Toby Hughes (Double Bass)
Programme:
Shostakovich Chamber Symphony 8, op 110 a
Bottesini Concerto 2 for Bass and orchestra
Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, op 64
Prokofiev Classical Symphony
A welcome return to the festival for Manchester Camerata, in the first of 2 appearances, with a programme including Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony and Mendelssohn’s much loved Violin Concerto.
Shostakovich’s Chamber Symphony no 8 is in fact a reworking of his String Quartet no 8 for string orchestra by Rudolf Barshai. The quartet was composed in just three days during a visit to a still bomb ravaged Dresden in 1960 and it was inscribed ‘In memory of victims of fascism and war’, although many have read into it an opposition to all totalitarianism; Shostakovich (1906-1975) was in turns in and out of favour with the Soviet regime throughout his career.

Day 30, and the last one! 😁 Lucas Debargue.
It was my personal portrait marathon: I drew portraits of my favorite musicians every day in the month, I tried to learn how to make stylized, characteristic, iconic portraits-illustrations. I will sum up the results of the marathon a little later - I want to collect all the drawings in one pdf-file, so that it would be more convenient to watch and laugh.

The action (moving parts) of a Kawai Grand Piano. In stark contrast to other manufacturers such as Steinway, Kawai use a carbon fibre-resin composite for their actions. This is one of the most significant developments in piano technology in a century. It allows for a faster repetition of notes. Shot with a Lumix S1R and a Laowa Probe lens, 82 images at various focal distances have been stacked together, giving this photo an almost Kubrickesque quality that appears more science fiction than classical music.
Deep inside the action (the moving parts) of one of the world's finest grand pianos. Fazioli make around 100 of these instruments a year, each handcrafted with over 8000 individual parts. Shot with a Lumix S1R and a Laowa Probe lens, 100 images at various focal distances have been stacked together for sharpness from front to back, giving a distinct architectural appearance reminiscent of a concert hall or film set.

... I'm getting kinda lazy about processing new photos... probably because of how bloody annoyingly reflective my laptop screen is... Sometimes I think I can see the reflection way better than what is actually on the screen...

Edinburgh’s Usher Hall stands proud in Festival Square, crowned with the bold yellow banner of the Edinburgh International Festival (EIF) — now in full swing. A Grade A-listed concert hall opened in 1914 and gifted to the city by whisky distiller Andrew Usher, this curvaceous classical venue has long been one of Scotland’s premier stages for orchestral, operatic, and vocal performance.
The EIF, launched in 1947 to uplift post-war Europe through the power of the arts, has grown into a world-renowned cultural event. Distinct from the Fringe, the EIF focuses on curated excellence: opera, classical music, dance, and theatre of the highest international calibre. In this year’s edition, themed “The Truth We Seek,” global artists interrogate our world through bold performances — from Mahler to modern ballet, and Bach to boundary-breaking theatre.
Here, the Usher Hall plays its leading role once again — where truth is amplified by acoustics, and every crescendo echoes with meaning.
