High in Saturn's atmosphere there is a temperate zone where the pressure is not too high and humans could live comfortably without spacesuits breathing a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen. Any aircraft that can fly on earth would be able to fly on Saturn by using the hydrogen in the atmosphere as fuel and carrying oxygen in its fuel tanks instead of fuel. The waste product of burning hydrogen is water so the base would recycle its own waste.

Reiter Affiliated Companies (RAC) Knowledge Innovation and Grower Support specialist Jamie Lopez, at Reiter Berry Farms in Watsonville, CA, on Thursday, August 27, 2015, shares why they are working with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to improve on the 30% water savings they already achieve with precision micro subsurface irrigation. The use of a Wireless Irrigation Monitoring Network (WIN) to collects data from wireless solar powered soil tensiometers, and weather field stations positioned throughout farms in three counties enable them to track soil, temperature, and humidity conditions with a cloud-based irrigation management system, to better manage watering and soil conservation efforts in more than 700 acres. They actively share their data, methods, and experiences with other producers. Better management by producers using a currently dwindling supply and quality of ground water (wells) in this county will help recharge the aquifer and prevent the migration of nearby Pacific Ocean salt water into the ground water they use. This is one of the ways growers are extending the water supply. Reiter Affiliated Companies (RAC) has been involved with family farming since 1868; is a leading fresh, multi-berry producer in the world; and a leading supplier of fresh strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and blackberries in North America.
Wireless soil tensiometer are buried at multiple specific distances and depths from the subsurface water emitters and the root balls. The tensiometer measures how strongly the soil absorbs water. The tensiometer’s porous probe is buried into the soil and a pump pulls some air out, creating a vacuum. Water and moisture from the surrounding soil enters the probe. Low amounts of water entering the tensiometer indicate plants (and evaporation) are pulling water from the soil and may need to be watered. High levels of water entering the tensiometer indicate the plants have enough water. This information is then transmitted to a company’s cloud-based irrigation management system that makes the data available on customer’s mobile device in the field. If this data is combined with historical data and other information, it can help determine when, how long and how fast watering needs to be for best efficiency, soil health and electrical economy to improve a business’s yield and profitability. These measurements helps ensure ideal watering and for soil conservation. The farms have been using the tensiometers for 5 years. USDA Photo by Lance Cheung.

From the TV series Captain Scarlet & the Mysterons. Bought at a car boot sale a few years back for about 20 pence - good value I reckon ! Resembling an aircraft carrier, complete with flight deck and powered by jet engines, Cloudbase hovers at a fixed altitude of 40,000 feet (7.6 mi; 12 km). Although normally geostationary, it can be moved to any point above the Earth's surface as and when required. It was constructed in Earth orbit and has a crew of 600. The whole structure is pressurised; pilots entering or exiting aircraft on the flight deck do so via airtight shafts and docking ports. Cloudbase's primary defence is its squadron of three Angel Interceptor fighter aircraft, flown by five female pilots (who have faster reflexes than men). One fighter is manned around the clock, with the others on continuous standby. Auxiliary aircraft include Spectrum Passenger Jets and Magnocopters, which are launched from a separate part of the flight deck.

Climbing out over Mystic, this was the view as I approached cloud-base, looking back down on Wandiligong, 1000m below. Kieran Schultz is not far below me on the red wing. The Wandi cricket ground, and hedge maze are below him.

Quite a rare visitor I believe, on the approaches to Newcastle Airport via the coast. Not the best weather to try and get photos but this is the best I could do with the cloudbase. Canon EOS R, Sigma 60-600mm Sport.
Mere Wiltshire 1975 BHGA Hang Glider Gliding Competition classic photo this is a wills wing swallowtail that had been used in the film sky riders, not sure who is flying bob or chris wills ?? but they gave all the black swallow tails hang gliders away to UK pilots before their return to USA. the black sails had started to stretch in the greek sunshine. but the gliders were far in advance of what the UK had, after this hiway produced the cloudbase and wasp produced the falcon range of hang gliders
note this is a wills wing swallowtail not the SST
Sticking my hand and camera out the window was a cold experience at cloudbase and freezing level. Peter joined me in the Janus C twoseater.

Sounds Air's sole-remaining Caravan I, ZK-PDM. I'd flown in on this from Wellington. The flight was meant to land at Picton, but as this airport is surrounded by high ground and the cloudbase was low, our pilot sensibly decided a landing at Woodbourne was a better option.

Now just when you think we're down into the foothills, we're climbing again and again, loopback after loopback, higher and higher to cloudbase.
Yes, that's our "highway" on the right.

Still unclear on the Welsh for no running, no bombing or no petting.
This was taken on a rainy walk up to the disused Cwmorthin slate quarry at Blaenau Ffestiniog. As Wikipedia notes, "although the town is in the centre of the Snowdonia National Park, the boundaries of the Park are specifically arranged to omit the town with its substantial slate waste heaps from the Park." You can see it clear as day in any map of the area.
The difference between the Snowdonia landscape and Blaenau Ffestiniog couldn't be starker. The hills are just vast piles of loose slate. Derelict railway lines go nowhere. It's a real shame. I'd love to go back some time and spend longer there to do it justice. From a photographer's perspective it's just a different kind of beauty.
Looks best on black.
Looking east from the wooded south side of Ennerdale Water, itself at ~115 m asl, up the forested valley above the lake. Ennerdale Forest largely clings to the valley floor; the bare upper slopes, their ridges extending ~10 km, strongly remind me of south-western Norway, particularly with the summits lost in cloud.
High Stile and High Crag, in cloud on the left (the highest part of the plantation on the left is directly below High Stile) rise to 806m and 744m respectively, before dropping back below the cloud at Scarth Gap, between Seat (561 m) and Hay Stacks (597 m). That puts the cloudbase at 600-650 m asl; higher than I thought.
Latterbarrow is at the left of the foreground, immediately beyond the head of the lake, with Ling Mell Plantations climbing Lingmell on the right. That ridge continues to rise off the edge of the image, but the top of that first steep slope is at 435 m asl.
Better On Black?
The Solo Turk ground crew salute their pilot as he taxies out for his display - the first slot of the Sunday schedule. Sadly, the cloudbase was too low, so he soon returned :-(

It was late & close to midnight. I went out about an hour before the storm was supposed visit our area. Storm slowed way down but was producing some nice ambient lighting against the lower cloudbase.
So I decided to stick around & see what was going to happen.
I wasn't going to be disappointed.
