On the open plains of Nebraska...

August was a GEM month for severe storm structure. Folks... I didn't miss a beat.

Pure Eye Candy this one is. Open air supercells developing right as the dry line passed over us in South Central Nebraska.

I wasn't going to get underneath this one though it was close. I could have chased it, but I wanted to get the structure that day. Oh I got what I came for!

I had planned accordingly. Knowing that the storm was going to pass as it rapidly developed to the due east. I waited for bit under the hail core before I got into position to capture this storm.

Building Billowing Beautiful updrafts on the back side of this storm were memorizing. Perfect Supercell structure.

Editors Note...

Once a year a pull out a few sets from years past to start of the new year. In 2024 this year I have went back & revamped one of my favorite severe storms photo shoots of 2018

Back then I over colorized & over saturated the images. Pixelated & not my best work... Images were what I wanted but not the final product. If you want to see those to compare to these remastered images... here is your Flickr Link to that set of images...

But these are Gems of Gems.. I've even added about 50+ images in this set that I wasn't able to work on back in 2018. I even made a video with the old images to kick off the 2023 season... You can watch this right here on Flickr... Click Here ** Please remember I used the old images in this video **

Lightning is my forte... It is why I chase storms. To have an photo opportunity come up like this & traveled only 6 blocks from my home to get these pics...Gotta Luv Nebraska!

About that evening...

An epic night of sunset light and storm light @ twilight. Its almost every storm chasers dreams... or at least, in my own opinion, to get along side of a storm like this, as its firing away some incredible CC & CG every few seconds. What more could you ask for...

I was that Lucky Guy that evening. Just mother nature and I. Close to home after a few long storm chasing jaunts is just fine by me. She was producing and I was capturing every incredible second of this storm.. No Forking Bolt went away that evening without me getting a snap of its presence..

*** Personal Note ***

This is the original set back in 2014. If there was any type of editing done, I used the free Avery photo editor here Flickr. My Opinion... it wasn't the best but I had no prior knowledge of editing them back then. Plus I only shot in .jpg format not in .raw and I didn't do the best by over coloring and over saturation. There are some in this set this way. I was very under experienced in photo editing back then.

Always good storm chasing stories to tell about my weather adventures in 2014.

Days right after my knee replacement... Home from the hospital & I definitely wasn't supposed to be out and about. Knee was almost in a cast and I wasn't supposed to be doing anything to aggravate the situation. Though my quest for severe weather never ends and I wasn't going to miss another possible chase especially when its in my backyard. This storm was going to be a photogenic monster... Decision was made & off I went.

I wasn't out for long as the storm has now passed over to the north of the city. Wasn't the wisest of ideas to go out. I headed back home & as I pulled into the drive, the backside edge of the updraft had this incredible mammatus display. It was just a bit north of the city & I had a phenomenal view of this storm as it passed almost directly overhead. Sunlight that was cresting against this was simply incredible. So much detail in these mammatus clouds I couldn't quit taking snaps.

Another epic set of thunderstorm captures from South Central Nebraska. Though I paid for it with my knee just being replaced. I was super sore and the swelling was unreal a few days after this event. All worth it when it comes to what epic views I caught storm chasing on that particular day!

Under the base of this storm, we already has meso detection. TVS markers were on radar and it was moving directly to Ogallala Nebraska.

We got there on time and stopped right off of the interstate at a gas station with the best view.

This highly photographic supercell was maturing. But at this moment... This storm decided to weaken just a bit as we waited for this cell to produced a nader. Lost the TVS marker so we didn't stay long and packed the gear and headed south towards Grant Nebraska.

This would be the Tornado Day... and as little as we have had for storms I wasn't going to risk the chance of not being out that afternoon and evening. Of course I wouldn't be feeling the best, but of course I'm a trooper and if there are storms I'm there... sick or not sick.

Gussied up the dredge and grabbed my chase partner for that day and we headed south. Not to know what to expect as we had a high risk for tornadoes that afternoon. This was the first severe cell of the day. It would not be the last...

