Cloudberries (multe in Norwegian) are very common in Norway, especially in the north and south in the mountains, but they can be found almost everywhere in Norway.

Andøya is the northernmost island in the Vesterålen archipelago, situated about 300 kilometres (190 mi) inside the Arctic circle. Andøya is located in Andøy Municipality in Nordland county, Norway. The main population centres on the island include the villages of Andenes, Bleik, and Risøyhamn.

The island has an area of 489 square kilometres (189 sq mi), making it the tenth largest island in Norway. The island is connected to the neighboring island of Hinnøya via the Andøy Bridge. The Andfjorden lies to the east of the island, the Risøysundet strait lies to the south and east side of the island, and the Gavlfjorden lies to the southwest side. The Norwegian Sea lies to the west and north.

The numerous bog areas on Andøya are used for the extensive production of peat. Andøya is also well known for its cloudberries. Besides the flat and largely continuous bog areas, Andøya also consists of steep mountain ranges reaching up to 700 metres (2,300 ft) high. The sharp peak of Kvasstinden is the highest point on the island at 705 metres (2,313 ft). The Andøya Rocket Range which was founded in 1962 is also located on the island near the Andøya Air Station.

On the marshy lower slopes of Carn an Fhidhleir we came across quite a number of these bright cloudberries, growing among the grass and moss.

🌲 Solitude by the Lake: A Swedish Reverie

Imagine a soft July afternoon in the heart of Sweden’s lake district—Dalarna or perhaps Jämtland—where glassy waters stretch silently beneath skies streaked with wisps of cloud. There are no hums of traffic, no other picnickers, just you and a lake cradled in birch and pine.

🍃 The Setting

- The lake’s edge is speckled with mossy rocks and wildflowers—bluebells, buttercups, maybe a lone lupin nodding in the breeze.

- A blanket unfurled on the gentle slope down to the water, with a basket beside it, linen-lined and tucked with simple treasures.

- Loons calling in the distance and the occasional ripple from a curious fish breaking the surface.

The Picnic Spread

- Homemade knäckebröd with Västerbotten cheese and cloudberry jam.

- A thermos of elderflower cordial or lingonberry fizz.

- Smoked salmon or gravlax folded with dill sprigs.

- For dessert: a cardamom bun or chokladbollar rolled in coconut.

♂️ The Mood

It’s less about eating, more about being—the stillness, the scent of lake water and forest. It’s meditative, minimalist, perfect for a moment of reflection or creative stirring. Maybe you're jotting notes for a photo series, imagining the interplay of light and negative space. No social pressure, no spectacle. Just nature and nuance.

Photographic Opportunities

- A lone pine silhouetted against the lake’s shimmer.

- Your untouched spread against weathered linen.

- A dragonfly resting on a glass bottle.

- Bare feet on moss beside a reflection of sky.

Would you like me to suggest a specific lake with this sort of vibe—or sketch an image to bring it to life?

Hovden has many leisure activities in the winters, especially skiing and ice fishing. There is a major ski resort in Hovden which also includes a water park and spa. In the summers, tourists come to see the nice scenery, high mountains, fishing lakes, and hiking paths. The Ørnefjell Golf Course is a 9-hole golf course in Hovden. The area has Scandinavia's southernmost occurrence of wild reindeer. In the autumn, the area is known for its abundance of bilberries, lingonberries, and cloudberries.

I made an attempt to make proper American pancakes last week, but failed miserably. The ones I made were thin as CD´s.

Last night, SHE made these.

With Maple suryp, Cloudberry jam and what have you.

Totally delicious.

Even if Latvia is quite small, roughly 65 000 km², there are many nature parks, old forests, lake areas, and areas that are called in English swamps, bogs, marshes - I don' t know which one is the most correct word in this case, - but we have lots of those areas where in autumns cranes stop on their way to the south, where one can pick up some cloudberries and cranberries in the right time and right places, and where we have some of our beautiful board walk routes.

They are different in different seasons, more beautiful they are in summer and in deep winter, but this time I went there just after Christmas. Cranes were long time gone (of course), frost still had not appeared, but I found some handfuls of partly frozen cranberries that tasted still quite deliciously.

