At work we have to go from Code Yellow to Code Orange. You will know I am talking about measures that have to be taken against the spreading of the Covid-19 virus.
My photo of a begonia symbolises Code Orange in the communication towards employees: it is orange, but with a hint of yellow: we are trying to look upon the bright side!

Ottawa Parliament Buildings - 20101028-08
Parliament Hill is a nine-hectare (0.09 km2) site in downtown Ottawa. It is home to Canada’s Parliament Buildings, the seat of the country’s federal government. Parliament Hill’s open grounds — a rarity among national parliaments — provide a place to gather for celebration or protest and are a National Historic Site. An excellent example of the gothic revival architecture style, the Parliament Buildings — Parliament (Centre Block) and two office buildings (East and West blocks) — officially opened on 6 June 1866. The Library of Parliament is the only part of the original Centre Block to have survived a fire in 1916. A Memorial Chamber and Peace Tower were added to the rebuilt Centre Block in honour of fallen First World War soldiers. Happy Canada Day to my fellow Canadians!
I took this photo shortly after acquiring my first DSLR. I had fumbled my way through using it in Ecuador, basically as an expensive point and shoot, so decided to take a basic photography course at our local college to learn more. One assignment was to visit Parliament Hill and take photos both inside and outside of this important location.

For some reason I never got around to posting more shots from Portugal from last winter. It was by far my most succesful trip this year, so time to change that. On a beautiful sunny day, retro blue CP 1413 leads IR 869 over the Ovil viaduct. This shot was a little harder to get than expected. The viaduct is easily accessed by a pathway to one of the houses, but the crossing was being guarded by a quite angry barking dog. After several attempts to find a way around I decided I wasn't going to miss the shot for such a stupid reason and just walked up there anyways doing my best to be the more intimidating one. The dog was very displeased by my continued presence but thankfully stayed on the other side of the track. The orange trees are an ever present sight along the Duoro and I ate more than a few while waiting in various spots....

Tall Globe-thistle: European species of globe thistle in the family Asteraceae. It is native to central and eastern Europe from Germany and Italy east into Russia. The species has escaped cultivation and become established in the wild in scattered locations in eastern Canada and the northern United States.
It is the largest of all globe thistles, a branching perennial herb up to 150 cm (60 inches or 5 feet) tall. One plant can produces several flower heads, each with a very nearly spherical array of white or pale blue disc florets but no ray florets.
Brown-belted Bumble Bee (lower centre): It is native to much of the United States except for the Southwest, and to the southernmost regions of several of the provinces of Canada. This bumblebee can occupy many kinds of habitat, including meadows, wetlands, agricultural fields, and urban areas, even densely populated cities.
Western Honey Bee (upper right): One of the first domesticated insects, and the primary species maintained by beekeepers to this day for both its honey production and pollination activities. With human assistance, the western honey bee now occupies every continent except Antarctica. (Wikipedia)

We visited the Ornamental Gardens, part of Ottawa's Experimental Farm a couple of weeks ago. These thistle flowers were just alive with bees and other pollinators. I was lucky to capture this flower head with two different bee species.

Last spring, this male mountain bluebird is enduring a storm of heavy, wet snow while perched in a cattle pasture. Even in such weather, they do their best to find insects, insect eggs, or insect pupae.
The great grey owl is much better adapted for handling such inclement weather, but over the years, I have been very impressed with the tenacity of mountain bluebirds as they cope with wild swings in the spring weather.
Weston-super-Mare's new lamp posts have been marked with Morse Code on them. The Morse Code givess the street name the post is sighted. This one is Pier Square.

An Owosso-Cadillac run on the GLC heads west through Clare with a pair of SD40-2s sporting a few different shades of blue. Clare is normally as far north as the Owosso crew will work, but delays on the north end of the railroad prevented the Cadillac crew from making it south to Clare for several days in a row, creating a need for a long-distance run from Owosso to get traffic back up to speed. The uncommon SD40-2 pair was put together to get the train over the road, much to our delight.
Nearly stalling, G&E Shifter R202 crawls across the timber supports of the WV Hwy 20 girder bridge at walking speed, fighting the steep 2.2% grade from Peaser Jct to Quinwood Tunnel.
The seasoned C&O crew sure put this pair of “lightning bolts” through their paces getting their second cut of 28 loads from Green Valley up the mountain on the rusted, worn out jointed rail of the former Hominy Creek sub of the NF&G. What a show!
When I was working on this it reminded my of those DNA coding trays thus the title. Base image created using a Canon PowerShot camera and processed using Photoshop, and Redfield filters.