Finally a good setup for severe weather and were were on time for the event. Shortly after 4pm CDT were in the Moderate Risk area for that afternoon. Arapahoe Nebraska was our destination. Traveled a few miles south to get the best open position before the storms. Pointing the cameras due southwest, this is were they were to develop and become severe.

Towers were already forming and were were under the first cells of the day. These would become the tornadic cells just north of Alma Nebraska that late afternoon.

Always watching this process of the storm is interesting. How the clouds form before the storm into the storm... Plus they are always photographic eye candy!

Severe Warnings popped up for this lone cell by Oconto Nebraska with a nice TVS marker just south of the city. It was my calling to get my gear together and make a small jaunt north on Hwy 2 from Kearney Nebraska. This storm was to be in the Miller Nebraska (northwest of Kearney) area within the hour and I wasn't going to miss this show when its this close to home.

No other chasers on this storm and it was just this lone thunderstorm and me! Beautiful LP structure with clearly visible rotation on this storms' time lapse. Couldn't have asked for a better landscape setup with the pure flatness of northern part of South Central Nebraska.

Storm died out as this storm cell scooted almost directly due east it still had some luster left in her and she was showing off. Beautiful billowing thunderheads to end this chase day!

The 2016 storm season is upon us here in the plains of South Central Nebraska. Thought I better get the cobwebs out of the lens and take a few different perspectives.

Nice set of thunderheads off to our southeast. Nice Towers forming over northern Kansas and moving into southeast Nebraska. No chasing this day. Had to work, but this was good for an after work viewing of the storms.

A long jaunt... 1200+ mile trip to see some clouds. But every second was worth it. Mother Nature wasn't going to be fickle on this day...

Had an invite to tag along with Trent Bosler and & Freddy McKinney down to chase the huge risk day down on the south west edge of Oklahoma. It paid off in dividends. 2 great people that I haven't had a chance to chase with before. Trent Bosler (with SVLMedia) & Freddy McKinney, and young and talented up and coming chaser. Both of these 2 gentlemen have refined skills on chasing storms. I went as an observer this day as I don't get this opportunity very much as I would like. To study how others do thing when it comes to storm chasing. Navigation, safety practices, and predictions. Believe me when I say I learned something about someone else's process, I did. Grateful that I got to come along and I respectfully learned from both of them. Things that I will take back and teach others that want to chase.

Late afternoon when we got to our destination. We stopped and got something to munch on @ Subway in Mangum. We had about an hour before the storm we were observing moved out the Childress Texas area and cross the border into southwest Oklahoma. We knew where we wanted to be and got to a location southwest of Mangum Oklahoma and patiently awaited out the outcome. We didn't have to wait long.

Initial reports indicate that the tornado had winds up to 212 miles per hour, making it an EF-4 or EF-5 tornado. A large debris cloud could be seen with this tornado as it moved through open fields. It caused some damage to homes and trees, but it missed the heart of the community & the chaser convergence...

I had the night off and we had 90% chance of severe weather developing after sunset. I was on a mission to capture some lightning. Though chasing these types of storms, watching them build and die sporadically this time of year in South Central Nebraska can be frustrating.

Simply we had find the right cells and get into intercept position in front of the storm. Not an easy task, but I wasn't going to be denied on this night's chase....

Waiting for the first cells to develop just to our west as warnings were just issued, we had this incredible sunset...

Mid August 2014.... A very hot & humid Sunday afternoon. With only a %30 chance of storms developing, we had a chance for a severe weather to develop. Central & South Central Nebraska were due for a good August Storm.

Conditions were just right for storms to brew. Right after 4pm CDT, northern Buffalo County (just north of my location) was getting hammered with 2'" diameter hail. This storm was on a direct course to skim just to the north of the city.

Had to back off from this approaching supercell. Moved back to the very outskirts of northern Kearney Nebraska. Got to the highest point possible & starting taking snaps. What a photogenic beast storm. Talk about Ominous... This approaching shelf cloud was truly a foreboding cloud structure as it creased ever so closer.

