A Barred Owl sits in the rain in a forest in the Pacific Northwest.

Sometimes you just have to go for it and this boar did, despite having an injured foot I watched him successfully catch large salmon. Nature never ceases to amaze with their resilience.

This bear was observed during a five day photographic trip in the reserve. We stayed on a large sailboat based in the sheltered bay and ventured out each day by zodiac in search of the resident wildlife but specifically Grizzly Bears.

I loved watching bears they always have such unique personalities and of course are beautiful creatures worthy always of our respect.

Black Bears are so fascinating to watch with their interesting individual personalities. A beautiful and too often misunderstood animal that is deserving of our profound respect. For one they help make our forests so beautiful with the way they fertilize the forests with the fish they eat.

Gotta love the interactions between bears

Last night, I posted an image of two large Grizzly Bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) battling for breeding rights in the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Reserve north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada.

As in most cases in wildlife cases involving the upper predatory species, the participants can suffer some serious wounds. In this case, the loser had a few major cuts and bruises but will in the future compete again.

In the previous two evening posts, I had posted images of a pair of Grizzly Bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) fighting and then the loser hobbling away.

I failed to indicate that what got us to this place initially was that the brown coloured bear had actually been copulating with a female in a small meadow along the shore of the inlet.

We were travelling in our Zodiac and stopped to photograph the pair which had finished their breeding activity and were in the process of grazing when their attention was diverted to the edge of the woods from which the dark coloured bear emerged and charged.

Once the bears had finished the fight with the the brown coloured bear moving out of the meadow, the dark bear noticed us in the area and came towards us to investigate. This is the view we got when it stood up to get a better look at the boat load of photographers. It then dropped down to all four feet and wandered off along the shore.

The Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Reserve along the coast north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada is truly a remarkable place to view the beauty and behaviour of one of our most impressive wildlife creatures.

A lone male Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis) roams the shores of the coastal inlet in the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Reserve looking for food and looking for love. It is spring time in the valley and the bears are actively replenishing their body reserves used during their winter sleep and it is also the time when potential mates are looking for each other to continue the cycle of life in the grizzly bear world.

The Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Reserve is located northeast of Prince Rupert along the west coast of British Columbia, Canada.

I had the good fortune to visit the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Reserve north of Prince Rupert on the British Columbia, Canada on a wildlife photography trip.

During that 5 day trip, we witnessed two large male Grizzly Bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) fight over female for breeding rights. It lasted for awhile with lots of blood and water droplets flying through the air and a whole lot of roaring. The dark coloured bear eventually defeated the light coloured bear which hobbled off with some serious cuts to its body.

It is something I likely will never see again but it was, how do I say it, breath-taking to witness first hand. The west coast of British Columbia is quite remote and rugged so it should safe guard creatures like these for many years to come.

The final images in my series was a pleasure to be in their presence. These beautiful animals deserve all the respect in the world and too often are severely misunderstood.

During a photographic tour of the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Reserve we had the opportunity to see a number of different Grizzly Bear (Ursus arctos horribilis), some distant and some a lot closer. This is a three year old, likely just driven off by its mother to fend for itself.

This close-up of the claws gives you an idea what they are supplied with for tools to dig for food, for defence when attacked or fighting for breeding rights. This image just gives you a pause to reflect how Mother Nature outfits each creature for life in their particular niche in the wild.
