What is craft in the 21st century?

This stool is a celebration of the possibilities emerging from mixing craft with technology. An imperfect hand-drawn pattern becomes the base of this stool after being laser cut. It is as well a final extravaganza in acrylic. What is going to happen when there is no more plastic or we are banned from using it? Plastic pieces will rise in value. Therefore, the Bloom Stool is a last celebration of this material, and a potential investment.

A mobile phone concept for Vertu, in 2015.

The Vertu Edge has been designed keeping in mind the technology pattern, which Vertu is pursuing, i.e. in 2002; Vertu was launched, when the camera phones were becoming popular. Whereas in 2008, Vertu has a camera phone and now touch-screen/internet phones are becoming fashionable.

The Edge is a small 70 mm phone, with a small screen in front that allows you to navigate the phone, call, text, and receive incoming calls with the help of functional touch sensitive ceramic pillow. When required, the foldable edge-to-edge touch screen at the back folds-up and converts the phone into a bar phone. With a bigger screen, built-in GPS, and 16GB of internal memory, you can fit more into your mobile life. The Edge with high-speed mobile broadband and integrated mobile office keeps you effective while on the move.

Vertu Edge is the perfect balance between premium design, precious natural materials and human technology. The Edge is both, a stylish personal communications device and an exquisite lifestyle statement.

Design a piece of furniture that Arthur Liberty would be thrilled to have commissioned were he alive today.

Arthur Liberty was born the son of a draper. He began selling exotic fabrics and object d'arts. His store grew to be associated with luxury, quality and fashion values that continue to hold true in today's Liberty.

Drawing connections between haute couture and Liberty's reputation as a fabric specialist and provider of bespoke services, this project sought to transform high fashion into furniture.

Taking inspiration from pattern cuttings of the late 1800s as well as the resurgence of tulle on today's runways, this piece sought to capture the enduring notion of luxury whereupon layers and layers of precious fabric is assembled and hand-finished.

The structure drew upon the construction of crinolines and bustles to understand how fabric works with a stiff frame. The seating is removable for dry-cleaning purposes and achieved through an invisible zip at the base of the seat.

The result is a decadent assemblage of silk tulle and mirror-finished stainless steel that appears to float in mid-air.

Special occasion evening phone for the woman of tomorrow.

As time moves on, we are seeing an increasing number of woman entering the work place, which means having to manage their working life, social life, and home life. Vertu Twilight is a mobile phone device that enables the user to stay connected to her most important people while she attends special corporate functions or whiles out socialising on special occasions without having to comprise on style or handbag space.

Vertu Twilight is just as much a mobile phone as it is a piece of exquisite jewellery. The form of Vertu Twilight was based on the common female gesture of sweeping hair behind the ear, and to highlight the elegance of the product and the user, very subtle gestures are used as the interface tools.

Alice Chess Set - Client Project

A Chess Set inspired by the novel 'Alice through the Looking Glass' where the pieces magically turn from opaque to transparent when they touch the board.

In ‘Alice through the Looking Glass’ by Lewis Carroll, Alice falls through a mirror and on the other side of the mirror, she becomes a piece in a game of chess. Inspired by this, the chess pieces have an opaque mirror finish, when they touch the surface of the board they magically turn transparent and reveal the identity of the piece contained inside them. When removed from the board they revert to being opaque, hiding the identity of the piece.

This is a comment on how a chess piece has no value unless it is in play on the board. If removed from the board, a pawn and a queen are equal, in that neither have any value.

The theme of 'Alice through the Looking Glass' is the difference between the real world and the world behind the mirror. In keeping with this theme there is a contrast between the unlit mirrored piece and the clear glass piece. Each unlit mirrored piece is a smooth and modern shape. Each lit piece is clear glass, with the negative shape of a traditional, delicate Staunton chess piece enclosed within it. In the book the White Knight talks about how he thinks better when he is upside down. In a reference, the White Knights in the set only work when they are placed upside down. This joke is hidden to all but those who know the background of the chess set

The Chessboard is made out of LightPoints a material manufactured by Schott, which is glass that has LED's embedded in it; the pieces are coated with Mirona, a Material that turns transparent when light shines through it. When the piece is placed on the board it completes the circuit and lights up the LED under it turning it transparent, like magic.