It has been an excellent start to the 2016 chase Season. Bonus was, that I had the day off and no commitments except for storm chasing. I was set for an Epic Day!

I ended up with well over 700 pic from this storm chasing event, but I've skimmed it down to about 100+. Truly this will become some of my best severe weather photography to date...

I was seriously late the game on this storm. But I was never out of the game. I had now positioned myself just to the North of Wray Colorado.

Strategically, you want to be to the south east, southwest for the best light... It's all about timing, and I thought it wouldn't produce till it was well west of my location. Giving me that perfect view of the backside rotation of the storm.

In my opinion, I found a perfect view, looking due south southeast. I ended up on the northwest side of the rotation. Dangerous yes...but this will eventually give me one excellent view of this tornado and all her glory.

It was our first photographic storm of 2020. Usually in April I've been out in years past chasing the storms several times by now. But due to the Covid19 Pandemic and Old Man Winter sticking around way to long. This so called 2020, beginning of our storm season has been non fruitful for us weather observers in South Central Nebraska, let alone the state. But this is all going to change over for us fast here and soon we will be in the midst of our severe weather season.

It was good to get out. As I for one have been staying home and doing my part in stay safe and healthy. Plan on staying that way. Though cabin fever overcame my need to stay home. Prepping correctly. We made a small and safe jaunt to North Platte Nebraska to get out first taste of some Nebraska Thunderstorms....

If you’ve got a spare hour or so, what better way than to pass the time than lounging around, watching the balletic performance of clouds, especially if you’ve got someone to keep you hydrated with drinks during the performance.

There’s quite a dramatic scene being played out here which culminated in an impressive thunderstorm just a few hours later.

The upper clouds are Cirrus uncinus which are composed of gently falling ice crystals at about 20 000’. They’re also known as Mares tails and were a useful wind warning to Mariners and would make ‘tall ships carry low sails’.

The lower cauliflower clouds are Cumulonimbus calvus which grow rapidly, up to around 6500’ and are powered by the plentiful solar energy above. It may progress to form a Cumulonimbus capillatus and can reach up to 60 000’ making it the tallest structure on Earth. In the classification of clouds they are denoted as CL9, which may well be the origin of the phrase ‘on cloud 9’.

Pilots will often give these Cumulonimbus clouds a wide berth due to the turbulence and high water content which can lead to large amounts of ice forming on the aircraft.

C capillatus are the classic thunder and lightning storm clouds and may contain as much energy as 10 atomic bombs!

youtu.be/r_9Kf0D5BTs

What’s even more amazing is that I’ve just seen an upside down rainbow, just this minute!!

Maybe that’s just too much nerdiness for one day, but if anyone is interested, let me know and I’ll post it.

Late evening on hot and humid August evening in Nebraska. Warnings popped up about an hour before this storm was even visible to the eye over the horizon at sunset.

Spectacular Colors emitting from this stacked supercell. Cloud to Cloud Lightning shooting off every few seconds made this a storm chasers dreamscape.

Gear in hand that evening I traveled north out of Odessa Nebraska. Now about 2 miles to the east of Amherst Nebraska. This storm was strengthening and moving almost due south, southeast, meaning it was coming right at my location.

It would be a Historic Event to capture! Now remastered to the original color with no enhancements. Enjoy!

It has been awhile since I have come back to this set of images.

Original Set of Images can be found here on Flickr

This set of images is and still has been the most stolen set of images I have on the web on several platforms. Literately millions of views with no link back to my work or my photostream. Probably why I haven't revisited this set til now.

Just to let you know, those images were WAY over processed, over saturated etc. Yes I'm guilty. But it was the way I did things back then. I don't anymore.

Every year I go back and edit a few sets of images that deserve to be re-edited or reprocess from raw. I'm also adding several images from this set I didn't share last time around.

Beautiful storm photography from my best of 2014 Collection!

It storm chasing go time this time of year. Another phenomenal day of storm chasing was upon us in South Central Nebraska.

