CHAU MASK - INTRODUCTION

Chau dance an acrobatic martial danc e form of Purulia. It has been already enlisted in the UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Huminity.Chau is indegenous part of Eastern India. It originated as a martial art and contains vigorous movements and leaps. The barren land Purulia with its tribal inhabitants and multilayered influences of vedic literature, Hinduism and Martial Folk-lore have all combined to shape the PURULIA CHAU DANCE which has only one message - The triumph of good over evil.

The Purulia Chau dancers wear large stylized masks while performing chau dance. The Chau Mask is traditionally associated with this age old dance form of Purulia, where the performers wear masks of different mythological characters and also different animals.

The masks are made from paper pulp, mud and clay. First the outline shape on the mud is created. then the ultimate shape of the muddy layer is given with the wooden structure. After drying that under the sun it is covered with the white ash dust layer before the pulp paper layering with the glue. It helps to remain separated after drying of the paper laye under the sun. The Hard paper layer with a thin mud layer on it is painted in attractive shades with the acrylic colours usually brought from the Barabazar area of Kolkata. The masks are of different shapes and sizes starting from small to large one.

At present the Mask Making Industry is not only bounded in the traditional old mask making culture for the chau dance artist. The mask making artist are now being skilled of making various size and shape masks for Ineterior Decoration. Some artist are also making masks with modern painting styles.

THE STARTING OF CHAU MASK VILLAGE

Around 150 years ago during the rule of King Madan Mohan Singh Deo of Bagmundi the tradition of making chau masks started in the CHARIDA village of Purulia. Presently there are around 300 traditional Artists in the village known as "SUTRADHAR" community.

Prof. A.Q.M. Badruddoza Chowdhury(born November 1, 1932 in Bikrampur, Dhaka, now Munshiganj District. Bangladesh, was the nations fifteenth president. His father Kafiluddin Chowdhury was a political leader of Awami League and served as Minister in provincial cabinet of the then East Pakistan. Prof. Chowdhury is a renowned professor of Medicine as well. He entered into politics as the Secretary General of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) during its early years with Ziaur Rahman as its Chairman. He entered into Parliament after winning general election in 1979 from Bikrampur. He also served as cabinet minister in BNP government during 1979-1982. When the Bangladesh Nationalist Party won parliamentary elections in 1991, after a short stint as Education Minister he was appointed Deputy Leader of the House, of Bangladesh national parliament. In 2001, Chowdhury became foreign minister of Bangladesh. Shortly afterward, in November 2001, he became the President of Bangladesh. His reach to peak of political success was over after less than a year, however. He resigned as president due to pressure from party leaders on June 21, 2002, for allegedly disrespecting the party's founder, Ziaur Rahman, by not visiting his grave the previous month, on the anniversary of his death. Subsequently, Dr. Chowdhury along with his son Mahi B. Chowdhury started a new political party titled Bikolpo Dhara, Bangladesh (Alternate Path). The BNP-Jamat led government has allegedly continued to harass Dr. Chowdhury and his party. There have been newspaper reports of riot police and armed BNP supporters disrupting his party's and have opened tax-evasion investigations against a BNP MP who defected to the Bikilpo Dhara Bangladesh. On Saturday, April 30 a mysterious fire in his home burned a many of his possessions. The fire brigade then stated that the reason for the fire was unknown. But most likely it was an attempt to kill him or to create fear.

On 26 October, 2006 Dr. Chowdhury, in collaboration with Oli Ahmed formed a new party named LDP (Liberal Democratic Party) composed of ex BNP leaders. His new party joined with 14 party alliance led by Awami League and boycotted scheduled election on January 22, 2007.

Ravi Shankar (Bengali: রবি শংকর; born Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury, 7 April 1920 – 11 December 2012[2]), often referred to by the title Pandit, was an Indian musician and composer who played the plucked-string instrument known as the sitar. He has been described as the best known contemporary Indian musician.[3]

Shankar was born in GhazipurVaranasi and spent his youth touring Europe and India with the dance group of his brother Uday Shankar. He gave up dancing in 1938 to study sitar playing under court musician Allauddin Khan. After finishing his studies in 1944, Shankar worked as a composer, creating the music for the Apu Trilogy by Satyajit Ray, and was music director of All India Radio, New Delhi, from 1949 to 1956.

In 1956, he began to tour Europe and the America playing Indian classical music and increased its popularity there in the 1960s through teaching, performance, and his association with violinist Yehudi Menuhin and rock artist George Harrison of The Beatles. Shankar engaged Western music by writing concerti for sitar and orchestra and toured the world in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1986 to 1992 he served as a nominated member of the upper chamber of the Parliament of India. Shankar was awarded India's highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1999, and received three Grammy Awards. He continued to perform in the 2000s, often with his daughter, Anoushka.
