The impressive sky only stopped the smaller planes. Lots of the bigger craft and those travelling in other directions still managed to escape the torrential downpours - I stayed safely on the ground!!

Coast to coast day two, we had ascended Loft Beck to escape from a very wet Ennerdale Valley and were rewarded with this view of Buttermere & Crummock Water. We were a precious few feet below the cloud base and mercifully the rain had ceased by this point.

I must admit I knew nothing about these guys before they came on. They were the last display on the Saturday, and I was running out of space on the memory cards (note to self, buy more). At one point I seriously considered ducking out early, and I'm glad I didnt. You knew from the get go that these guys wanted to give 110% for the display, waiting a couple of extra minutes for the cloud base to lift to give the best possible show.
I'd love for them to come down to Australia for the 2011 Avalon show, but I think I'll just have to find another excuse to come to Europe for the season instead :)

I don't find myself above the cloud base often, but on a trip to Newton canyon to scout a waterfall, I came across this view off the side of the road.... the marine layer is so beautiful as it rolls into the hillside.... kinda like lookin at the earth from outer space. If this doesn't make you feel like a god, well, get a hobby. Lucky for me there was a wonderful patch of royal Mohave lupine nearby :), they make a great foreground... this image will hardly stop a bus, but, it's a great memory of springtime.... it reminds me that radical change is always just around the corner.... life blooms with possibility and beauty. the designer of this earth sure has left us with many a foreground to pick from. How thoughtful and random is this universe. I'll tell ya more about my waterfall adventure later. Hard to believe a 30ft waterfall lies minutes away from the road, safely nestled in a quiet gorge... often only viewed upon by red ants and moss loving mosquito's. I'm comin, I'm comin. Hold your horses.

My mini-trip over so quickly, good to catch up with friends and family albeit briefly and thwarted by the weather, despite the promises. Even the sun failed to last to the sunset at Mudeford Quay tonight, disappearing behind a solid cloud base far too soon.

After a relatively good night's sleep at the Tingri Friendship Hotel, we woke to more low cloud and a greasy chapati breakfast.
Leaving the others to walk back up to EBC still hopeful of a Qomolangma sighting, Fran and I decided to cut our losses and to walk down towards Rongbuk Monastery.
Our stroll took us alongside the rocky glacier route of the Rongbuk River valley, dotted with yaks. At the sacred water well, we picked up Tashi, a local Tibetan man who chatted to us as we walked on towards the monastery. About 10 minutes in, he became very insistent we stop and look back.... thereby ensuring we did get a sighting of Mount Everest, peaking out of the lower cloud base. Tu-de-chay Tashi!
At Rongbuk Monastery we pottered around the monastery kora, still getting the occasional sighting of Mount Everest / Qomolangma, and then returned to the tent camp, helping a lady carry her three thermoses of water for the final stretch.
I'd been a bit woozy all morning, and spent most of the exciting off road return drive to the Friendship Highway sleeping in the front seat. Too tired to keep my eyes open to take in the amazing scenery, the river crossings, and towing another jeep out of a bog.
At (Old) Tingri we rejoined the tarmac, and checked in to the Snow Leopard Guesthouse where we had a late lunch and a lazy afternoon to wash, repack and stroll the length of town which stretches along the main highway.
As the light faded, the cloud lifted and we were treated to a very atmospheric view of snow capped Himalayan peaks, including (somewhere!) the elusive Mt Everest
After noodle soup for supper, we made the most of the evening's hot water and hit our beds for a comfier night's sleep.
