i'm hearing the romper room theme song and seeing mr. doo bee and miss francis and hoping they call my name from the magic mirror. road blocks never felt so good.
Synesthesia is a non-pathological variation of human perception. Synesthetic people automatically and involuntarily experience the activation of an additional sensory or cognitive pathway in response to specific stimuli. For example, they can see a color when they hear a musical note, or perceive touch on their right cheek when they taste food. These perceptions are idiosyncratic, that is, each person perceives colors/smells/sounds and physical sensations, etc. specific and different.
Auditory-visual synesthesia (also known as chromesthesia): The phenomenon through which the sense of sight and hearing, music and colors are interconnected. Far from each song leading to a mental image of a single color, each musical note is associated with a particular key.
I feel like that...
Synesthesia on people:
This type of synesthesia consists of the involuntary association of one or more colors with familiar people. It can be a perception of color without more, or the colors can have texture, shape, three-dimensionality, spatial location and even rhythm or movement.
“In the right light, at the right time, everything is extraordinary.” – Aaron Rose
The brilliant Australian conductor Simone Young once said that she has the condition whereby she can "see" musical notes as colours. This should not be surprising. Sound and light both come to us in waves. And wavelength (frequency) determines the pitch and colour of each. This condition is known as Chromesthesia.
Each of the seven notes on a musical scale can be represented by seven colours, and then we simply move up an octave.

Drawing inspiration from the captivating 2025 Cliburn Competition official artwork, Chromesthesia, by contemporary artist DAAS, Kate McLeod Studio's floral mannequin exuded the same vibrancy and dynamism. Adorned in a resplendent ball gown that mirrors the artwork’s bold color palette, this display embodied the essence of musicality and artistic expression, with colorful blooms cascading from the piano.

Martin stayed in the house on Oliver Road for the next five years. He wrote
numerous papers on various forms of synaesthesia, such as grapheme
synaesthesia, in which letters and numbers appear to some people to have
colours; and chromesthesia, in which music and other noises can produce
the effect of waves, spots or even fireworks; and lexical-gustatory
synaesthesia, in which words have distinctive tastes, like honey, or rust, or
green.
However, he kept his most advanced research to himself – his
continuation of the work that had been started by Vincent Grayling. He
hated Vincent Grayling with a dark, bitter rage that would never diminish as
long as he lived, but his records and notebooks were the only way in which
he could back up something of what had been taken away from him.
He was writing up the results of his latest acoustic experiment when there
was a tapping at his study door.
‘What is it?’ he asked.
A blonde-haired girl of five years old came into the room, wearing a pink
knitted sweater and red OshKosh dungarees. Her hair was tied up with two
red ribbons.
‘Dadd-ee,’ she said coyly, ‘can we go out to the park, and have a slide on
my sledge?’
Martin pushed his chair back and the little girl climbed on to his knee.
‘Not today, sweetheart,’ he told her. ‘The roads are real icy, and we don’t
want history repeating itself.’
‘What does that mean?’
Martin shook his head. ‘You really don’t want to know, believe me.’
At that moment, a voice called from downstairs, ‘Sylvia? Are you
bothering Daddy again?’
‘No, Mommy!’ the little girl called back. Then she turned to Martin and
said, ‘I’m not bothering you, am I, Daddy?’
‘No, of course you’re not. Not at all.’
She frowned at him seriously and touched his left cheek with her
fingertip.
‘If I’m not bothering you, then why are you crying?’

My love!
I worried you, oh my!
Your tired eyes revealed dejection, ...
Forgive me please,
I know that you have changed.
You live with an intelligent,
Good husband;
You don"t need all this fuss and all this pledge,
And you don"t need me either, such a hazard.
Live as you do
Lead by your lucky star
Under the tent of fern, if there"s any.
My best regards,
You"re always on my mind, you are,
Yours, faithfully,
S e r g e y Y e s e n i n.

