Clapham Junction

14th February 2015

The Falcon in Clapham Junction.

There has been an Inn here since the early 1700's.

It is said that certain parts of the building date back 275 years.

The majority of what we see now, dates from the 1870's, when it was rebuilt as a Hotel with a public house on the ground floor.

The interior was remodelled in 1896, making it a big open plan space. With extensive use of oak and glass panels, it is on the campaign for real ale's inventory of historic pub interiors.

It also entered the Guinness book of records, for having the longest bar counter in a public house.

GWR green liveried 47500 'Great Western' heads the 1215 Manchester Piccadilly-Brighton Intercity service away from Clapham Junction on 21 June 1986.

Class 455s number 871 and 719 approach Clapham Junction with the 2J17 0906 Waterloo to Hampton Court. These units and the remaining 10 sets are due to be withdrawn from service at Christmas, these reliable workhorses will be missed in the South East along with their brightly coloured liveries.

The backdrop to this shot has changed immensely during my lifetime and is now really impressive. In this view the circular tower is St Georges Wharf next to it is the Schard which is actually next to London Bridge station and next to that is the Thames City complex which covers the old Nine Elms depot plus much more land, building work started in 2015 and is still being developed today. Expect to pay 1.5 to 1.7 million £ for a three bedroom apartment.

The day by day comings and goings at Clapham Junction Station will soon no longer be carried out with the stunning livery of the class 455s as a back drop. The end of the working life of these joyously colourful units is approaching fast as they are to be retired from service on Christmas Eve.

5719 is bathed in morning sunshine as passengers disembark, she is working the 0937 Waterloo to Chessington.

56103 is working solo with 6Y20 10:45 Cliffe - Chessington stone train. Unusually running via Barnes the train is seen here passing Clapham Junction for the first time in its journey, heading west through platform 6. Having completed a loop via Barnes, Acton, Willesden and Kensington Olympia the train would pass through the station again some 45 minutes later, this time through platform 17 in order to access the route onto the Brighton Mainline, and then the South West Mainline via Stretham.

The shot required a quick dash through the subway when I realised that the train was going to head through platform 6 rather than 5, ruining my planned shot- luckily things all worked out alright despite a 12 car desiro doing its best to get in the way (and just clearing this shot just about in time!).

A London Overground class 378/2 unit, which appears to have recently returned from refurbishment at Widnes, sits in platform 17 at Clapham Junction prior to forming the 16.11 to Stratford.

Usually 'Mildmay' line services operate from platform 1 every 15 minutes, but extra units are introduced into the working during Monday to Friday peak periods to boost the service level. Whilst extra trains are added (and later taken out of service) platform 17 is utilised. This unit had worked as empty stock from Wembley 'C' Sidings, via Kensington Olympia, where twelve London Overground units can be stabled overnight.

A busy location and certainly a place to be if you wanted to phot Electro Diesel Class 73's was from the A3 road bridge at Clapham Junction. 73202 'Royal Observer Corps' with its rake of BR IC liveried Mk2 stock with powered GLV on the rear works the non-stop 14.00 London Victoria - Gatwick Airport in July 1993.

These formations worked the Gatwick Expresses from 1984-2005.

Running 40 minutes late from Slade Green (having started almost 50 mins late) ROG 37 884 'Cepheus' appears under the Victoria Lines while a Gatwick Express 387 runs overhead at Longhedge Junction. 37 884 was hauling a Southeastern Class 465 EMU to Doncaster, probably for scrapping? By the time it reached Doncaster it arrived 21 minutes early!

66744 leads 5Z65 08:09 Eastleigh Arlington (Zg) to Stewarts Lane T&R.S.M.D Brittanic Explorer ECS into Clapham Junction on 05/09/25.

It's been a long time since I was last at this spot between Longhedge and Latchmere Junctions between Wandsworth Road and Clapham Junction. A few more buildings have sprung up in the background since. But it's a good place to catch some freight workings transiting from the South, around the capital to West London. RTT had some interesting workings listed on this particular Saturday and inspired by a recent photo taken here by another Flickr user I thought I'd make my way there once again with the added bonus of some rare sunshine!

GBRf 66 795 'Bescot LDC' comes under the lines to Victoria above with London in the background with the tanks from Grain to Colnbrook. This loco seems to share this duty alongside 66 794 (in it's retro petroleum sub sector livery).

A bit of a gamble that the train would use its booked route platform 6 here and not be put through platform 5 which ultimately paid off allowing this view from the footbridge.
