Parmigianino -

portrait of Lorenzo Cybo with his page [1523]

Copenhagen National Gallery of Denmark

********************************************************************************

The work: oil on panel, 126×194.5 cm, depicting Prince Lorenzo Cybo, an illustrious figure in Umbria.

Under the signature of the artist from Parma, we read: LAURENTIUS CYBO MARCHIO MASSA/

ATQUE COMES FERENTILLI - ANNO MDXXIII.

The prince was born in Sampierdarena on 20 July 1500 and died in Pisa in 1549. On 14 May 1520, he married Ricciarda Malaspina, Marquise of Massa and Lady of Carrara, in the cathedral of Massa. Lorenzo was appointed Count of Ferentillo, Governor and Castellano of Spoleto, perpetual governor of Vetralla, General of the Papal Guards in 1520, of Montegiove and Giano in 1529, Governor of Viterbo in 1532, of Pisa in 1534, etc.

Father of Alberico I Cybo Malaspina, Marquis of Massa, Lord of Carrara, Count of Ferentillo and perpetual governor of the land of Monteleone di Spoleto. The portrait of Cybo with his page was painted during the artist's stay in Rome, at the same time as the other painting depicting Galeazzo da San Vitale (now in the museum in Naples).

The majesty of Lorenzo Cybo, leaning on his sword, the presence of the page and the large format may have been influenced by the grandiose Roman portraits of Sebastiano del Piombo, but it still exudes the atmosphere of Parma, as evidenced by the red hat with a feather, typical of northern Italy, which is also featured in the portrait of Galeazzo. Unlike other portraits by the artist, here Cybo appears standing upright, with a nervous and proud gaze, but very distant. The page, who resembles the cherubs of Fontanellato, with his heavy clothing, could be misunderstood or considered a comic character.

Overall, the painting demonstrates all the creativity, ingenuity and inspiration that sprang from his stay in Rome, where he came into contact with other artists, styles, forms and temperaments.

Turning to Vasari, the illustrious biographer of illustrious artists, although he was not very kind to Parmigianino for this painting, he states: 'HEARING OF HIS FAME, LORD LORENZO CYBO, CAPTAIN OF THE POPE'S GUARD AND A VERY HANDSOME MAN, HAD HIS PORTRAIT PAINTED BY FRANCESCO; WHICH ONE COULD SAY WAS NOT A PORTRAIT, BUT RATHER A LIVING, BREATHING PORTRAIT'.
