I took this photo of the Cobb at Lyme Regis in 1995, using a Bronica ETRS rollfilm SLR. Lyme remains one of my favourite towns! 2389_120B192_07.jpg. Many thanks for views, comments and favourites.

The Cobb - Lyme Regis Harbour

The harbour for Lyme Regis is called the Cobb. No satisfactory explanation of the name exists but a man made construction has served as a refuge here since at least 1313. The earliest known drawing, made in 1539, shows a basic shape similar to the present construction, and this was built after the westerly gales breached the breakwater in 1824. There have been additions since that date but the major part of the Cobb dates from then.

On Friday I had a day out in Dorset with Jim, Darren and Lee. We visited several locations during the day and overall, it was a fun, but long and tiring day as we didn't get back home until midnight.

Setting my alarm for 3:30am and leaving at 4am we left Plymouth for our first stop, The Cobb at Lyme Regis. We got there about 30 minutes before sunrise and set up on top of the sea wall here. The sunrise wasn't the most spectacular but it was a good start to the day.

We didn't spend too long here after the sun had risen as we all needed breakfast, so we headed into Bridport for a nice fry up before heading to our next location.

The Cobb is an old stone wall forming an extensive harbour and believed to date from the time of Edward I. The origin of the name is unknown, but there are records of an ancient feast called the “Cobb Ale Feast”.

With a length of 870 feet, the curve of the Cobb forms a great lead in line towards the sea.

As much as I appreciated comments and feedback I would request no Awards or flashy gif comments, please. They will be deleted and you will be blocked. Thank you.

The 'S' shape of The Cobb is clearly visible in this image. The inside of Cobb is not normally lit but I have taken advantage of two fisherman's trucks which were parked up with their highlights on.

Some more shots of the Cobb of Lyme Regis, shot in stormy conditions. This was taken at dusk, while trying to keep the tripod steady and everything including myself from being blown off the Cobb.

I played around with some of John Leech's Lightroom presets which he generously shared with me.
