A proper wall cloud! In the hilly landscape of NW England, I'm rarely in a suitable location to see these (other than from inside).

Today I was at ~490 m asl on Knowles in the Howgill Fells, with a clear view down the Lune Valley towards Kirkby Lonsdale. Middleton Fell, just south of the Howgills, is on the left, with Firbank Fell 5 km away on the right. Sunlit in the background, ~35 km away, is the northern edge of the Bowland Fells, in Lancashire.

A wall cloud, a 'wedge' protruding down from the surrounding cloudbase, marks the trailing edge of a thunderstorm, following and drawn into the zone of heavy rain, itself seen at the right of the image. In other cases, this is where a tornado could form. They can also be a little deceptive: one might have thought the mature storm was heading away to the right, whereas it was actually still building – in this direction.

Out of chronological order I know but here are a few more offerings from yesterday on the WCML in the Southern Uplands. Trans Pennine Class 350, 350 402, approaching Abington on service 1M90 Glasgow Central to Manchester Airport. Hard to believe it is the 1st July and the cloudbase is so low and drizzle so constant!

when the cloudbase touches ground, you need an alternative plan.... mono's the way to go!!

(but I think I've been a bit heavy handed with the vignette.....)

Flying my hangglider at cloudbase, ~7,000' MSL.

Great light.

The community in the foreground is the 14th Century Skelgill Farm itself. The white farm at the foot of Rowling End is, similarly, Rowling End Farm, and guess the name of the crag above Ellas Crag guesthouse.

Beyond Rowling End, the ridge rises to Causey Pike, which neatly defines the cloudbase as at 637 m asl, then on to Crag Hill; at 839 m, well within the cloud.

To the left is the arc of Ard Crags, not obviously a ridge from this angle; the nearer end is Rigg Screes.

Self portrait while paragliding high over St.Hilaire in the French Alps.

The approach into Oksibil is fairly straight forward, provided you've managed to get below the clouds with a reasonable gap between the cloudbase and the ground. If the clouds are too low then it could make the go-around somewhat "interesting".

Now just when you think we're down into the foothills, we're climbing again and again, loopback after loopback, higher and higher to cloudbase.

Yes, that's our "highway" on the right.

Take a moment to study this image, as the attractive cloud texture isn't instantly apparent (viewing On Black might help).

I loved the rapidly changing light as rain-blurred slopes, well above the cloudbase, were rapidly hidden and revealed.

Hang Glider Wills Wing SST Malcolm Hawksworth was manufacturing the Wiils Wing Swallowtail, and the SST Super Swallow Tail from 14 coombe terrace brighton sussex the swallowtail was £375 and the SST was £465 , The sails were bought in from Wills Wing USA and the airframe was manufactured in England, later Tony Prentice joined Hawsworth skysports Ltd and the company moved to the north of england in December 1976 to a old dye factory in Upper Hulme, Leek, Staffordshire, england. The airframe was manufactured and Wills Wing still supplied the sails.

The gliders were expensive at that time you could buy a Hiway cloudbase or Wasp Falcon 3 for £300

June 22, 2014 - Kearney Nebraska US

It was late & close to midnight. I went out about an hour before the storm was supposed visit our area. Storm slowed way down but was producing some nice ambient lighting against the lower cloudbase.

So I decided to stick around & see what was going to happen.

I wasn't going to be disappointed.

View of Table Mountain above the cloud base

Pilot: Miguel de Jong. Location: Razorback, South Australia.

About midway along the leading edge of Miguel's hang glider is a small camera hanging down - see the note. This is the vid of his short flight taken with that camera moments after this photo: The day that could have been.

Yes, the sky may look like an awesome cross country day with a great smattering of cu's, but it wasn't sucking up any hang gliders or paragliders to cloudbase. Nothing but a flight to the landing paddock for all who stepped off Razorback range.

don liddard flying graham cheshire's hiway cloudbase hang glider at walton on the naze cliffs clacton essex the log book says I managed to get a 20 minute flight - nice handling glider, dont know why I bought a wasp falcon 3, !!!!

Setting off over the Ochils, around 12.4O BST after 50 mins scratching. Cloudbase not that high.

High in Saturn's atmosphere there is a temperate zone where the pressure is not too high and humans could live comfortably without spacesuits breathing a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen. Any aircraft that can fly on earth would be able to fly on Saturn by using the hydrogen in the atmosphere as fuel and carrying oxygen in its fuel tanks instead of fuel. The waste product of burning hydrogen is water so the base would recycle its own waste.

From the TV series Captain Scarlet & the Mysterons. Bought at a car boot sale a few years back for about 20 pence - good value I reckon ! Resembling an aircraft carrier, complete with flight deck and powered by jet engines, Cloudbase hovers at a fixed altitude of 40,000 feet (7.6 mi; 12 km). Although normally geostationary, it can be moved to any point above the Earth's surface as and when required. It was constructed in Earth orbit and has a crew of 600. The whole structure is pressurised; pilots entering or exiting aircraft on the flight deck do so via airtight shafts and docking ports. Cloudbase's primary defence is its squadron of three Angel Interceptor fighter aircraft, flown by five female pilots (who have faster reflexes than men). One fighter is manned around the clock, with the others on continuous standby. Auxiliary aircraft include Spectrum Passenger Jets and Magnocopters, which are launched from a separate part of the flight deck.

Climbing out over Mystic, this was the view as I approached cloud-base, looking back down on Wandiligong, 1000m below. Kieran Schultz is not far below me on the red wing. The Wandi cricket ground, and hedge maze are below him.

Quite a rare visitor I believe, on the approaches to Newcastle Airport via the coast. Not the best weather to try and get photos but this is the best I could do with the cloudbase. Canon EOS R, Sigma 60-600mm Sport.
