Choosing Different
Learning new,
Choosing different—
Sometimes a different
path
Sometimes a different
style
Sometimes a new
way
Stretches your vision
Moves you to try
Expects you to not give up
And not give in
But keep going and
Sometimes this
fails
Sometimes this
works
Sometimes this
surprises
Choosing different—
Learning new.

As the sun slowly recedes beneath the horizon, darkness creeps into the city. The streets begin to sigh and relax. Just around the corner, sounds of laughter erupt as city dwellers celebrate their successes of a day’s work well done! Yet above this frivolous play, babies demand to be heard, wanting their every needs to be met. A hungry alley cat sneaks into a trash bin, ready to challenge any vagabond for a nightly dinner. Occasionally, a fight erupts between cat and man over a remnant of meat or morsel of bread fallen from the hands of a busy eater on the run. "Shoo, get away!" comes the sound from an alley backdoor.
As the hot day mixes with the chill of the evening, a steamy fog rises above the city. Under the lampposts, the daytime workers shuffle anxiously awaiting their trolley to make a quick getaway to the suburbs. Benches gather a shimmer of dew, and a cloud begins to spew like a geyser from the city sewers. A misty rain, blended with motor fumes and warmed by the leftover heat of the day, leaves an odd but all too familiar smell in the city by night. No fear, these smells will wash away, as the night crew slowly swishes across the city in the wee hours of the night with hungry cleaning machines. Tomorrow’s streets will sparkle and smell squeaky clean! The process will begin anew.
As the city begins to hush, fireflies buzz and join the rhythm of the twinkling stars above. A red eye quietly steals across the sky, owning the airways! This nightglow in the city radiates beyond the earth’s atmosphere, signalling galaxies beyond.
Though the city sleeps, shadows lurk the streets and alleys in the darkness. Beware, the night holds the secrets of the city.
This is a "make and remake" idea as a continuation of the #clmooc writing summer project which I participated in during the summer of 2013. Feel free to remake this. Perhaps the day holds the secrets of the city? (The picture was taken today in the city as we anxiously awaited the Iowa State Fair to come down Grand Ave.)
The dog, the cow, and the moon make three
A magical tale of long ago, about a team they be!
Look up; study the stars
Circling our world, they swirl!
Hand-in-hand and fully-charged,
Offering light, hope, and good dreams
For every boy and girl!
--My make for Week Two of the #clmooc
Quote from project blog: Make With Me!
"For this second Make Cycle, one option is to grab an old toy─maybe something that you played with as a kid, or something from the bottom of your kid’s toy box, or perhaps a something that you rescued from abandon in a thrift shop or a yard sale. Study it, consider what it is, think about what it can be. Gather the things necessary to hack it, remix it, or remediate it─your analogue and/or digital tools. Take it apart, put it back together in a different configuration. Add something. Take something away. Make it sparkle. Make it move. Make it light up. Create a digital story, a fan-fiction mash-up, or film a stop-motion animation."
My make involves a picture, a graphic, layering tools in a photo editing program, and a big imagination on fracturing a nursery rhyme! Enjoy! I enjoyed layering the moon!
Shadow of the Bud
It was the first one
the first bud in a furry pussy willow
We watched it grow
We imagined its open wonder
We envisioned the magnolia
opened as a full gown of white satin
Every day we stopped to look;
We marveled at each push out into the sunshine
Slowly, day by day, it pushed
away its fuzzy blanket
It dared to grow ahead of all the others,
pushing out just above the sidewalk
In our daily walk we watched it bob
in the cold breeze when winter wandered back;
Still, it pushed out ahead,
eager, I suppose, to be first in spring’s warmth.
And then, it did: it spread its satin
fingers wide open in a welcome to the sun—
Its rounded petals smiled up
Glad to show its open beauty—
Glad to show its success to share
Glad though winter left its mark
a stain on its satin now tinged in brown—
Still, it proudly sang to the sun.

Today’s Prompt: Fruit
I chose blueberries on the bush! I used a quick fill and then began a painterly style of blending colors to create depth, shadows, highlights.

When Your Cat is Queen
When you get up
to refill your water glass
and return to your art work,
the cat is in your seat—
the wild cat
whose eyes say
“It’s my spot now”—
with one paw out,
ready
to
swat.

Excerpt:
Rose handed the freshly picked lavender to Willow and slid her feet out of her walking boots. She wore another of her favorite lavender colored dresses, this one with a lighter lavender spiral design in the skirt but plain on the top, with her knotted brooch always pinned above her heart. Her sash, of garden green, layered unevenly with highlights that danced in the flickering light of the fireplace. Today, her hair was tied up in messy bun, a few stray grays floating out here and there, though she’d tried to hold them in with dragon stone barrettes. Her sapphire earrings twinkled like stars as did the topaz of the sun spiral, slightly askew on its red leather ribbon around her slim neck.

Excerpt:
“Yes,” she remembered her first glimpse at Arthur. “I found him in our gathering at our Salon; he seemed to be counting the wall tiles and notating them on his d-pad. I had thought he was younger as I looked at him from the back— his loose and longer hair cut typical of younger boys, but he was also wearing a green tunic over darker green slacks, similar to what my father sometimes wore when officiating at counsel business. When he’d turned around - now I wonder—did he sense me looking? He certainly turned directly towards me. He waved and tucked the loose locks behind his ears, the left one pierced with a single blue sapphire. His blue eyes, large and inviting, pierced my thoughts, and I’d looked away, embarrassed at mistaking the young man’s age and hesitant to connect with the handsome and unknown young man who seemed to be on a special mission, an envoy from another city, perhaps?”
She paused to consider that first meeting and added, “The tweed of Arthur’s tunic, with side and front pockets, carried an aura within it, a shimmer of something more than cloth. It reminded me of when my father rushed out late at night for a hurried counsel meeting at the time of the earth shake. I’d sensed danger, but he just pointed to his tunic and said, ‘I’ve the protection of the Innes wee folk within here— look. Do you see it?’ And when I examined father’s sleeve, I sensed an ebb and flow along the threads, a lighter green stream barely seen of something not of the cloth, but of the weaver. And father agreed, acknowledging my thoughts, explaining ‘A gift from my grandmother from her grandfather woven during times long ago.’ I remember hugging father then, fingering the weave and understanding that within was something connected only to him, but reassuring me.”
She looked up at Grandma Rose, “Arthur’s tweed has the same otherness, a weave of thread and wee.”

Yesterday Disappointment
Five petaled pink
Caught my eye today
“Oh look, I think
A gift in the driveway!
Let’s move it to a place, here
In the garden —let it seed!”
“No” said he in a sneer
“Not that obnoxious weed!”

Today Rejoice!
Five petaled pink
A friend would name today
“Oh look, I think
Stork’s bill in your driveway!
Wildflower: critter food, here
It will spread — its spiral seed!”
“Yes” smiled I with a cheer
“I’m so glad it’s not a weed!”

Today I was delighted to receive in the mail my soft phone cases for my Mothers Day present, a new iPhone. These cases are from my Red Bubble shop with MY ART designs as the print! They look fabulous, and I am tickled to carry my phone now adorned with art created by me.
It's so fun to think and plan a design, then actually create the design and upload it to a print-on-demand [POD] site for others to purchase-- and me!
To see these designs on my shop, go to my Art Blog's home page:
to find a link to these three designs in particular. Let me know what you think.