This product was designed in response to a brief set by Schott UK Ltd. for Final year students of Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design.

A travel solution addressing the environmental impact of PET bottles

This project is a response to the environmental impact caused by disposable water bottles.

I observed main barrier preventing use of more sustainable reuse water bottles is convenience; having to carry a voluminous bottle throughout the day even when empty necessitates carrying a bag and inhibits use.

This product has been designed for commutes; the user can fill up the bottle at home or place of work, when empty the bottle fits into a suit or trouser pocket.

The appearance of the bottle gives the product a strong shelf presence and emphases its slimness and collapsibility.

A centrepiece vase that plays on traditional ceramics

Tasked by Liberty’s to ‘design a piece of furniture or an object that Arthur Liberty would be thrilled to commission were he alive today’ I have responded with a witty and contemporary take on the traditional, British ceramics industry. The vase is made up of 14 different plates and bowls, all piled up and arranged to look unstable. Each vessel represents a decade that Liberty has been trading and is designed with the ten years it showcases in mind. Starting at the base, the first plate represents the 1870’s and working up to the top where the final bowl represents the Noughties. The vase incorporates an inner glass vase into the design to enable both the water and the flowers to be changed conveniently and allows the main body of the vase to remain in a fixed place. The result is a statement piece that captures the imagination and forms the focal point of the room in which it is placed.

A futuristic approach helping business air-travellers make the most of their hands.

Most businessmen would agree that, one of the dreaded parts of a business-trip is having to drag numerous luggages around. Even after check-in, the laptop, briefcase, garment bag and cabin luggage remains and one must somehow manage to balance them between just two hands. To add to the frustration, a habit of ‘wasting’ one hand on holding onto boarding-pass and passport has developed simultaneously world-wide.

Travel I.Ds are hand-held until the owner has safely arrived to their designated seat onboard, this is due to the issue of reassurance. Seeing and feeling is believing, and both are needed to know the I.Ds are 100% secure.

ZoOm has been designed to accomplish all those requirements. Using the mechanism of the carbon-steel snap-band, travel I.Ds are securely snapped around the user’s wrist with zero effort. With governments worldwide trying to substitute passport with I.D. card, ZoOm is also designed to adapt to this revolution.

A chandelier which becomes almost invisible until the light is turned on..

After a couple of experimentations with different materials of SCHOTT, I came up with the idea of changing the appearance of the existing led embedded glass. I created a sandwich using the Mirona glass with Led’s rather than the clear glass. The result is a mirror looking glass with light caged inbetween the layers. The material looks even more advanced as you can not see the led’s when they are switched off. At the same time it doesn’t only creates the mystery “from where does the light comes from?” but it also displays one more interesting material of the company; the Mirona glass. The visual language of it, is very simple and geometric as it is inspired by the Universal archetypes of the contemporary lamp shade. The result is the “Mirror mirror on the upper wall” chandelier which becomes almost invisible due to the high reflective glass (the mirona glass). As a result, everyone creates his own story in order to understand from where the

light comes from…

This is a new design idea for a pram that offers babies more freedom and comfort.

Simplicity and safety are not the current trends for pram design as more and more parents realize what their babies want are comfort and freedom.

The old style of pram design restricted the movement for babies, such as tight seat-belts which made babies feel uncomfortable and the small space allowance minimized the movement of the baby, which was not good for the health of the baby or its care. The new design of the “Freedom Pramette” not only solved the problem of pram space by extension and enlargement, which offers the baby more space but also creates a comfortable touch and feel for the baby just as if they were inside the “mum’s womb”.

The flexible adjusting function allows the pram to extend both longer and wider. The baby can sleep, sit, stand inside; it can even fit 2 babies inside one pram. Imitation materials with the sensation of human skin give the body the feeling of “touch”. The baby will feel very comfortable and has freedom of movement wherever they go.

A contemporary version of traditional Chinese Opium beds.