We had another moderate risk day, as the sky was again talking to me. Best of all this was going to be a local chase day.

The storm cell I was chasing most of the day had weakened and the boundary for severe weather was to my west. I had to get north and east via Hwy 36. Ended up parked just south of Phillips Nebraska.

This new cell had warnings on it as I was approaching from the east. Now with good rotation detected on this side of the storm. Building, and getting wound up, this storm meant business.

I was in the perfect position to capture another severe weather photographic treat....

I wouldn't have to chase this evening to catch some incredible Nebraska views of this supercell that formed just to the north of Hastings Nebraska. The perfect sunlight cresting against this storm cell was perfect in every way. I knew I was in for a treat. Just a few blocks from home I set up shop!

We had a dying cell to our west creating a beautiful sunset and I would eventually get a few snaps of this. Though was pointing due east from my location on the outskirts of Kearney Nebraska. 6th Year in a row we have had a severe thunderstorm pop in south central Nebraska late evening on the 4th of July. Thousands of strikes and the cloud to cloud lightning was simply breathtaking.

This storm crested right south of the I-80 Nebraska corridor, which is just south of Kearney. It was stationary for about an hour and then it pushed a little east before it grew and slowly moved to the southeast into North Central Kansas.

Some of best lighting captures of 2019! Enjoy!

After some incredible thunderstorm structure south of Ansley Nebraska, I got pounded with quarter sized hail, horizontal rain and wind gust up to 50mph. There were times that I couldn't see 10 feet in front of the truck, but I pushed on.

Had some incredible lighting after pulling out the south end of this storm cell. But in the heat of the moment, I didn't have the camera in focus and about a 100 shots came out lame. I didn't know this at that time.... I was truly disappointed in myself, not checking settings. Its was one of those basic fundamentals.

I did get a chance to redeem myself as I pulled onto Hwy 40 east just outside of Miller Nebraska. The storm was still building as it was cresting northeast. Shooting off tons of cc lightning. I pulled off the side of the road to end of a day of some great storm chasing photography.

Almost a month since I've been out. Most chasers at this time of year say it way over for storm chasing... However I have a different mindset. For those that follow my photostream here on #Flickr, you know me all to well.

Late season supercell, moving almost from due north to south. Planned and intercepted this cell right at sunset just to the south of Ansley Nebraska. I had timed it out perfectly. This time of year we rarely get storms this strong. We have that 6 week window, where we have the same scenarios as we do in spring here. In this instance it was one of them.

A nice supercell with a wicked good Nebraska Sunset to boot. Who could have asked for a better light & storm setting than this. Almost the perfect lighting as the sun was setting. One of my favorite chases of the year. Not 1 other chaser on this storm. Just myself & the open plains of Nebraska. With a monster evening supercell to boot!

This cell was a slow mover... only about 10mph almost due south. Severe warned and producing some real eye candy. Back building, it was a sight to see live.

Though sunset was upon me and I was loosing light fast. Perfect timing for this set of captures!!!

South Central Nebraska, early May 2012. No chasing this day due to work late. Afternoon Storms were predicted that afternoon & evening. Slow movers they were to be.

Though all of our planning had us hoping for an epic chase day, but mother nature had other plans...

Traveled to western Nebraska to wait for the initiation of severe storms either in the Northeast section of Colorado or where the cape and moisture signatures were predicted for that afternoon and evening. We had our hopes up. The CAP would prevent any development of storms for us that day...

We had to move from eastern Colorado down to Northwest Kansas. Where....Finally thunderstorm initiation started just to the south of St. Francis Kansas. Not many pics from this set but it was good pickens for a bust chase day!

We had some small cells staring to develop a outflow boundary pattern (Shelf Cloud). Good structure to this but again it was all outflow. Nothing severe but she did put on a good show!

As the first supercell had now moved north towards the North Platte Area. I was in the path of the 2nd storm gaining intensity and severity.

This was a larger complex of developing storm cells and I thought it was going become outflow dominate due to the large bow on radar from the outflow.

