Many people don't realise that Britain has a few native species of cockroach. They are all small & mostly limited to the south coast counties. Lesser cockroach is the smallest of them, males averaging 7mm long & females just 6mm. Coastal shingle is a known habitat for them & it was nice to turn a few up under the pebbles. They are the first native cockroaches I've ever seen.
Tawny Cockroach (Ectobius pallidus). First time I've spotted one of these- wondered what it was at first. Focus stacked using zerene
Found on Hilltop Rd bibbulmun track just southwest of Hilltop Lookout, ESE of Walpole. Western Australia, Australia.
Bark Cockroach - Laxta sp.? Found under bark of log/fallen tree in tingle and karri forest.
Found in this general vicinity: 34.98544S 116.76392E.
Single exposure, uncropped, handheld, in situ. Canon MT-24EX flash unit, Ian McConnachie diffuser.
This cockroach was in full sun on the steps to our apartment complex in Olhão - possibly the most cockroach-unfriendly conditions one could find. I've no idea how in got there - possibly fell out of one of the cleaners' trollies that were bounced up and down the steps at frequent intervals. Needless to say I kept a careful eye inside the apartment in case it had friends.
Female with egg pouch. Suprised to find one in my garden.
Vrouwtje met ei-pakket. Verrast deze in mijn tuin te vinden.
Try as I might I couldn't get a decent shot of it! Each time I got it on my hand, it ran straight back off of it, and on the ground, it ran like the clappers! So this was all I managed!! Still lovely to see in any case!

The Giant Burrowing Cockroach is the world's heaviest cockroach, weighing up to 30 grams and reaching 8 cm in length. These smooth, shiny brown cockroaches never have wings and live in permanent burrows in the soil where females care for their young.
The giant burrowing cockroach is also known as the rhinoceros cockroach, Queensland giant cockroach, and litter bug. These cockroaches are native to Australia and mostly found in tropical parts of Queensland.
Nymph (last instar) of Austral Ellipsidion Cockroach, Ellipsidion humerale
I like seeing these native cockroaches in the garden.

Ironically after shooting another wasp species much later that I finally got it actual name....it's an Emerald cockroach wasp. This came about when a friend of mine, Victor positively id the other wasp species as Jewel wasp which I had photograhed. While trying to fish out more info on the jewel, stumble upon a web site that described the exact species of the wasp shown. It has got a very unusual preying strategy and a strange reproductive behavior. Read more of this wasp....

New mug for Christmas. Got cockroaches all over it. Not just painted, but as raised bumps to give it a bit of 3-D. I love it!
I think this is (or it was) an undescribed species of Balta . From what I gather there is now work being done on cockroaches in the north of the state. Maybe it has a name now?
This came in under our dog's food bowl. It had to tolerate a few photos before it was sent back outside :-)
I'm not sure if this was teneral, but it was larger than our usual garden finds, in a curl of leaf. It has very long cerci too.
Caught this cocky on my window, never seen the underside in such detail before. My glass/window was filthy, I spent quite a bit of time cleaning up the smudges and dust speckle particles that lit up with the flash.
