Spring in the Desert

Claret cup cactus is native to the desert areas of the American Southwest. It grows wild in Juniper Pinyon woodlands, creosote scrub and Joshua tree forests

Also known as: Hedgehog Cactus, Mojave Mound Cactus, Kingcup Cactus, That Spiny Thing You’ll Regret Touching

This cactus is the prom queen of the desert—short, spiky, and radiant in red. The flowers look like someone dipped a shot glass in cherry Kool-Aid and dared it to grow on a porcupine.

It thrives in dry, rocky places where most plants say, “Nope,” and curl up to die. Not the Claret Cup. This one digs in, throws shade (literally none), and blooms like it’s starring in a spring fashion show for hummingbirds.

Why do I love it?

Because it’s tough, it’s gorgeous, and it only stabs you if you get too close, which is also how I feel about some relatives.

Couplet:

It blooms like a torch in the desert's embrace,

Just don't try to hug it—it'll scratch up your face.

All my trees are turning wonderful colours.

Still very wet and windy here, so another reminder of summer.A beautiful fuchsia ,never sure how to describe the colour, is it red, claret, burgundy or magenta .........

There's nothing quite like wandering the mesa when the cacti are blooming!

This is a rose that I planted 22 years ago, and it is a firm favourite, with its lovely velvety claret petals.

My only "proper" shot from a week skiing in Tignes last week. First evening, also the only clear night we had! Val Claret under a moonlit Grande and Petit Balme.

Nearest I could get in flowers to match BCFC colours

such a bountiful year for these Claret Cups

Burnley 2 - 1 Sheffield United

So we will be back in the Premier League next season; it’ll always be difficult for us in that league… we don’t have the money that the big city clubs have… but we’ll always give it our best shot.

It’s great for the town and surrounding areas too.

I bought my season ticket for next season back in March. It was the same price regardless of what division we’d be playing in. My seat was £520 for the season.

Proud to be a Claret! ♥️💙

One of the first cacti to bloom in West Texas.

Fleeting claret and gold sunset light shines above the western mountains bordering the blustery, icy magnificence of Abraham Lake, near Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada.

Experiences come and go with the passing years, and memories might fade, but few places stand out in my mind like Abraham Lake. Of course, there are the signature stacks of methane bubbles trapped like miniature lenticular clouds in the ice, but perhaps the greater joy was in all the other frozen colors, reflections, shapes and wonders shining and rippling in that low winter light.

Thanks for viewing!

Mesa County, Colorado.

The beautiful claret cup cactus flower.

If ever there was a scene too big to fit into the frame of any camera, it's this overlook in Alberta.

I had to shoot a five shot vertical panorama in order to stitch together this composition.

This allowed me to capture not only the composition that I saw with my own eyes but had the added bonus of making the peaks appear taller than they really are.

I know that I bleat on about mosquitos a lot in my vlogs but this morning was pretty much a breaking point for me.

I donated so much blood to those evil freeloaders that I should receive some kind of award or at least some free cookies like you get at the donor bank.

That day I resolved to only ever visit the Rockies during colder seasons.

To this day I continue to deny free meals to those erratically flying claret scroungers.

Thanks for looking.

Gavin

Die Pflanze hat nun die stattliche Größe von 7cm.

Er ist absolut winterhart und steht bei uns das ganze Jahr draußen.
