This is an original commission oil painting by fine artist Christopher Clark. This commissioned oil painting was based on the post apocalyptic zombie video game The Last of Us. Because myself and my client live in Denver, we decided to set the scene on 16th Street Mall - there’s the iconic Lannie’s Clocktower in the distance. It also ties in hints of the sequel, The Last of Us Part II, because we have a much older Ellie sitting on the bed playing guitar, and in the foreground you can see Joel’s hand holding the gun. On his wrist, you can see the broken watch his daughter gave him all those years ago, which he still wears. Swarming on the streets, right up to the ledge of broken building, are all sorts of infected, including the clicker right in the foreground.

Other fun easter eggs: behind Ellie you can see a poster for the Life is Strange game, and the photograph of her and Riley. On the bed is the Naughty Dog publisher logo, the paw print. On the building behind Ellie is written one of the Fireflies’ messages, “Look for the Light”. In a window about that are the letters T1, which was the code name for this game while it was being developed. In a window above that, you can see the silhouette of a few lurking infected. Across the street is a Firefly banner. There’s a storefront for “South Philly Cheese Steaks”, because the client who commissioned this painting is the owner of said restaurant (though their location is actually in Golden, not Denver).

This is an original Harry Potter oil painting by Christopher Clark, fine artist. Being a traditional landscape painter, I really wanted to paint this scene as an excuse to do a lovely landscape - it just happens to have tons of Harry Potter elements in it. It’s Hagrid’s warm and inviting hut, set against the Forbidden Forest on the grounds of Hogwarts. You’ll see Hagrid sitting on his front step, playing his flute, with Fang at his side. Looking around the painting, you’ll also see Aragog, the Centaurs, Hagrid’s motorcycle with the sidecar, Buckbeak, and the flying Ford Anglia peeking out of the forest. I used the path coming out of the foreground to invite you into the painting, as if you were strolling from Hogwarts to go visit Hagrid for a giant bucket-sized mug of tea by his cozy fire, or perhaps to be led on another adventure in the Forbidden Forest.

Title: Alice, Through the Looking Glass

This is an original oil painting based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. I was commissioned to paint this Alice painting inspired by the video game Alice Madness Returns, and also inspired by a mirror image of Heather Theurer’s fantastic painting “We’re All Mad Here”. This painting can be rotated 180 degrees and seen from both sides, emphasizing the notion that “up is down and down is up”.

Points of interest in this painting:

We see the darker, goth version of Alice, blood-spattered, holding the Vorpal Blade in one hand, and the character Bitch Baby in the other. Behind her is the red velvet chair with eyes instead of buttons, and topped with plenty of creepy doll heads, as are prevalent in the game. Instead of legs, the chair has tentacles, one of which is wrapping around Alice’s leg.

In the distance behind Alice, instead of the rabbit hole, we see the vortex into oblivion, symbolizing the destruction of Wonderland as well as her mind. Swirling into the vortex is the apocalyptic train that is actually the city of Victorian-era London.

Floating around Alice are the Eat Me cake, the Drink Me bottle, and the clockwork bomb used in the game. We see just the feet of the darker, creepier white rabbit as we jumps behind the chair. Several playing cards are strewn about, each with the number or letter written backward, since it’s like we’re looking in a mirror. Some of the cards feature the Executioner, the Hobby Horse, and the Queen of Hearts, who in the game turns out to be Alice’s younger sister Lizzy.

Turn the painting over, and we see the Mad Hatter, March Hare, and Doormouse from the game. Instead of pouring from a teapot, the March Hare is pouring from en Eyepot, one of the game’s enemies, and pouring into a creepy doll head tea mug. Behind them is the Hatter’s Domain, and spread before them is the Cheshire Cat’s carnivorous grin.

In each corner of the painting, there’s a heart, almost like it were a playing card. These hearts are the veinous, bloody things Alice must stomp on in the Queen’s castle.

Finally, the whole painting was splattered with blood (well, red paint, but you know, “blood”) to add to the general mayhem.

Quite a dark and sinister version of Alice in Wonderland, and by far the darkest painting I’ve ever done, but since this was a commission and I consider myself an artist for hire, I made it happen. The client was, to say the least, completely thrilled.

Title: Game of Thrones - King’s Landing

This is an original oil painting inspired by Game of Thrones, by Christopher Clark, fine artist. King’s Landing is the capital of the Seven Kingdoms, full of beauty and danger, riches and squalor. I quite enjoyed painting this piece, mainly because it reminded me of the myriad Italian landscape paintings I’ve done in the past. I guess it helps that this city is based on a real place in Croatia, so that’s kinda fun. Note, I’ve also included the Red Comet, or the Red Messenger, that appears over the skies of Westeros.

Everyone’s dream is to arrive on the hidden Platform 3/4 to see the steaming scarlet Hogwarts Express waiting to carry them to their first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. In this painting, we actually witness Harry Potter’s first arrival as well, with Hedwig and his school trunk. We also see the Weasley family sending Ron off to his first year, and a little farther back is Hermione Granger, clutching a book as her only comfort as she journeys away from her Muggle parents into the wizarding world for the first time.