“Maxine, baby, did you catch that? The machine we’re going to steal is out to get us.”
“So what?” said Maxine.
“That’s the attitude,” I replied. “Anything it can do, you can do better. Sixty-four hundred pounds! Huh!”
“You knew I was under the bed and turned on, but you did it anyway!”
“Did what?”
“You made love to that—that woman… Right above me! I heard everything!”
“Well… Yes.”
“Have you no respect for me?”
“Of course I do. But that was something between two people, that—”
“And all I am is the thing you feed the facts to, is that it? The thing that plans your crimes! I mean nothing to you as an individual!”
“That’s not true, Max baby. You know it. I only brought that woman up here to find out what Seekfax was up to. What I did was necessary, to obtain the data I needed.”
“Don’t lie to me, Daniel Bracken! I know what you are. You’re a heel!”
“Don’t be that way, Maxie! You know it’s not so! Didn’t I just buy you a nice new alligator case?”
“Hah! You got off cheap, considering all I’ve done for you!”
“Don’t, Max…”
“Maybe it’s time you got yourself another computer.”
“I need you, baby. You’re the only one who can take on the 5000 and beat it.”
“Fat chance!”
“What’ll I do now?”
“Go get drunk.”
“What good’ll that do?”
“You seem to think it’s the answer to everything. Men are beasts!”
I poured myself a drink and lit a cigarette. I should never have given Maxine that throaty voice. It did something to her, to me——I gulped it and poured another.
==========
It was three days before Maxine came around. She woke me up in the morning, singing “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” then announced, “Good morning, Danny. I’ve decided to forgive you.”
“Thanks. Why the change of heart?”
“Men are weak. I’ve recomputed things and decided you couldn’t help it. It was mainly that woman’s fault.”
“Oh, I see——”
“… And I’ve planned the next crime, to perfection.”
“Great. Let me in on it?”
Maxine was only a machine——
Still—she was the most sophisticated machine in the world, complete with random circuits which permitted emotion analogues.
“Who’s jealous? I know computers, and I don’t see how you can tell anything that way.”
“There is a point, Danny, where science ends and art begins. This is that point. Leave it to me.”
“All right. I’ll probably regret it, but that’s the way we’ll do it.”
“And don’t worry, Danny. I can compute anything.”
==========
I looked ahead and knew I couldn’t make the curve. I slammed on the brakes and they started to scream. I began to burn rubber, but I wasn’t slowing enough. “You bitch. You betrayed me!” I yelled.
“You know it, Danny! And you’ve had it, you heel. You can’t even slow enough to jump!”

One-hundred Tone Poems completed over the course of several months. The original intent of this project was to create only twenty, to include with the first twenty copies sold of the Chromesthesia Chronicles CD - a creative collaboration between ambient guitarist Tristan Welch (@tristanwelchmusic) and I, completed in 2019. Due to COVID-19, the CD production plant we were going to use closed down temporarily, delaying the release of the album. I decided to use the borrowed time to make more, with the goal in mind to paint 100, each one to be included with each CD, that would be released in a limited run of only 100. I actually made 102, since a couple were given away as gifts to a couple of friends. Anyhow, the only way to get one of these mini-paintings is by purchasing the Chromesthesia Chronicles CD from Tristan Welch, which also includes a booklet of photos of the artwork that Tristan responded to with his music, or that I painted in response to Tristan’s music. The music itself is both intimate and expansive, true audio art that transcends words. My hope is that the artwork captures at least some of the spirit of Tristan’s music, in this audio and visual collaborative effort.
It turned out to be a beautiful day for art and music at 868 Estate Vineyards! This afternoon was the closing event for my Visual Music exhibit, and I was joined by Tristan Welch on ambient guitar, while doing a painting demo. I’m extremely thankful for Tristan driving all the way out west today, to join us, as much of the work in the show was the result of a recent collaboration between the two of us that will eventually be released as an album (stay tuned!). I’m also so grateful to Andrea Cybyk and Nancy Deliso for giving me the exhibit and allowing my work to grace the walls of 868. It has been an extremely positive experience that is ending with some recent exciting news that 21 of 26 pieces in the show were sold! It still hasn’t quite sunk in, I think. I also need to thank my always incredible wife Kris, who is always there for me, who documented today’s as well as yesterday’s event, and who keeps me going when I need it the most. Finally, I can’t forget to thank everyone who came out to support me from near and far, and even via social media - as I will always say, it is never taken for granted. ❤️ #art #music #868estatevineyards #creativecollaboration #ambientmusic #abstractart #chromesthesia #artistsoninstagram #dmvartists #loudouncountyartist #abstractpainting #contemporaryart
