Piccadilly Circus Underground Station (Bakerloo and Piccadilly Lines), 12 April 2025.
It was opened in March 1906 by the Baker Street & Waterloo Railway (BS&WR), commonly known as the Bakerloo, on its line from Baker Street to Lambeth North. Originally there was a surface building (housing the booking hall) designed by Leslie Green, Architect of the Underground Electric Railways of London (UERL), of which the BS&WR was a constituent. The station fronted Piccadilly itself. It was of modest scale with just a single bay. The upper frieze contained the words ‘Baker Street and Waterloo Railway’ and the lower frieze ‘Station Piccadilly Circus Station’.
The BS&WR was soon followed by the Great Northern, Piccadilly and Brompton Railway (GNP&BR), commonly known as the Piccadilly, which opened its platforms here in December 1906 on its line from Finsbury Park to Hammersmith. At the same time two frontages by Leslie Green were built separated by other buildings from the Bakerloo building but linked to its booking hall. One was of four bays on Jermyn Street and had the words ‘Bakerloo and Piccadilly Tube Railway’ on its lower frieze. The upper frieze was blank. The other entrance fronted The Haymarket and was of three bays with the letters ‘Piccadilly Circus Station’ on the lower frieze. Subsequently the Haymarket Hotel was built above all three stations.
By 1907 the ever-increasing number of passengers using the station had rendered it inadequate but it was not until 1925-28 that a new large sub-surface booking office and circulating area was built, opening in December 1928. This replaced the booking hall in Green’s surface building although this remained open until July 1930 and even after that its three entrances remained open until 1990 when it (and the Haymarket Hotel and adjacent buildings) were demolished to make way for redevelopment.
The new station was built in Neo-Classical and Art Deco style by the UERL’s consultant architect Charles Holden assisted by the UERL’s Chief Architect Stanley Heaps and engineer Sir Harley Hugh Dalrymple-Hay. Only the finest materials were used. Cream Travertine marble clad the walls and the pillars were faced with red scagliola. Signage lettering was cream Johnson Sans on brushed dark bronze.
Pictured is in the booking hall is one of Holden's bronze directional signs to the trains dating from.

When selecting a cladding timber it’s important to choose one that is naturally resistant to decay so Western Red Cedar, Siberian Larch and Thermowood are all popular choices. They offer a great deal of protection if installed correctly and are well maintained, lasting a lifetime and more. goo.gl/ngc4Yg
