first introduced to the UK in the 1870's. Though it was largely responsible for the decimation of our own native red squirrel population, those are now on the increase and found in certain parts of the UK including Scotland. The Greys are still an ecologically essential natural forester regenerator.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Seven metres at 11.23am on Monday 29th May 2014 off 2903 Ocean Boulevard, Victoria, on the Esquimalt Lagoon Migratory Bird Sanctuary, on the Juan De Fuca Strait, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada.

  

The Lagoon is one of seven Migratory Bird Sanctuaries in British Columbia, and an important stopover for birds journeying between North and South America. Visitors include geese and Swans, Bald Eagles and Great Blue Herons, plus many other species of birds.

  

The Great Blue Heron (Ardea Herodias) is a wading bird in the Heron family Ardeidae and found in North America, Central America, the Caribbean and Galapagos Islands. One of the largest of Herons, it has a head to tail length of 01-137 centimetres (36-54 inches) and a wingspan of 187-201 centimetres (66-79 inches). They are found where my family live, and naturally very wary of mankind, flying off as soon as you are within fifty to one hundred yards of them.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Twenty one metres, at 12:38pm on Monday 9th January 2023, off Constitution Hill and Spur Road in front of Buckingham Palace with the Union flag at full mast, in The Mall next to Green Park and St James's Park in Central London.

  

The roads were totally sealed off by the Police as sections of The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons) and The band of the Household Cavalry rode and marched from the Palace up the Mall and back.

Formed in 1969, with both regiments history dating back to the mid-17th century, this unit is now part of the Household Cavalry.

  

It is the second-most senior regiment in the British Army and operates as both an armoured reconnaissance unit and a ceremonial guard of the Monarch, King Charles III. In 1982, it sent detachments to the Falklands War, where they supported The Parachute Regiment in the Battle of Wireless Ridge.

  

In 1992, the two Household Cavalry units’ ceremonial troops were united into the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment (HCMR), and their operational troops into the Household Cavalry Regiment (HCR). The Blues and Royals contribute two squadrons to the HCR and one squadron to the HCMR. They are based in Windsor and central London respectively.

  

Since 1992, squadrons of The Blues and Royals have served with the HCR in Bosnia in 1994-95 and Kosovo in 1999. Members of The Blues and Royals also regularly deployed to Iraq (2003-11) and Afghanistan (2001-14).

Hold hard the breath and bend up every spirit for this lowly compression technology... (Had to take a few while on vacation, mostly of ruins. Blue water is lovely but it's been soooo over done and ruins and cool looking trees are much more interesting :-). Digital shooters everywhere with thine touch screen ipads, with thine SD or Compact Flash cards, with thine f 3.5 to 5.6 mid range zoom, with thine downsampled encoded and bitrate peeling codec's, with thine white flour and strobes and baby launcher. With thine Photoshop stop action color gamut correcting talents. Who hath not noble lustre in their eyes! Tonight it is once more into the darkroom. I shall set my teeth and stretch my nostril wide! For I am worth my breeding!

Film is my steed, my faithful steed. The enlarger my unsheathed sword!

These are my son's ipod earphones, the iconic look that Apple have created. A musical zeitgeist.

 

I am afraid I am not a fan of the ipod. It is style over substance in my opinion, although there is no doubt it is a beautifully made piece of kit, and a very clever interface.

I want a music player to do just that - play music - and very well. I don't want it to make phone calls, or play games.

 

I prefer my trusty iriver h140. It stores 40 gigs of music and has incredible sound and playback settings that a sound engineer would be more than happy with.

 

It has an open source operating system that is continually being improved by any number of geeks around the world, and unlike Apple, these improvements are designed to make the music listening experience better, not to find better ways of getting you to download music from itunes or buy pointless apps.

What I like most about the iriver is that it is multi-codec, so if I want to play a FLAC file or an OGG VORBIS file, I can; and as these files are far superior to mp3 I often do.

 

I object to being told by Apple that I can only play the format that they want me to play on an ipod, which is why I don't have one.

 

I don't use the in ear type of earphone as in the picture. I prefer Grado SR60s. Unfortunately I cannot justify spending over £100 on headphones, but the SR60s come in under this, and the bass sound quality is equivalent to that of pro headphones.

They are made by a small company in Brooklyn NY, and I have to say that they look really cheap and plasticky, so if you worry about looking cool (which I don't) you won't want to wear a pair. However the sound quality is stunning - which after all, is the point.

The Canon EOS R5 is Canon's most advanced, complete camera in a long, long time. It has a few flaws (most notably a tendency to overheat when shooting the most demanding video codecs), but it has a very long list of virtues, including high resolution (45Mpx), great high ISO performance and dynamic range, fast burst rates (12 FPS mechanical and 20 FPS Electronic), deep buffers, great IBIS (sensor stabilization), and a truly awesome focus system. Add an amazing amount of video options and great ergonomics, and this is a camera that I simply love using. Bottom line: I bought one. Here's my review coverage:

Photograph taken at an altitude of One hundred and seventeen metres at 10:38am on Monday 8th May off the Sea to sky highway 99 and Shannon falls Road, at Shannon falls in Squamish, British Columbia, Canada.

  

Known as Kwékwetxwm, Shannon Falls holds particular significance for the Squamish First Nations people, the area’s first inhabitants. One legend tells that Say-noth-ka, a two-headed sea serpent, created the falls by repeatedly slithering up and down the mountainside. Shannon falls are British Columbia's third tallest waterfalls, dropping an impressive 335 metres(1,105 feet), with wonderful rock climbs to it's South face at 'Local boys do good', 'The gobsmacking wall', and 'Klahanie Crack'.

This is a Blue Morpho (Morpho Peleides) butterfly, one of the largest butterflies in the world with a wingspan up to eight inches. Light reflects from the microscopic scales on their wingbacks, giving a vivid iridescent appearance, and they are mainly seen active and in flight, resting only briefly. They are found in the tropical rainforests of Latin America from Mexico to Columbia.

Photograph taken at an altitude of Eighteen metres at 11:38pm on Tuesday 30th May 2023 off the West Coast Road 14, on the shoreline of French Beach Provincial Park.

  

Here we see a Red-breasted Sapsucker (Sphyrapicus ruber), one of four sapsucker species, woodpeckers that regularly drill holes through bark to feed on tree sap. Sapsuckers maintain and defend extensive systems of sap wells, which other species such as the Rufous Hummingbird feed from.

  

French Beach lies within the traditional territory of the T’Sou-ke First Nations people. Their name comes from the Sook tribe of Straits Salishans, from the SENĆOŦEN language word T'Sou-ke, the name of the species of Stickleback fish that live in the estuary of the river .

 

Their economy was based on hunting, fishing, and gathering, and extended families among the Straits people owned the lands and resources, which could not be sold, only inherited.

Situated on the scenic Strait of Juan de Fuca on the west coast of southern Vancouver Island, French Beach Park is a 55 Hectares site and can be accessed via Highway 14, 20km west of Sooke. It took it's name from pioneer James French who took two years to travel from New Brunswick to Victoria. His home and favourite beach would become French Beach Park in 1974.

The Canon EOS R5 is Canon's most advanced, complete camera in a long, long time. It has a few flaws (most notably a tendency to overheat when shooting the most demanding video codecs), but it has a very long list of virtues, including high resolution (45Mpx), great high ISO performance and dynamic range, fast burst rates (12 FPS mechanical and 20 FPS Electronic), deep buffers, great IBIS (sensor stabilization), and a truly awesome focus system. Add an amazing amount of video options and great ergonomics, and this is a camera that I simply love using. Bottom line: I bought one. Here's my review coverage:
