Come with me on this cobblestone river,
to make happy our new-found days,
and fill our hearts with the art-
of each other's eyes,
and the song of our endearing words.
“Cologne, a 2,000-year-old city spanning the Rhine River in western Germany, is the region’s cultural hub. A landmark of High Gothic architecture set amid reconstructed old town, the twin-spired Cologne Cathedral is also known for its gilded medieval reliquary and sweeping river views.” My great-grandfather was from Cologne, so the beautiful city that we visited several years ago seemed very special to me....
A treasure in Kingsville, Ontario’s historic Lakeside Park is this lovely cobblestone bridge. The bridge, built in 1928, crosses over Mill Creek which feeds into Lake Erie at the south end of the park. In 2007, Lakeside Park received a heritage designation.
It's not just the dark days that have been getting me down (see my last posting). The war in Ukraine, the mass shootings in my own country (USA) are hard to bear. A few days ago somebody even gunned down gay and trans people at a club in Colorado. Just because they are gay or trans, apparently. Russia's Putin may have a similar attitude. Yet his Army is bombing and killing anybody and everybody just because they happen to be Ukrainian. All of this reminds me of the bleak history of human persecution, including what took place in the country that is now my home.
These small stones topped with brass (called stumbling stones) pay tribute to the victims of Nazi persecution and terror here in the city of Bamberg. There are 136 of them, all placed on the sidewalk in front of the homes where the victims lived as part of an art project directed by Gunter Demnig since 2004. 70,000 similar stones can be seen in many locations throughout Germany and Europe. The five stones here on Keßlerstraße contain these inscriptions in German:
Here lived
Isodor Forchheimer, born 1887, imprisoned at Dachau 1938, deported to Riga 1941, murdered.
Johanna Forchheimer, born Michels 1888, deported to Riga 1941, murdered.
Cantor Julius Schapiro, born 1895, arrested, in Buchenwald concentration camp, deceased 1945.
Ruth Schapiro, born 1925, deported to the east 1941, declared to be dead.
Elenore Schapiro, born Hahn 1896, deported to the east 1941, declared to be dead.

Historic Stone Street in the wee hours. This street dates back to the 1600s. It is said to be one the the oldest, if not the oldest street in Manhattan.
“The medieval village of St-Émilion perches above vineyards renowned for producing full-bodied, deeply coloured red wines and is easily the most alluring of all the region's wine towns. Named after Émilion, a miracle-working Benedictine monk who lived in a cave here between AD 750 and 767, it soon became a stop on pilgrimage routes, and the village and its vineyards are now Unesco-listed. Today, despite masses of tourists descending onto the town, it's well worth venturing 40km east from Bordeaux to experience St-Émilion's magic, particularly when the sun sets over the valley and the limestone buildings glow with halo-like golden hues.”
This town was so picturesque, it took my breath away! The view from the top was amazing, and we did not encounter hordes of tourists....do you wonder what lies beyond the lace? I did.
A short series of black and white shots taken in Dragør at the eastern part of Amager, which is an island east of Copenhagen. The Copenhagen Airport is close to Dragør.
The old part of Dragør is full of well-preserved houses from the 18th and 19th centuries and the streets are cobblestoned and there are plenty of cosy little alleys. A truly magical place.
The shots are available as box set printed on A4-sized Hahnemühle Photo Rag paper on a Canon imagePROGRAM PRO-300. Shop now at roosholm.dk/
