Floating Waterfalls in the Sky: What Storms Really Look Like

Our goal is to advance science with our new discovery of being able to showcase what showers and storms really look like!

Our goal is to change societies perspective and understanding of showers and thunderstorms through our aerial imagery! And we intent to continuously post on here as well other sites, as the more people see these images the more normal they become, exposure is key in normalizing this new view and perspective on showers and storms.

We are working on papers and presentations to submit to peer reviewed scientific journals as well! After a while, we hope our efforts help normalize that showers and storms are much more than just “blobs” on a radar screen, they are gigantic living and breathing entities that are just water and air!

Showers & Thunderstorms (convection) are much more than just blobs on a radar, they’re essentially heavy floating towers of condensed water vapor that have waterfalls, various wind fields, and electricity flowing inside them, that sometimes make it to the ground and sometimes not.

Aerial Storm Chasing

Showers and thunderstorms (Convection) are giant waterfalls in the sky when viewed from the air that come out of the base of their parent convective cloud. Usually the base they come out of is bounded by clouds and sometimes these bounding clouds take on an organized almost vault-like look or rugged look and can produce strong winds as the rain cooled air pushes outward and the convection takes in warmer air-creating a gustfront or shelf cloud. Everything you need to know about what is going on with a storm (convective) cell is located at and below its cloud base level. Going to mid levels of a storm and just above the base is good and fun for structure images but has no applications to helping people know what’s going on with the storm because all that is way lower in altitude below its cloud base level. Aerial chasing is something just a few people in the world diligently have pursued, it’s a unique hobby.

Floating Monsters in the Sky: What Severe Thunderstorms & “Shelf” Clouds Really Look Like

We are sure most people have heard the term shelf cloud, so exactly what is a shelf cloud?

A shelf cloud is a low, horizontal, wedge-shaped arcus cloud attached to the base of the parent cloud, which is usually a thunderstorm cumulonimbus, but could form on any type of convective clouds. Rising air motion can often be seen in the leading (outer) part of the shelf cloud, while the underside can often appear as turbulent and wind-torn. Cool, sinking air from a storm cloud's downdraft spreads out across the land surface, with the leading edge called a gust front.

What is a cloud, how does it form, and what dictates its color?

The air around us contains water in the form of an invisible gas called water vapor. As warm air rises, it expands and cools and temperature. Cooler air cannot hold as much water vapor as warm air, and as a result some of the water vapor condenses onto condensation nuclei (such as dust particles, etc) that are floating in the air and a tiny droplet is formed around each particulate of condensation nuclei. When billions of these microscopic droplets form and come together a visible cloud forms. A cloud is essentially just a large collection/accumulation of these tiny droplets of water vapor or ice crystals. These droplets are so small and light that they float in the air and do not fall to the surface. Clouds are white in color because their water droplets/ice crystals are large enough to scatter the light of the seven wavelengths of light which combine to produce white light. As long as the cloud and the air that it is comprised of is warmer than the air around it, it floats. The characteristics of clouds are influenced by the elements available at the time. These include the amount of water vapor, the temperature at arbitrary heights , the wind, and other air masses .

Floating Waterfalls in the Sky: What Storms Really Look Like

From the start, pilots are taught to stay away and avoid thunderstorms and anything associated with them. Much of this has to do with the danger of the unpredictable winds around them, there are ways to safely navigate close to storms in the air, and that is what we have done.

We are showcasing what thunderstorms actually look like in real life in this collection.

Everyone has heard of damaging winds and tornadoes and torrential rainfall, but what do these actually look like in real life? We have answers in this collection below!

Very few have actually seen these sights, we look at it like what knowledge could have been missed if we hadn’t have done that flight, every flight is invaluable to the science!

Side By Side Aerial Photo & 3D Thunderstorm Model Comparison Showing the Evolution & Life Cycle of a Single Cell Thunderstorm on June 28

***Note how the cell “rains itself out” as the core of the precip shoots down from the center to the base of the cell in the 3D model this correlates to when the rain begins to fall out of the base of the cloud to a complete downpour in the aerial photos

***Chemical Composition of Rainwater in Convective Raincores

-Main Chemical Makeup-> Sodium (Na), Potassium (K),Calcium (Ca), Magresium (Mg), Chloride (CI), Sulfate (SO4), Nitrate (NO2), Ammonia (NH4)

Our goal is to advance science with our discovery of being able to showcase what shelf clouds and severe storms really look like!

We are working on papers and presentations to submit to peer reviewed scientific journals as well! After a while, we hope our efforts help normalize that showers and storms are much more than just “blobs” on a radar screen, they are gigantic living and breathing entities that are just water and air!

Our goal is to advance science with our discovery of being able to showcase what shelf clouds and severe storms really look like!

Aerial Cloud Surfing

A Cloud and Its Shadow

A cloud is a living organism - A cloud is not a solid body floating in the air. In actuality, air enters the cloud at some location, such as cloud base, and exits the cloud somewhere, like at the top of the cloud or even around its sides. The cloud is like a living organism, taking in and eating water vapor and dry air and expelling liquid and/or frozen water and water vapor and dry air. Although the boundary between a cloud and the clear air adjacent to it may look unambiguous, there are invisible air currents just outside the visible cloud which are part of the cloud system. We must consider the effects of forces on the motion of individual air parcels as they move from the unsaturated area outside the cloud, into the cloud where they get nice and wet, then out from the cloud where they evaporate or sublimate, rather than forces acting on the entire cloud itself. A cloud can be changing its appearance and characteristics with time as air parcels move around into it and out from it. The analysis of clouds is much more complicated than that for solid objects.
