Doctor Who Convention.

I attended a photographers meet up yesterday, a fantastic day where around 20 of us met up. The leader of it was the beautiful Kiara Rose.

The guts of an old 10-jewel wristwatch, just about the size of a nickel.

I have always loved clockwork -- one of my favorite possessions is my grandmother's antique 17-jewel pocketwatch -- and had to buy one of the old clockwork pieces I saw in the flea market bin. It's missing several of its movements, but it just looks so neat...

(Edit: Since a couple of friends asked for it, I've done a version as a desktop wallpaper.)

The late 70's rolling stock on the Glasgow Subway is shortly to be replaced. This scene is instantly familiar to a Londoner, though the Glasgow cars are smaller (being only 4ft gauge).

Cornelia had certainly met more talkative men than Bertram Cardinal.

When the clockwork lady arrived in London, the other War Office employees reacted to her appearance with open shock. They didn't even bother to whisper behind her back -- they spoke about her as if she wasn't there, as if she didn't know well enough to be offended. The government men thought they were clever, with their jokes about toys and dolls and "wind her up and watch her go," but she'd heard it all before.

Still, given the way his subordinates acted, Cornelia expected that the Unit Commander would be all bluster and outrage.

But when she knocked on his door, Commander Cardinal glanced up from his paperwork and regarded her with a look that Cornelia couldn't seem to find in her emotional evaluation database, try as she might. Already weary from her journey through the office, now somewhat disconcerted, the construct awaited his verdict.

Bertram set the folder he was holding down on his desk. "Higher-ups said they were sending me some kind of codebreaking machine. Called it a computer."

"I am the computer," Cornelia responded, chin held high. "My contact back in Babbage said you have an uncrackable transmission. Something from Germany."

"All right, then." It took him a long time to speak the words, but speak them he did. Bertram's eyes were calm, if not kind, and Cornelia barely dared to hope. "Let's get a copy for you."

For all the years she went on to work for the War Office, Bertram continued in his silence. But his body spoke for him. Cornelia saw the bruises on his knuckles the day after St. John Tyler called her a "literal dollymop." She witnessed the cutting glares he issued during meetings when she was spoken over. And one night, when they were alone in the office, she learned what it was like to be crushed against a man's chest. Bertram's body was firm, and yet so delicate. Breakable, unlike her own.

"Can you feel it?" Bertram wondered, all out of breath. "Can you feel it when I kiss you?"

"I feel heat and pressure." She smiled. "I feel a lot of things."

Even when he asked her to marry him, it was the ring he offered. And his eyes were calm, and kind, and shy.

A few years ago, back when I came up with the idea for the Insurgence series I designed a potential adversary for Arthur and the rest of The Nautilus crew. In the final battle, whilst exploring the headquarters of The Father (the ruler of Britain) they would come across several rooms adorned with statues of Britannia (the female personification of Britain). The statues would then ambush Arthur and the others, revealing themselves to be deadly clockwork robots. My initial designs back in the day were very simplistic. So now I have redesigned them.
