361/366 - 2008

In 2004, the remnants of Hurricanes Frances and Ivan came through the North Carolina mountains back to back within days of each other.

Less than a mile from where I stand here.. at the banks of the North Fork of the Swannanoa River... lies the dam of the Burnett Reservoir. During Hurricane Frances, 23 inches of rain fell on the high mountains that surround this reservoir.. the main source of drinking water for Asheville.

The flood gates had to be opened, and this gentle stream began to rage.

Fuchsia flowers. The light was not good on Sunday...rainy and dreary, but I like how this shot came out anyway =).

"The flowers of these plants come in many different forms, but they are commonly known to resemble a ballerina. The stamens and style of the individual flowers look like the ballerina's legs, whereas the petals and sepals resembling the ballerina's tutu."

This one is for my son-in-law, Luke, who is running the Chicago marathon today. Saw it was 29 degrees F. in Chicago this morning, so hope the warm fall colors will cheer him on.

Update on the marathon-Luke's goal for his first marathon was to finish in under 4 hours. He did this, despite having cramps to deal with from mile 17 on. Congrats, Luke!

I believe this the same man I've encountered several times before at the annual West Indian Carnival Parade; he's always dressed as a Native American. This time, however, his face paint is so thick, and of such German Expressionist hues that his face is almost unrecognizable!

The young man next to him has a much more modest version of the paint, one that doesn't "mask" his identity.

It was rainy and windy when I took this shot, so I'm happy with the result :)

I was trying to do something different, but not sure what. It's a cloudy day here and so I wasn't in the sunglasses mood anyway. This will have to do.
