The rainbow effect was much stronger live - but you can see a bit. Another unusual cloud formation, this time captured in Portland on the way home from Lake Oswego after work. At first, I thought I was my location that was creating the rainbow, but as I kept driving it was apparent that it was all about sun angle with this seemingly flat, high cloud. I've seen some great clouds, sunsets, and sunrises since I moved to Portland - it's great having weather again after so many years in SoCal.
Some crazy cloud formations above the Derbyshire Peak District on 30th August 2014. If anyone knows what these kind are then feel free to pass on your knowledge here please. This was looking straight up over the 'mountains', well, rocky hills to be honest.
It's not an oil pump or a water pump. It doesn't drill anything so that leaves only one thing it could be. It's a cloud maker. It manufactures all the desert clouds here in the Coachella Valley and Palm Springs.
View while the sun sets
I was astonished to see this large. It looked like the clouds were part of a huge fireball.

Ahangama beach, Sri Lanka. For the two nights we were there crazy cloud formations would appear late in the afternoon bringing short lived storms that would sweep in. It made for poor sunsets but if you like clouds then you would have loved it!
You can also see the iconic stilt fishermen hanging onto their sticks.
UPDATE: I entered this into round 174 of the Telegraph's Big Picture comp. I didn't win but I did make it into the top 21 entries for the week!
Surfing through the clouds as we climb to our cruising altitude of 36,000 ft on a JetBlue Airbus A320 from Hartford to Orlando with the sunsetting.

Breaking clouds viewed from Round Bald, Roan Highlands.
When me and fellow photographer R. Keith Clontz first made our way up to Round Bald the mountain was soaked in fog and everything covered in rime ice, which was a very cool scene in itself. Shortly after sunrise the high winds started clearing the fog from atop the mountain, every now and then you would catch a break and be able to see through to the distant mountain ridges which is what I was trying to capture here.
This photo is for my best friend who pass away just over one year ago. When he passed away the pain was to much to bear.Even though we know he's in a better place. My children loved this man like he was there dad.
When we see this star in the night sky we say it's david looking down on us.I so hope this is true.

"Cloud Factory"
The Kalalau overlook can offer tremendous views or a vertigo inducing cloudy wonderland. On this day we had both. As the clouds lifted to reveal the valley I used my 10stop filter to render the scene with the movement of the clouds. The clouds...being formed in front of our eyes.
According to weather spotters, this cumulonimbus cloud produced golf ball size hail at Imnaha, Oregon - 30 miles from where this photo was snapped. Photo shot from Enterprise, Oregon.
