"Nursing students enrolled in WSSU’s Child Health Nursing course added a new clinical rotation this summer. Focusing on community nursing roles, the Child Health Nursing course not only conducts clinical in a hospitalized setting but also in community locations such as Head Start and residential care facilities for children. We added a “camp nursing” rotation this year. Nursing students participated in weekly medical screenings for the more than 500 children ages 10 through 18 and their leaders arriving each week of the summer for Boy Scout camp at Raven Knob Boy Scout Reservation in Mount Airy, NC. In addition to the pre-camp medical paperwork and screenings, the students assisted the Health Lodge staff in providing healthcare for scouts, scout masters, and camp staff seeking medical care at Raven Knob’s new Health Lodge. Since its opening in 2012, the Health Lodge at Raven Knob, has offered state of the art first aid and screenings for camp related issues like dehydration, lacerations, animal and insect bites, as well as triage for more life threatening camp-related accidental injuries and complicated health concerns. Raven Knob’s Health Lodge operates 24 hours a day during summer camp with nurses, paramedics, and EMT’s on staff. Collaborating with local physicians and hospitals, the staff provides healthcare to campers and staff. Nursing students also assisted in teaching First Aid merit badge classes along-side Raven Knob staff, where they practiced using growth and developmental principles learned in class to communicate effectively with the scouts. The camp nursing clinical experience was an effective collaboration between nursing faculty at WSSU and representatives of Old Hickory Council located in Winston-Salem, NC. In addition to Raven Knob, nursing students also had an opportunity to experience clinical at Victory Junction Gang Camp in Randleman, North Carolina. Established in 2004 by Kyle and Patty Petty in honor of their son Adam, Victory Junction is a year-round camping facility that serves children, ages 6 to 16, with chronic medical conditions or serious illnesses. Students in this clinical experience had the opportunity to work one on one with children, under the supervision of a WSSU nursing faculty member, who have complex medical conditions requiring medication administration and nursing skills during the week they spend at camp. Without Victory Junction, these children might not be able to attend a summer camp experience, and without willing and experienced volunteers, the camp would not be able to provide these services. We are fortunate to have these two outstanding community organizations serving the summer camp needs of children in North Carolina and surrounding states, as well as giving camp nurses the opportunity to do what they love. The Division of Nursing at WSSU extends special thanks to both camps for allowing us to experience camp nursing this summer!!"
After a tough non-conference schedule that saw the WSSU Rams face two ranked teams, and three playoff teams, the #15 ranked Winston-Salem State Rams will shift focus as they begin their run for another CIAA Title, as the Rams will host the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University in the CIAA opener, at Bowman Gray Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
Elizabeth City State is coming off of a tough 20-19 loss to Benedict last weekend.
This matchup will be the first in two season between the Rams and Vikings, who met three times in two years recently, as the Rams defeated the Vikings in back to back CIAA Championships in 2011 and 2012.
The WSSU Rams opened the season with two straight top 25 games, and must now refocus for another solid challenge from the Elizabeth City State Vikings.
One thing the WSSU Rams must do to help secure this win, is cut down on mental mistakes and penalties. WSSU currently is average 9.7 penalties per game for 83.3 yards per game.