This is one of the little bog lakes the path lead us by.

The Freija fritillary (Boloria freija or Clossiana freija) is a butterfly of the family Nymphalidae with a circumboreal distribution. It occurs in bogs and tundra. Its range includes Northern Europe to the north of 60° N, occasionally more southern locations, the Urals, Siberia, the Russian Far East, mountains of Northern Mongolia and Hokkaido, as well as North America, extending in the Rocky Mountains to 35° N.[1][2] Larvae feed on Rubus chamaemorus, Dryas sp., Vaccinium uliginosum, Arctostaphylos alpina, A. uva-ursi, Empetrum nigrum, Rhododendron aureum, Rh. lapponicum.[1][2] The species produces one generation every two years

The cloudberry is native to cool temperate regions, alpine and arctic tundra and boreal forest, producing amber-colored edible fruit similar to the raspberry or blackberry. In Europe, they grow in the Nordic countries, Baltic states and particularly in Poland. They occur across northern Russia east towards the Pacific Ocean as far south as Japan. In North America, cloudberries grow wild across Greenland, most of northern Canada, Alaska, northern Minnesota, New Hampshire, Maine and New York.

Hiking in Yli-Nampavast wilderness and breathtaking natural beauty. The area boasts picturesque hiking trails that meander through forests, alongside lakes, and amidst rolling hills. In this region, there are opportunities for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The landscape here is characterized by dense forests of pine and birch trees, interspersed with clearings and wetlands. As you explore the trails in Yli-Nampa, keep an eye out for native wildlife such as wolverines, reindeer, elk, and various bird species. The bears hibernate. If you're fortunate to visit during the darker months of the year, Yli-Nampa is ideally located for viewing the northern lights aurora borealis. After a day of hiking, you might be treated to a spectacular display of these dancing lights in the night sky. One of the most appealing aspects of hiking in Yli-Nampa is the sense of solitude and tranquility. The remote location and pristine wilderness provide a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. In addition to natural beauty, hiking in Lapland offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the local Sami culture. Learn about traditional practices, visit reindeer farms, and perhaps even sample local delicacies such as smoked fish or cloudberries.

Yli-Nampa is located in the north of Finland, specifically in the Lapland region. This region is located above the Arctic Circle and is known for its vast forests, lakes and un-spoilt nature. Yli-Nampa itself is an area in Lapland that is suitable for outdoor activities such as hiking, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing and experiencing northern nature and culture. During the month of January, daylight hours are very short due to the polar night. This phenomenon occurs in areas above the Arctic Circle, including Lapland. We set out early in the darkness on our way to Luosto. In Yli-Nampa, the moon shines beautifully over the forest while the sun has yet to rise, but the sky is beginning to lighten. The snow in Yli-Nampa lies like an untouched white carpet, and the trees are draped in a thick layer of powder snow. Every step breaks the serene silence of the snowy surroundings; the crunching sound of fresh snow under my hiking boots fills the air. The trees bend gently under the weight of the snow, and nature seems to be in a deep winter slumber. The path is lined with pine trees adorned with ice crystals. The expanse of the snowy landscape stretches to the horizon, and the cold air tingles on my skin. The moment with the moon, surrounded by the white beauty of nature, is magical. It's not just a hike but also an encounter with the beauty of winter in Lapland. Photo of BieJee hiking and watching the moon in Yli-Nampa.

Cloudberry season in Finland has started! These tasty forest snacks have a beautiful orange colour when ripe.

Kauhaneva-Pohjankangas National Park, Finland

The colourful autumnal tundra of Alaska presents a feast for the eye and for the taste buds.

The salmon-pink fruits of the cloudberry are a gourmet's delight, although the neighbouring red fruits of the low-bush cranberry (Vaccinium vitis-idaea) are rather sharp in flavour and best experienced as jam. The leaves of the cranberry are small, glossy and oval (as at the bottom centre of the picture). The fine, closely spaced, narrow leaves (on the right) of the crowberry are occasionally accompanied by an edible black berry.

The taller plant with narrow leaves is Labrador tea (Ledum palustre) -- to name but a few of the local tundra species. From a slide.