This piece of furniture was inspired by the craftsmanship of Chinese furniture makers. Traditionally they would only use joints to assemble their pieces, no nails, no screws. Similarly, I proposed to use the same principles of constructing whilst maintaining the visual aesthetics of the originals and attaining to the values of Liberty?s as a client. This piece of furniture is made by CNC routing individual sheets of plywood to a certain pattern, which is later steam bent into its shape and finished by hand. The result is a contemporary version of the traditional Chinese Opium bed, using no nails and no screws. Whilst maintaining the essence and purity of the original, and the arts & crafts values of the Liberty.

Bike Bags

Development of a new product for retail market future travel; commuting on your bicycle

The growing numbers of cycling commuters has created a need for storage of personal items. Bike Bags is enhancing our behavior when cycling, allowing for spontaneous shopping to be easily stored and promotes everyday use and fitness.

The user often chooses a bike based on purpose, typically commuter/city bike for speed and road comfort, which are typically sold without any extras.

Bike Bags address this issue and provides a light-weight and functional bicycle product design to suit the user providing a rack for storage of smaller items and that also conceals the bag when not in use. Its cylindrical shape also works as a mudguard and the lid is featuring a reflective material for user safety on the road.

Cabin size luggage with an incorporated kick-scooter.

With increasing air-travel; trips are short and more frequent, there are new demands and expectations on luggage. ScooterBag is an answer to future travel trends and deals with issues of transportation in long airport corridors and in city environments.

The bag is aimed at business men and women who need quick an easy ways of travelling, professionals that desire to be one step ahead.

With an easy movement the scooter is folded down from its upright position to scooting position at the back of the bag.

The construction of the bag allows for it to be collapsed into half its size to save storage space when the bag is not in use..

This project challenges the boundaries between business and leisure, storage and transportation, with the outcome being a straightforward and functional design response.

A travel cot that ‘grows’ in parallel with the child as they develop from a baby to a toddler by considering safety and personal comfort of mother and baby.

Many mothers are put off by the visual language of the existing travel cot because of their heavy mechanical nature with difficult locks, ‘cage’ like shaped and the weight.

In Bloom is a travel cot that is designed to easily psychologically communicate comfort to the mother as well as the child. The cot is adjustable to create appropriate size for the child as he/she grows. It is for the child to feel safer because of its’ soft and natural colour, giving the feeling of less entrapment.

In bloom is easy to fold and can be transported from one place to another, giving the mother a sense of ease when handling the cot on her own.

Two phones which are quite similar in their form have subtle

two individuals sharing the phone, thus enhancing a more private manner of

communication.

Arts and Crafts integrity with a contemporary twist

The Arts and Crafts movement was inspired by nostalgia for the countryside and by traditional values of craftsmanship and integrity. The High Rise stool, however, takes the modern city for inspiration and gestures at romantic notions of bright lights and excitement, bringing craftsmanship firmly into the contemporary urban arena.

The High Rise barstool follows in the Liberty tradition of comfort, rich patterning and upholstered textures. But instead of floral motifs, the stool’s hard geometric lines and graphic patterns give the design a more masculine edge.

In its manufacture, the stool combines both modern and traditional processes. The upholstered sections of the seat require a modern process of laser cutting, but are finished by hand. The laser technology used to produce the frame pattern also allows for fast and easy production of individual designs. In this way, the stool has the ability to be batch produced whilst still keeping faith with craft sensibilities.

‘Design a product or a piece of furniture that Arthur Liberty would be thrilled to commission were he alive today. - The project adheres to traditional cabinet making disciplines that were closely linked to the arts & crafts movement. These techniques have been reinterpreted, subverted and applied to a different material - aluminium. The cabinet plays with concepts of artificiality and the contemporizing of traditional cabinet craft sensibilities: The exterior wall frame is dulled back untreated aluminium sheet finish. The façade is casted wood grain. This tactile surface is stripped back and highly polished to give precedence to the functionality of the piece – push to open drawers / cupboards. Intricate details in the wood panels have been emphasized by sandblasting. Natural inconsistancys within the wood eg. knots are used to an aesthetical and functional advantage where their locations on the facade incinuates where one pushes to reveal the

cabinet interior. The interior is powder-coated in bold lime green…a process in-keeping with the materiality of the piece. All joining details are designed to be out of sight again, to give primacy to the contrasting surface finishes.

