(034/365) A jar of spicy tomato chutney. For Smile on Saturday theme "made by me". I made at least 20 jars of this last Summer when we had a glut of homegrown onions, garlic, tomatoes, chilies & courgettes. The only ingredients not homegrown were the sultanas & spices. Perfect on a cheese sandwich or to accompany cold meats HSoS!

reason for choosing to make onion chutney
i viewed this delicious photo by sharon of onion chutney meatloaves flic.kr/p/2p4HycK and thought how tasty the chutney looked, i'll have a go ...
notes
i only had 1kg of onion, the recipe asks for 1kg 500gr
i reduced the sugar accordingly but the chutney wouldn't thicken
late in the cooking i added more sugar, that did the job :)
i didn't have any mustard or muscovado sugar so used replacements - plenty of mustard seeds and a dark brown sugar
i decided to use the handblender at the end of the cooking
as the chutney didn't look very pleasing to the eye
glad i did, suddenly looked like what it should be, onion chutney

I haven't made Chutney in years. But, thought I'd make some today since I'm going to be making Samosas this week. The combination should be tasty. This Chutney has all sorts of spices in it including cloves.
Owing to the less than sunny summer we've had this year, I'm left with a larger than usual number of unripened tomatoes. Better buy some more chutney jars.
When three is too many... they give you 4th !!!

Every year, no matter how warm the summer, there are always some of my tomatoes which never ripen. However, they are still put to good use.
Savoury Somerset Cream Tea
I had a few days holiday in Somerset. The weather was simply superb as the heatwave continues.
i just had to try this "Somerset Savoury Cream Tea" from a local farmers wife in the garden next to her kitchen.
Cheesy scones - cream cheese and home made runner bean chutney.
Absolutely fabulous.
The farmers wife explained she had been serving people in her garden for over 33 years. She was an excellent cook.
