(Third of three) A front view of the female Masked Trogon, Trogon personatus, in the previous two photos that was perched in several spots along the trail between the Guango eco-lodge and the river while a light rain was falling.

Guango Lodge, Napo Province, Ecuador. October 10, 2015.

During our stay at Mashpi Lodge in Ecuador's cloud forest, this striking little bird caught my eye—a bright splash of blue against the green. I believe this is a Masked Flowerpiercer based on its colors and shape. It's known for its vivid blue plumage, black face, and slightly hooked bill, which it uses to pierce flowers and sip nectar.

These birds are often found in higher elevations and are known for their fast, active movements through the canopy. They also feed on fruit and insects, perching on juicy snacks like the one I photographed.

That said, I'm not a birding expert—this is my best guess based on field guides and online references. If anyone recognizes it differently, I'd love to hear from you!

Beautifully colored Sabrewing hummingbird converted to B and W to focus on wing blur. It only took a shutter speed 1/60th to get this blur, while the bird (fortunately) held still in it's vertical position.

The rufous-collared sparrow or Andean sparrow (Zonotrichia capensis) is an American sparrow found in a wide range of habitats, often near humans.

The Rufous-collared Sparrow is a common sight in the Central Valley of Costa Rica and the surrounding mountains, and it is also common in the regions of Colombia that we visited. It can be seen hopping in the grass, on the lookout for small worms and insects. They are not shy at all of people and will enter houses and buildings looking for food that may lie on the floor. The Juvenile lacks the Rufous collar around the neck and back. Common does not mean any less fascinating, and the “Comemaiz” is one of those common birds in Costa Rica that has more than one trick down its sleeve.

The turquoise jay (Cyanolyca turcosa) is a species of bird in the family Corvidae.

The turquoise jay is a vibrant blue jay with a black face mask and collar. It is found exclusively in South America throughout southern Colombia, Ecuador, and northern Peru. The turquoise jay prefers a humid habitat of montane evergreen forests and elfin forests with both primary and secondary growth. This bird is omnivorous and is known to eat insects, berries, eggs, and young birds of other species. Turquoise jays are nonmigratory and tend to travel in mixed flocks.

A warbler (Basileuterus tristriatus) flitting around deep in the Monteverde cloud forest.

The forest can get very dark, and flash is prohibited to reduce disturbance to wildlife, so I managed very few decent pictures of the huge diversity of birds in the reserve.
