In Austin Texas to meet with partners on our Respect Big Bend Project. You can read more about it here: respectbigbend.org/
Took the opportunity to take a few pics of the city skyline.
Another view of the beautiful city of Marseille I took while attending the IUCN World Conservation Congress.
Visited Oregon to visit my son and for some snowshoeing at Crater Lake, wave watching on the coast and alittle urban culture. This shot taken from the Burnside Bridge on New Year's Eve in Portland.
Cool old neighborhood of Le Panier near where I stayed in Marseille - fun to explore especially since I was up before dawn thanks to jet lag!
Another pic from the awesomely chaotic and crazy Varanasi! Despite the normal chaos of Varanasi, the mornings were peaceful and serene. It was easy to make your way thru the city and find some interesting encounters.
Abstract shot from Bourbon Street where marching band was moving thru - loved the people and building reflected in the tuba-shines!
After Austin it was off to Lima Peru for meetings. While there we got to watch Peru beat Paraguay to make it into the World Cup. Was fun to watch it with a giant crowd of crazy fans!
After over 2 years finally made the journey back to Delhi India...right in time for the most brutal heatwave. But great to be back!
Jalebi follows humanities long standing standard formula for happiness - three parts sugar, one part fat - heat and enjoy! My kids loved these when they were there, I think every time we saw them they wanted to stop. Here on a work trip I stopped, but only for a photo! Enjoy these virtual Jalebies!
Another skyline pic from Zagreb featuring St Mark's Church. Off to India so a little slow this week but back in the glow of the internet soon enough and back to checking out all the great photos in the Flickrsphere! Happy 2020!
In Austin Texas last week for meetings and managed to slip away in the evening for a little photography - caught this shot of the city skyline reflected in the Colorado River.
Will bounce around alittle with this series from Slovenia to Croatia and back again - pictured here a shot of the sun setting in Zagreb - what an amazing city!
To me a city emerges in its details – one of my favorites cites is Florence Italy - a city know for art, architecture and music…and street art? When visiting Florence a few years ago I noticed street art inspired by classic art, all with snorkel masks and scuba diving gear. After some sleuthing I discovered they were done by Blub! Blub is a mysterious artist whose identity is unknown. I became obsessed with finding as many as I could and finding out more. While Florence has so many things to see it was these works of art and humor that added that special touch. You can find out more online about the mysterious Blub! I highly recommend it and to keep your eyes peeled next time your in Florence!
Insanely busy of late so apologies for the slow response. Posting the last few photos from Varanasi trip - been back to India twice since this trip so more India photos to come - its a photographers paradise!
More time travel - this time a street scene from Dehradun. Always a ball to sit and watch the action in the street in India.
After Santa Fe was off to Houston the following week to attend The Nature Conservancy's All Science Conference - was great to see so much great science and see people I hadn't seen in years and meet so many new folks - go TNC!
Man prays amongst the chaos of Kathmandu - such a city of contrasts - beautiful, quiet, temples, and noisy chaotic activity. Had planned an epic trek in the Himalayas but with COVID it was cancelled - someday!
You can feel the "cool-ness" coming off this group. Kidding aside they were quite good. Out for a walk with my son and we listened to them for quite awhile.
Tried a few times to get shots of the iconic NOLA streetcars - mostly unsuccessfully but was fun trying!
Into the first leg of almost a month on the road and spend my first flight looking at old photos - here's a shot of UB Mongolia from "The Square" that I don't think I posted before.
I really enjoyed the view from The Lotrščak Tower - watched the gentleman shoot off the cannon at noon and came back to watch the sunset. The weather wasn't great, raining a bit, but cleared up for the late afternoon so headed to the tower, ate some dinner and enjoyed myself thoroughly! Hope to be back again Zagreb! This time with some more advanced planning!
Bright Lights Big City - NYC from the air on Newark to Delhi flight. Started at the end of the trip with the India series with a shot of Mumbai - ending with the beginning!
My latest trip to India was pretty easy on the in country travel with only 2 trips outside of Delhi in the course of ~ a month. This included a trip to Mumbai where we demo-ed our new renewable energy siting tool. You can check it out here: www.tncindia.in/siteright/
While waiting outside for my colleagues to pick me up I snapped this pic of one of the older buses in Mumbai. Love these big red buses!
On the way back to the hotel the moon rose on the horizon and was ruby red and large - tried to hustle back to the room to get a pic - the moon wasn't big any longer but stayed red-ish. Jakarta looks pretty interesting at night!
OK Old Delhi is literally nuts but here i was speaking figuratively given the shot of the gentleman literally surrounded by his product which includes a variety of nuts!
Another shot of my big night out in Singapore - would have loved a little more time to get to know the place better.
A shot down into the chaos of Kathmandu's Thamel Market - the beautiful, dirty, chaotic, sacred and fantastic city of Kathmandu Nepal!
I have Croatia & Zagreb on my mind this morning - as if things couldn't get worse, dealing with COVID19 Zagreb is hit with a bad earthquake. I hope folks there are managing! We will keep you in our thoughts! Pictured here a painting outside a barber shop in Zagreb!
A pic from the subway in Manhattan - had a chuckle over the advertisement for a show about Punk - as a former punk all I can say is oooh how far we have fallen.
In Leh India at the moment, enjoying the Himalayas but struggling to even upload a photo but back soon in the glow of the internet and will be visiting all my flickr friends.
Took a friend and colleague from TNC's India program to the AMNH in NYC - the museum plays a role in me becoming a biologist, including exhibits like this one that gave a chance for a city kid to see there was more to the world than concrete. Sorry AMNH for all those times I cut school and snuck in with other kids there on a school trip - actually not really!
Street shot of Oxford UK - morning light peeked out from behind the clouds for a few moments took the opportunity to catch a pic.
A walk through the dingy bylanes of slums, which cover a vast expanse of area in Mumbai, now has a positive feel when one sees those dark and dull houses looking all colourful and vibrant.
The splash of colorful hues on slums is all thanks to efforts of city-based artist and social worker Rouble Nagi's Musaal Mumbai project.
One of the last pics I took before knocking off for the night - makes me think of all the people and all their stories!
The two main parts of Rishikesh are on both sides of the Ganges River connected by two "rope" bridges - pictured here traffic backed up for quite a ways as people stepped around this cow that decided to take a rest right in the middle of the bridge.
Dhobi Ghat - Mumbai‘s 140-year-old, open-air laundromat where it is estimated that each day over half a million pieces of clothing are sent there from hotels, hospitals, and homes to be washed, dried, folded and returned! At first glance Dhobi Ghat seems chaotic. But there is order in this chaos. Washermen called dhobis wash clothes and hang them out to dry in a manner that optimizes both time and space. Each article has a code written on its back that allows the correct piece of laundry to get back to its owner. This system is amazingly efficient and one of the main reasons for Dhobi Ghat ’s popularity.
