Kantha for the Bengali folks means embroidered qulit. Kantha is said to be 'Dorukha' meaning turning the worn out and old textiles and fabrics to things of beauty. It is the way the stitch is used, in different arrangements, that forms the complex vocabulary of Kantha.

A Kantha is often referred to as a rural woman's diary as it reflects the rural woman's personal account of her life's events and happenings.

Kantha embroidery has led to socio-economic empowerment of thousands of women of Birbhum. Department of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises & Textiles (MSME&T), Goverment of West Bengal in partnership with UNESCO, is developing a Rural Craft Hub at Nanoor.

Simple run stitches at the hands of skill artists create a magical artwork called as 'Kantha Embroidery'. Kantha making is a 'women's art'. It was the bengali housewife who helped the art to evolve.

The origin of the Kantha craft traces its history to a period not less than a thousand years. since then the tradition has come a long way today when the artistic brilliance of the women artists have found expressions in lifestyle products like saree, dress materials, bed and cushion covers etc. Motifs of nature including animals, birds and flowers are extensively stitched and the art work varies from intricate and heavy to light and simple designs.

There is a large concentration of the women doing Kantha embrodiery in Nanoor block of Birbhum, West Bengal. Around 2000 women of this area are engaged in doing katha embrodiery on different products. About 600 kantha artists are included in the Rural Craft Hub.

Al-Hayaat wa'Al-Mawt (Life and Death):

Two overlooked concepts of existence. The power of one repels the other. Despite this, one cannot exist without the other. There is no life (of the Dunyah) without each Soul eventually tasting Death, and there can be no Death if there is no Life to begin with. The design idea was inspired by the concept of Yin and Yang. How opposites co-exist to create a balance in all matters. In this case, Life and Death is a means of dealing with and assessing the affairs of the Heart. The gift of Life brings about peace and contentment in one’s heart, while witnessing Death awakens the heart and rids it from the ignorance it becomes engulfed in. Two different capabilities of Allah, nonetheless the consequence it has on those who truly Believe, is the same: resulting in the Remembrance, Fear and Gratitude to Him and Only Him alone. The words “Life” and “Death” are written on aerosol cans are to represent creation and destruction, both of which can be carried out with this particular tool of Art. The word “Hayaat” (Life) has been written in black scripture, to represent darkness, as Life can be a journey in the shadows for those who have no faith within them, and the word Death is written in white, to symbolise light, how Death can be a means of salvation for those with deep faith, for those who are eagerly waiting to depart from this Dunyah and to the unimaginable beauties of the next life.

Ranjit Chowdhury hade god fiskelycka under abborreutflykten. Två fina gösar narrade hans vobbler, varav den ena vägde hela 4.1kg vilket är en ovanligt bra storlek i Stora Värtan numera. Grattis Ranjit!

Dessutom lyckades sällskapet i Hasse Bälthes båt fånga några fina abborrar...inte ovanligt när Hasse kör skutan.

the small artists of kumartuli has been highlighted in the snaps.. many of them have not got the proper education and this is the only way to survive; beside this it has also become a traditional way to establish as an artist of kumartuli after getting the proper lessons regarding the clay-modelling and Idol building.