Mixing the traditional and contemporary: decorative furniture designed based on Chinese convex and concave philosophy.

Chinese antique furniture always embraces deep meanings and splendid craftsmanship. The design of Side Table incorporates the Chinese philosophy convex and concave to give it a strong reflection of oriental culture. In the meanwhile, the designer maintains the modern elements in terms of material choice and colour combination.

Liberty has a long tradition in collecting and selling unique and high quality multi-cultural furniture. The design of the Side Table is trying to illustrate the ideology of modern art and craft by using contemporary technology to create traditional hollow-out furniture pattern; to use high technology to accurately and efficiently cut different abstract pattern of each layer, and put seven layers into the same level, finally to comprise an effect of a high standard “handcraft”. There are equal gaps between each layer in order to reduce the overall weight yet maintaining the solid built, what is more, such design creates a dynamic decoration result under various lighting environment.

A Contemporary Coffee Table with Traditional Values.

Liberty was looking for a piece of furniture that Arthur Liberty would be thrilled to commission were he alive today. The Q.T. table embodies craft values but with a contemporary twist. It is a response to a gap in the high-end furniture market for a quality, medium sized wooden coffee table which could be viewed as an investment piece. The concept was based on extensive turning and material experimentation. The tradition of using turned legs in furniture has been updated by contrasting pale Lime against darker European Oak. The leg profile is also a modern take on a traditional leg shape. The table balances qualities of craftsmanship, materiality and quality against those of eclecticism and innovation. Qualities that it shares with the Liberty brand.

'Dressed up' dining chairs for Liberty

People often leave their coats on the back of chairs to claim it and we are just left with a trace of the absent user of the chair, a clue to their existence. Stitching a coat into the chair itself highlights this mysterious quality and plays tricks with people that were not aware that the coat was actually stitched into the upholstery. The back of the chair has been made to the same measurements as an average male so you feel like you are dining with other people whilst you eat. Is it possible to aknowledge emotions that objects might give rise to other than the satisfaction of usefulness?

In the context of Liberty’s expressive ecclectism, within this ultimately comfortable and refined environment, I looked for the uncanny, a mystery surrounding objects with emotion, asking myself how can a product be given a soul?

Romantic in essence, this product makes of emotion an aesthetic experience. Familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, it deliberately combines a bird-like appearance with a soft mechanic feel, creating a strong contrast between the natural and the machine-made.

Project which explores formal conventions in furniture design and responds to Liberty’s values and ideals.

Liberty of London is a company with a long tradition on trading with unique an extravagant quality products. Today, this outstanding store in Central London still holds the former philosophies which inspired its foundation, back to the 19th century.

Chast of Drewers is a chest of drawers which reads again and between the lines the inherited aesthetics. Twisting the formal conventions on how it is laid on the floor, it has a completely different approach to its formal tradition. However, the materials used (walnut) as well as the methods of construction follow the tradition and are honest with this typology of design. Only a few formal features have been changed comparing to other pieces of furniture of the same family, according to contemporary approaches to function, form and aesthetics and visual literacy.

The Chast of Drewers is an extravagant design that keeps the functional use but, at the same time, explores the limits of secondary issues that nowadays have become capital goods evolved from the original product.

Quality, uniqueness and special are the answers to tradition, innovation and contemporary identities.

Seeing Liberty as a brand of contemporary and tradition, 'Siamese' is designed to look both modern and classical, using the appearance of traditional wooden chairs and form a new styled, sculpture-like piece of furniture which is also practical to be used in homes. The craftsmanship, which is an important factor of Liberty's furniture, is shown in 'Siamese' as there is no joints between the chairs. Split & Link is a coffee table which is embodied with strong craft sensibilities and values, as the materiality and the concept are the essential of the design. The neon lighting running across the table surface represents the splitting concept. It symbolises the conflicts that occur in our everyday lives with one another. When the light is on, the brilliance acts as a media which attracts the users to gather around the table and leads them to understand the importance of using face to face conversations to solve problems together. Through our senses of sight and touch from the usage of the coffee table, together with the verbal communication between the users, the split at the same time becomes a link.
