I'm watching wave clouds undulate across the sky as if they were swells on the surface of a windblown sea, seen from the fishs' eyes in the calm below.

Amtrak F40PH 317 was northbound on Union Pacific's Joliet Subdivision at Odell just as the sun went behind the clouds.

There's not much else to really say about it.

I'd like to take the opportunity to thank my followers for the kind comments, faves, support and feedback. You guys are awesome!

Les nuages, c'est comme les rêves. Tantôt gais, tantôt tristes. On croit les tenir, ils se décomposent sous la main. Le souvenir est souvent ce qu'il en reste de meilleur.

Sunset over Oslo for 44 seconds. If you look a little to the right in the picture, you can see Holmenkollen. If you look extra closely, you can see the light from the houses. Cold experience with a tripod and clouds that move along Valhallveien and dazzle F20

― Pablo Neruda

After I finished shooting an amazing sunrise the other morning, I was packing up when I looked up and saw -- for the first time, I think -- mammatus clouds! They are kind of sac-like blobs that hang down, often underneath storm clouds, though no storm looked imminent on this morning. The word mammatus is derived from the Latin "mamma," which means breast or udder. Ok, 'nuf said! The ones I saw were actually a little more distinct a few minutes before this shot was taken. And they're mixed in with other clouds here (stratocumulus?) too. It was cool enough seeing them in the sky but the stunning reflection of them in the pond made the experience even more memorable.

Happy Fenced Friday. My first ever visit to the Hawaiian island of Kauai recently certainly made me stop in my tracks to admire the landscape. This was one of those moments, despite walking into a swarm of small flies. While I love the clouds here, I nevertheless wish I could have captured this area's landscape on a clearer day too.

Unsettled weather is great for landscape photography. Rainfall cleans pollutants from the air, improving visibility, while fast-moving clouds allow the sun to cast beams of light over the landforms. In this photo, smoke from a bonfire has muted the background lighting, while leaving the foreground gleaming with unfiltered sunlight.

In just a couple of hours, I managed to show how varying lighting conditions can dramatically alter the appearance of a landscape. I run workshops on the South Downs to teach people how to achieve this. If you are interested in spending a four hour session with me, please visit my Tuition and Workshops page for further details.

This photo was taken on September 10th 2010. I've already posted a shot depicting this wonderful event observed from the summit of Mount Rocciamelone.