Though I would be wrong and this would stay organized and one could say I was in for a treat. Patiently awaiting I had the perfect spot again for this end of the year footage.

I was directly in the notch of this storm. Multi lightning bolts, cloud to cloud and cloud to ground were illuminating the ski every few seconds. Clearly defined cloud structure as one can see the developing wall cloud as it approached my location.

Yes this was very dangerous but this is what I do. Most never will or ever get to see a storm like this. Not this up close and personal as I did this evening. A wicked good way to end my Storm Chasing Weather Adventures in 2019!

It was another exciting local chase day in South Central Nebraska. A real treat! I didn't have to travel far from home to catch the severe weather that afternoon.

By mid afternoon, mother nature was on the prowl. Dry line had formed just about 30 miles to my west and storms were firing. Towers building and we had sufficient shear that day. We had all the right ingredients for severe weather to do her thing.

I was hoping for a photographic day, and this was the 2nd photogenic severe storm cell of that day. I wasn't expecting this opportunity. Even though NWS had downgraded this cell, it was still a sight to look at.

Arcus.....I wasn't disappointed.

It was approaching 12 hours chasing locally that day. Now over 800 captures from that afternoon. I have to admit I was tired...

It didn't make a difference... if it was photographic I was bound to stay out long enough to get a few good shots of the newly developing storms to our southwest. They were firing off a ton of cloud to cloud lighting.

I was only a few blocks from home, so I deiced to stick around to end this storm chasing day in a great way.

It's not called the lazy days of summer for nothing... Hot, Humid, and Dry... That's August in Nebraska. Without any front to push. Late summer storms cells develop, linger and are mostly slow movers. Just like these cells on that day.

I was watching the warnings go up for cells about 2 hours north of my location. Was watching some of the other chasers via the web that were out and about on these cells that early afternoon. Lots of action, severe warnings....it was my calling! I had gear packed and headed just to the west of Broken Bow. It was where I first encountered this beast.

Little did I know that I would follow this all the way back into norther Buffalo County that evening... With some of my best storm captures from August 2017!

2012 was a dry summer and the storm season was few & far between. Last recorded rainfall for us was back in early June. Working constantly I had that Sunday evening off and was able to get out to get a few snaps of this oncoming storm.

Finally received some much needed moisture. Strong thunderstorms had formed out in western Nebraska & were dying as they were entering southwest Buffalo county here in South Central Nebraska.

No warnings on this storm but she was producing some exceptional views of the core. Incredible cloud to cloud and cloud to ground lightning strikes pummeled the earth . This storm cell was proceeding to the northeast from the southwest. It crested right on the northern outskirts of the city. Couldn't have asked for better light & storm. Many photographic gems in this set!

I was seriously late the game on this storm. But I was never out of the game. I had missed a few of the other tornados that afternoon in Northern Yuma County. Coming from south to north I had to position myself correctly. Chaser Convergence was also in full swing so there were not may open areas to choose from.

For best pics of a Tornado and to be safe about it a storm such as this was moving North by Northeast... strategically, you want to be to the south east, southwest for the best light... Behind the RFD (Rear Flank Downdraft) It's all about timing, and I honestly didn't think it would produce a tornado til it was well west of my location. That was going to be the wrong guess... Though when I went due north of Wray I had a good viewing point but not in the safest location as you see.

I got lucky this day as...In my opinion, I found a perfect view, looking due south southeast. I ended up on the northwest side of the rotation. Dangerous yes...but this will eventually give me one excellent view of this tornado and all her glory.

Staying as safe as I could I wouldn't bail till it was about a mile away then I would head north again to a safer / better viewing position.

This storm was moving incredibly slow, building and brew'n just to the southeast of my location.

So much energy out of this developing storm cell to the southeast of Kearney that evening. Every few seconds there would be some kind of electrical discharge. I never had to wait for the next bolt. Just pointed my camera and shot away. Its slow development/movement to the northeast gave me this opportunity get these incredible shots.
