Yesterday I spent a lot of time trying to track down information on this bench, and then for any other photo of the bench that might take me to a useful link....I gave up.

However, I am persistent, and this morning I searched for what was written as a heading on the bench i.e. Esk Coastal Habitat, and way down the URL list I spotted "There Is Another Alphabet - Invisible Dust", I nearly didn't click, but luckily I did and bingo!

invisibledust.com/projects/thereisanotheralphabet

And so discovered there are three three ‘There is another alphabet‘ benches, so we missed the other two; and that they date from 2022, so much newer than we realised.

The title comes from a poem by Dejan Stojanovic: “There is another alphabet, whispering from every leaf, singing from every river, shimmering from every sky.”

The link above has a pictorial map showing where the benches are.

As part of Wild Eye, the three sculptural benches were situated around Whitby Harbour, and were created with designs by local people about the wildlife of the Esk Estuary in collaboration with artists Juneau Projects.

BTW the list cross references to what is shown on bench - I have highlighted A, B and C with notes.

A. Beadlet anemone

B. Bottlenose dolphin

C. Cod

...

S. Sandwich tern - I think that might have been on the back.

Like all hummingbirds, the Anna’s spends much of its life in overdrive. When flying, their hearts, no bigger than an infant’s fingernail, beat 1,200 times a minute. Every 60 seconds they breathe 250 times. In a typical day they will visit hundreds of flowers, dining every 15 minutes. It’s not an idle pursuit — they must consume twice their body weight in insects and nectar on a daily basis just to survive. They drink the nectar with tubular tongues that work like pumps and are so long that, when retracted, coil up inside the birds’ heads, around their skulls and eyes. The nectar, which is 26 per cent sugar, acts like rocket fuel, powering their high-octane lifestyle.

The ability to slip into a type of hibernation on chilly nights helps the Anna’s survive our cold and rainy winters. The other factor is the abundance of backyard feeders and ornamental flowers found throughout the city, which provide them with a year-round food supply, in addition to the insects, spiders and tree sap they also feed upon.

Dear friends!

Thank you so much for your kind comments and visits! They are appreciated.

Some species of click beetle, half of them all look the same so it's hard to tell. Probably have to do something dumb like count antennae segments.

Foto boba sem nenhum conteúdo, mas o tédio durante a madrugada é grande!

Ou talvez até tenha, para mim, pensando melhor: aí estão dois brinquedos muito importantes de duas diferentes fases da minha vida.

In the series below, swirling, dark, ominous clouds gave way to blinding rain and then to sunshine and a double rainbow that gradually faded away.

Have a great weekend and thanks for the visit.
