interior view from one of the many ruins after the 1972 earthquake that destroyed large parts of the old city center in managua. these ruins are still inhabited, but now by the poor urban strata instead of by the prosperous middle class for whom this apartment building was built in the modern style of the 1960s.

Vintage German film brochure. Illustrerte Film-Bühne, No. 107. Himmel über den Sümpfen (Maria Goretti). Film special on the Italian film Cielo sulla palude/ Heaven over the Marshes (Augusto Genina, 1949), a historical drama on the life of little (afterwards Saint) Maria Goretti, played by Ines Orsini, and filmed with Caravaggesque cinematography by Aldo Graziati (G.R. Aldo').

In 1902, Maria Goretti, an 11- years old farmer's daughter, living with her family in the marshes area near Rome, was stabbed by the 20-years old Alessandro Serenelli who tried to rape her and lived with his family at the same farm. She died two days after in hospital, after having forgiven her murderer. Serenelli served thirty years in prison and afterward joined a convent. At the time of the film, Goretti was already beatified by Pope Pius XII. In 1950 she would be sanctified by the pope. In the Netherlands and Flanders many Catholic primary schools were named after Maria Goretti.

Little is known about the actress Ines Orsini. Cielo sulla palude was her debut on screen. Two years after she played in a similar religious film drama, La señora de Fátima/ Our Lady of Fatima (Rafael Gil, 1951), also with Fernando Rey. In the 2003 film Les invasions barbares by Denys Arcand, the protagonist has an erotic vision of Orsini in Cielo sula palude.
