Open top Routemaster RM80 (JSJ 748) pulls away from it's stop on Northumberland Avenue, London's West End on another open top tour. Now working for 'The Classic Tour' this bus has worked for Lothian Buses in Edinburgh for Mac Tours and for Premium Tours in London. Snapped on my way home from the office to Charing Cross Underground Station on a cold wet December night. .

As I've remarked before, back in my early days of bus photography, I would have to have really have been given to a bout of gay abandon to raise my camera with expensive film, to photograph a 'lightweight' PSV. It's a decision with the onset of greater enlightenment which I've generally regretted. There's a whole representative swathe of our country's coaching history missing from my own collection as a result. In my defence however, film had to be used conservatively and often there wasn't sufficient for things which really did interested me.
As time moved on and I became a little more flush my take on things softened. Therefore, when out with one of my own coaches in the 1990s and I spotted this Plaxton Bodied bedford SB in Llangollen, it had its photograph taken!
North Wales Classic Tours was the operator, but other than the fact they also acquired a long lasting 'Butterfly Grille'd Petrol engined SB from near to me, I know nothing about them. They seemed to be one of a number of erstwhile operators of tours taking in, or working out of the Llangollen who seem to have ceased.
37685 and 37516 head the 1st Royal Scotsman of the 2014 season 1H79 Edinburgh - Keith and seen passing Lindores Loch between Ladybank and Perth. The 37s were required because this season NR have not given the dispensation for class 47s and 57s to run on the Kyle of Lochalsh line, so the "Classic" tour must convey class 37s. Do hope both of these are RA5 versions. I'm not so sure...

After years of active service throughout Scandinavia and Spain with EF (Education First), this particular favourite has been repatriated to Britain for a thorough restoration, re-emerging earlier this year to add its own classic dimension to the busy tourist scene.

SLZ 3505 is a very tidy looking Volvo B10M-62/Plaxton Premiere 350 coach in the fleet of R&R (Beeline), Warminster, Wiltshire. It was new to Gardiner (Silver Choice Coaches), East Kilbride, South Lanarkshire as N372 EAK in May 1996, although this may well have been as a Demonstrator, as it was with Kirkby, Anston (Q), just two months later. It joined Wilson, Carnwath, Lanarkshire in April 1997, but was back with Kirkby, Anston (Q) by April 2000. After a handful of loans, it had moved to Knowles (Classic Tours), Paignton, Devon by October 2000, moving on again to Richardson (AST Academic & Specialist Tours), Midhurst, West Sussex in April 2001. It joined R&R in May 2006 and was given its current mark in August 2006.

Back in August 1990 I visited Oxford for the day where I photographed Lothian's The Oxford Classic Tour BFS48L, a Leyland Atlantean / Alexander open-topper. The bus had been converted earlier in the year and was based at Tappins premises.

One of the earlier AN68,s ..I drove this one at Marine when she had her roof ..In 1989 this one and 5 of her sisters were hurriedly converted to open top to compete with Guide Friday . LRT tour drivers , took the fares , did the driving , did the commentary often with the rain pouring into the cab ..but the tips were fantastic !!
