Built in 1929, on the Natl. Reg. of Hist. places, this gothic revival skyscraper was designed by architect Karl Vitzthum. The sparkling white terra cotta exterior has ornate architectural details befitting gothic revival style. Featured in the 2009 movie Public Enemies as a hangout for John Dillinger.

This is the southern bellevedere at the top of the stairs at Bayonne Park. The park was built with a donation at the turn of the 20th century from Andrew Carnegie, who had also donated money to build the city's library. Bayonne was a nearby resort and beach area for wealthy New Yorkers back in the days when Newark Bay was filled with real water, rather than the chemical soup that it has become. The park had an amusement pier, whose pilings now are used by the waterfowl in the bird sanctuary.

The skylight was fading and the park lights were coming on. I could see that there would be an interesting contrast between the natural beauty of the sunset and the classic architectural beauty of the structure and I set up my equipment to compose it. It was apparent that the dynamic range of the scene was going to exceed my camera's ability so I knew that I would need to bracket and combine exposures via HDR processing back at the computer.

We combined exposures to render the interior and applied some local contrast to emphasize the detail in the materials of the columns and then blended that with the sunset which didn't need the same type of post processing. The result is very close to what I envisioned the shot to be. (View On Black)
