The Copernicus Sentinel-2B satellite takes us over Semarang, Indonesia. A port city on the north coast of Java, Semarang is the fifth-largest city in the country, covering some 374 sq km and home to just over 1.5 million people.
This true-colour image shows the heart of the bustling regional commercial centre in the bottom-left, where a range of industries from fishing to glass manufacture and textiles operate. Exports of rubber, coffee, shrimp, tobacco, and cacao, among other products, pass through the city’s harbour, which can also be seen in the bottom-left of the image.
The Java Sea dominates the left part of the image. Flood management remains an ongoing challenge for the area, with the city being prone to tidal flooding.
The island nation of Indonesia is particularly vulnerable to sea-level rise. Some parts of Semarang, such as the residential area of Candi Baru, shown in the bottom-left of the image, stand just above sea level.
In the right of the image we can see mainly agricultural land, with rice fields stretching across the landscape. Land subsidence has been widely reported in the area, particularly in the northern part of Semarang, accelerated by population increases and urban development.
The impacts of subsidence include the wider expansion of (coastal) flooding areas, cracking of buildings and infrastructure, and increased inland seawater intrusion.
Sentinel-2 is a two-satellite mission for land monitoring, providing imagery of soil and water cover, inland waterways and coastal areas, for Europe’s Copernicus environmental monitoring programme. Wide swath Sentinel-2 data can also contribute to monitoring land-use change that triggers erosion, forest and wildfires, and the onset of floods.
This image, which was captured on 9 May 2018, is also featured on the Earth from Space programme, here www.esa.int/spaceinvideos/Videos/2018/11/Earth_from_Space...

Thames Sailing Barge
A Thames sailing barge was a type of commercial sailing boat common on the River Thames in London in the 19th century. The flat-bottomed barges were perfectly adapted to the Thames Estuary, with its shallow waters and narrow rivers.

Long Beach Peninsula experienced high tides and high swells at 9pm on September 10, 2022. The tropical cyclone Kay brought flooding and rain to coastal regions of California. The Long Beach Peninsula in particular to 62nd Pl is an area of concern for the city and its homeowners because of its narrow shoreline and low-lying land relative to the sea floor. City crews can be seen building a berm and reconstructing it as high tides erode the wall and damaging homes.

High tide during nor'easter makes living along the coast challenging, especially for driving on roads built on salt marsh.
King tides completely ate up Burfoot Beach and turned the freshwater lagoon into a bay. You'd need tall rubber boots or waders to continue on the trail.

During a King Tide weekend Alfonso Macías-Tapia works with Old Dominion University student volunteers for the “Measure the Muck” event in Norfolk, Va.
Macías-Tapia is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in oceanography from Old Dominion University, where his research focuses on measuring water quality impacts from coastal flooding. He has also taken a leadership role in “Measure the Muck,” a community science initiative for flood water quality monitoring.

Students from Old Dominion University and Virginia Tech assisted Virginia Sea Grant extension agent Michelle Covi on a resilience survey in Hampton, Virginia, through a 4-VA grant. The students went door to door in three coastal neighborhoods prone to flooding and asked residents about their experiences with flooding.
An overview of the survey results will provide the City of Hampton with flood planning information, like first-floor home elevations in vulnerable neighborhoods. June 4, 2019.

Col. Ed Chamberlayne, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Baltimore District commander, signs an agreement to begin an approximately $3-million, three-year study with the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments on possible ways to address coastal flooding and storm damage across more than 57 square miles in the District of Columbia and surrounding areas of suburban Maryland and northern Virginia, at the Baltimore District Headquarters, July 18, 2017. Chamberlayne signed alongside the following Baltimore District team members, from left, Chris Nolta, chief, Civil Project Management Branch; Rolando Sanidad, project manager; Dave Robbins, manager, Coastal Programs; Dan Bierly, chief, Civil Project Development ; and Amy Guise, chief, Planning Division. "The Sea" (link below) is a hauntingly beautiful, but dark song by the late, very talented English musician and singer Sandy Denny.
Topically poignant lyrics include "..sea flows under your doors in London town.."
Yes, it's excessive rainfall right now (early 2014), of course, but the sea has been like a tiger out of its cage, too. Most reliable source describes a rise of about 12cm in the last 100 years along the English Channel.
The song was written about 40 years ago when a returning ice age was talked of, rather than rising sea levels. Have owned the album ("Fotheringay") containing this song for all that time and never conceived that the threat from the sea was so great and so soon, until recent weeks.
The Bethel Beach site in Mathews County, Va., consists of 21 acres, including three acres of marshland. Pine and cedar are the dominant tree type in the upland sections of the property. Although both the high and marsh appear to be healthy, invasive phragmites is slowly taking over the higher section of the marsh. The forested area and marsh support a variety of wildlife, including woodcock and other shorebirds. The old fence posts with barbed wire and levees present suggest that the land was previously used as a farm field, and a barn structure still stands toward the interior of the property.
Nearby, the Bethel Beach Natural Area Preserve consists of more than 100 acres off the Chesapeake Bay. The area supports nearly 175 species of birds, especially during spring and fall migration. The preserve’s sandy shoreline, low dunes, and salt marsh areas supports a variety of wildlife, including the federally threatened northeastern beach tiger beetle. These two side-by-side lots are located at 69 Old Mill Landing off Bethel Beach Road in the unincorporated community of Onemo in Mathews County, Va. Totaling just over 5 acres, the property provides waterfront access to the southernmost part of Winter Harbor known as Winter Harbor Haven. The upland portion of the property contains a mixed pine or hardwood forest. At the edge of the property, there is a raised septic field behind a trailer. The property supports local deer, and buttresses at the base of trees suggest that the bottomland remains wet for signification portions of the year. The high land low marsh on the property appears to be healthy with minimal erosion. Oct. 8, 2021 (Photo by Aileen Devlin | Virginia Sea Grant)

In downtown Majuro, yards are threatened by high tides (this one in Feb 2011 was not accompanied by wind or strong waves). Note the hundreds of trash items escaping a backyard landfill, unnoticed by local authorities. In Jenrock neighborhood a cemetery has been swallowed by the sea.
