Lots of dust and heat at the 32nd Annual National Chuckwagon Races in Clinton Arkansas yesterday. But lots of fun too.

Davies Chuckwagon, a New England classic in the Wild West.
Every bit as good inside as out. Metro Denver.
A friend ran this chuckwagon through a filter and i love how it turned out. Feeling devilish today :) It may only be Hump Day for you poor city slickers, but everyday is like the weekend for me :P
These Chuckwagon drivers ride a fine line between life & death everytime they choose to compete in a race. It's an addiction to the adrenaline rush. Most guys live to tell the tale and others ascend into heaven doing what they love.
I've been in a chuckwagon twice and this is what it feels like from the wagon. There is a lot of communication between the driver and his horses through reins and words.

In this video he is talking to his lead horses Crystal and Jake.
The horn has blown and their off causing the ground to tremble with one goal in mind to steal the rail, outrun, and ultimately win: chasing the dream of adrenaline.
Grant-Khors National Historic Site
When fur trapper and trading post manager Johnnie Grant transitioned to ranching and started pasturing cattle in the DeerLodge Valley of Montana in 1857, trail drives were essential to cattle ranching. The cattle had to be brought in, usually from Texas, moved from pasture to pasture with the seasons and taken to market, often back to a railhead. When Grant sold his ranch in 1866 to German born Conrad Khors, The ranch’s operations spread over about 10 million acres of open range not only in Western Montana but in eastern Montana, Wyoming Idaho, Colorado and Canada. Transient cowboys and trail drives were a major component of that operation.
Essential to a trail drive and to cowboys minding cattle on the open range was the chuckwagon and the cook who was the key to a contented trail crew. The cook was typically an older man and a former cowboy. Paid $50 a month, he drove the chuckwagon carrying the crew's food, equipment, and blankets to the next campsite. He pitched camp, prepared three meals, tended his wagon and mules, and provided medical assistance to injured crew. He was assisted by the horse wrangler, who was in charge of the horse herd, or remuda. Frequently the youngest, he earned about $25 a month.

Besides his obvious farmer's tan and his great smile. It was his scar that really caught my eye. This sweet guy who i met at the races was very reluctant and shy about having his pic taken. But i managed to lay my charm on him and he was like putty in my hands. Today he is grateful he survived despite loosing his giblets to the trampling hooves of a chuckwagon team. They had to remove his spleen and he almost died.
Or you'll miss out on the magic!! Looking back at 2014....but still moving full steam ahead!! I do love being where the action is.... so I thought I'd start the year off right!
A male Least Bittern flies low and fast across Horsepen Bayou en route to his nestlings, waiting for their next meal. The young look to be about two weeks old, out of the nest but not yet fledged, and about a month earlier than last year's hatch. Whichever young bird reaches papa first will poke at his gullet until the adult bird regurgitates his catch of baitfish deep into the young one's mouth. So a more fitting title might be "Upchuck Wagon."
Early morning on the prairie near Shaunavon Saskatchewan. The rising sun peaks through the remnants of an old chuckwagon.
This old Chuck Wagon was used during the pioneers moving west. This depicts the struggle the pioneers faced in the arid high plains desert of Utah.
A defunct roadside eatery with a wild west flair. Internet research acknowledges it's existence. But also states it's permanently closed. Which is evident.
I'm told It's a privilege to grow old and still be doing what you love. I'll be riding until my very last breath (in more ways than one) :))
An easy 2 mile one way hike brings you to this large sandstone arch in the Sedona area. Given its easy access it is a popular spot for visitors. But it wasn't overly crowded the day we were there and everyone took turns walking out for the obligatory pictures of standing on the bridge (which we did as well).
I managed to grab the empty image in between groups.
