City gate from the end of the 14th century with preserved customs and gatekeeper's houses.

Of a small settlement to the Ee in the 10th century it developed into an important city, where trade, industry and fishery thrived. By growing prosperity and look to the commonalty of Zierikzee on March 11th 1248 municipal right was granted king. After the medieval flowering period calamity emergency with fires, shipping disasters, epidemics and floods followed.

The 17th century characterised himself by second flowering of the trade and fishery. Then the number of inhabitants stepped very drastic in the course of the 18th century stagnation and decreased. The large industrial developments went to Zierikzee past for the greater part. In contrast to other cities old buildings remained saved. The wealth to monuments is mainly considered as a precious possession and in 1970s has been discovered by the tourists.

Nowadays Zierikzee is, with wide 10,000 inhabitants, the administrative seat of the new and has in this a centre function. In the historical town centre with a lot of shops and sociable pavements it is for both the tourist and inhabitant well stays.

I went to Sempach a third time to photograph the city gate. This time I had Portra 400 with me and my new Shen Hao TZ - 45 IIB with the 6x17 filmback. I'm reasonably happy with the result - but had to cut off a lot on the left and right because there were buildings that were interfering with the view.

Behind the old bridge you can see the "Volmolen"This is located next to the Koppelpoort. This building was completed in the 17th century built against the Koppelpoort and the city wall and used for the textile industry (wool and cloth). A "Volmolen" (full mill) is a tool to make woven wool full; the tissue is kneaded in tubs with sand, boiling water and urine.

As a result, the fabric fills into a sheet and becomes water-repellent.

“A Feast of Honor”

Step into my time machine, fasten your seat belts tight and travel with me to the Amersfoort of a few years later. In honor of all famous Dutch people who were born in Amersfoort, a cycling round is being organized. At the start we see the world top cyclist Wilco Kelderman being interviewed by Pieter Jan Hagens. A little further on is the stage where the line-up of artists is Diggy Dex, Bizzey and Jiggy Djé. The stage is decorated with Piet Mondriaan’s typical world-famous patterns. The one who talks everything together is the popular and sympathetic radio DJ Igmar Felicia. World class top athlete Femke Bol has been invited as guest of honour, who will be honored for her latest top performances. An intro by Fien Vermeulen sounds from the speakers ‘Welcome to our medieval city with historic buildings, city walls and canals where the world famous painter Piet Mondriaan(aka Modrian) saw his first light. A city that can be seen as a breeding nest of human talent'. From a cloud former sidecar champion of the world Ton van Heugten, who unfortunately died too early, watches everything together with Piet Mondriaan and the many other deceased famous talents from Amersfoort.

Kaster besitzt zwei Stadttore.

Kaster is a district of the town of Bedburg in the Rhein-Erft district in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Kaster has two city gates. If you come from the west in the old town of Kaster you will see the Agathator. In the east towards the Erft is the Erft Gate.

The Agathator, a square two-storey tower, was first mentioned in 1382 as "porzen". After that it appeared in documents as "Buschpfortz", "Veltportze" or "Agathen pfortz". The gate was not designed as a drawbridge, but it did have a portcullis. There used to be a ditch about 110 m wide in front of the gate, which was crossed with a bridge. In the middle of the bridge was a bastion (a closed fortification) with a city gate as an upstream defense unit (barbican facility).

The southern most of the medieval city gates of the town of Viterbo. The only decoration of the gate is the town crest: a lion with a palm tree. Right next to gate is Palazzo di Donna Olimpia. The house actually dates to the beginning of the 15th century, when it was built by monks who needed a safe place to retreat to when their own abbey was unsafe. Donna Olimpia Maidalchini - the sister-in-law of the pope - acquired the palace in 1564. It was later turned into an orphanage. It is now home to several local clubs and associations in Viterbo (and in some need of repair.... Trust me, I have been inside!).

I chose a sepia treatment here, to deal with the glaring light in the original shot (a midday sun in Italy in the summer is hard to work with) and to make the information sign and the car less eye-catching.

One of the originally three city gates to the German town of Wittstock. This is Gröper Tor (Gröper Gate), dating to the 14th century - and with the pyramid roof added in 1503. The street now runs next to the gate to the right, which it has done for at least 200 years.

"Schöner Turm" means "Beautiful Tower" - this is one of the names of the medieval "Landshuter Tor", a city gate erected in 1408 in late gothic style.

It was damaged during the Thirty Years War, the original hip roof was replaced by the current canopy roof during 1660 and 1664.

One of Poland’s most beautiful cities, Gdansk, on the Baltic Sea, has played major roles in history, especially in the 20th-century. It was the 1939 flash point of World War II, and then in 1980, the birthplace of the Solidarnosc labor movement, ushering the end of Communist domination in Eastern Europe. Gdansk’s Old Town, painstakingly reconstructed to its Hanseatic League glory after being leveled in World War II, is a highlight. The 14th-century Town Hall houses the city’s historical museum.

The fortified complex was built in different eras. The Torrione overlooked the ancient Porta a Terra of the city, was built in 1212 in the period of maximum splendor of the Piombinese communal age, the only surviving testimony of that era. The tower, also known as Sant'Antonio or Porta Inferi, was probably equipped with one or more bells, used in case of anniversaries or dangers

The Gate of Seville fortress is one of the most emblematic elements of the extensive and extremely rich architectural heritage that Carmona boasts.

Although archeological remains dated between the 14th and the 12th century B. C. have been found, it has been shown that the origins of Carmona date to the 9th century B.C., which is why this monument – which was declared as being of historic and artistic interest, even before that honour was bestowed on the Giralda in Sevilla – reflects, as if it were a diary, the milestones and events in the history of the West which the town has taken either part in or witnessed.

Indeed, the culture of all the inhabitants of the peninsular, whether they be the western Mediterranean peoples, the Phoenicians, the Carthaginians, the Romans, the Moors and, finally, the Christians, can be said to have been engraved on the ashlar stone of the Gate of Seville.

In order to repel Roman army attacks, the Carthaginians built a bastion on top of the original tower – dating from the VIII century B.C. – giving it the first traces of its present heavy, powerful quadrangular design. During the rule of the Roman Emperor Augustus, the Carthaginian structure was reinforced and reformed, as can be seen in the group of defensive gates that have survived to the present day. A temple was built on top of the bastion, from which the base is still partly preserved.

These alterations and additions and others carried out by the Romans, especially in the first century AD, transformed Carmona into “the strongest city of the Betica during ancient times”, as Julius Caesar, who himself was very familiar with the town´s defensive capability, proclaimed.

During the Islamic period, several additions and alterations were carried out; a horseshoe arch from the Caliphate period, – dating to the 10th century -, and another external pointed horseshoe arch from the Almohad age, (12th century). Later, during the reign of king Pedro I, in the 14th century, other alterations were made to the site.

In the 1970s, the houses which adjoined the fortress were torn down and, in 1973, the last major changes were carried out, enabling the restoration and opening of the Presos Bajo and Alto rooms, the Aljibes courtyard and the Golden Tower, from which magnificent views of all the town of Carmona can be enjoyed.
