The International Symposium on Compound Semiconductors (ISCS) has awarded its 2016 Young Scientist Award to Srabanti Chowdhury, an associate professor in UC Davis Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE). Among the department’s newest faculty members, Chowdhury previously held an assistant professor position at Arizona State University’s School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering.

Chowdhury earned her master’s degree (2008) and doctorate (2010) in electrical engineering at UC Santa Barbara. As part of her PhD work, she developed gallium nitride (GaN)-based vertical devices for power conversion, and demonstrated the first vertical GaN high voltage power-switching device — a current aperture vertical electron transistor (CAVET) — with a record-high breakdown electric field. In 2015 she received a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, an Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) Young Investigator Program (YIP) Award, and a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Young Faculty Award. Another one of her projects involves collaboration with PowerAmerica, a U.S. Department of Energy organization based at North Carolina State University with the goal of enhanced energy efficiency by making wide bandgap (WBG) semiconductor technologies cost-competitive with the currently used silicon-based power electronics.

Description :

Landscape comprises the visible features of an area of land, including the physical elements of landforms such as (ice-capped) mountains, hills, water bodies such as rivers, lakes, ponds and the sea, living elements of land cover including indigenous vegetation, human elements including different forms of land use, buildings and structures, and transitory elements such as lighting and weather conditions.

Combining both their physical origins and the cultural overlay of human presence, often created over millennia, landscapes reflect the living synthesis of people and place vital to local and national identity. Landscapes, their character and quality, help define the self-image of a region, its sense of place that differentiates it from other regions. It is the dynamic backdrop to people’s lives.

The Earth has a vast range of landscapes including the icy landscapes of polar regions, mountainous landscapes, vast arid desert landscapes, islands and coastal landscapes, densely forested or wooded landscapes including past boreal forests and tropical rainforests, and agricultural landscapes of temperate and tropical regions

b>PREFACE

"SHADHINOTA is My Cause for the 40th Celebration of BANGLADESH Independence. The land, the mighty rivers and the natural beauty makes Bangladesh a land of unparalleled splendor and magnificence. Bangladesh was liberated after a prolonged war of Independence the declaration of which was given on 26th MARCH 1971. One of the worst genocides Genocide in history took place at the behest of an autocratic regime in the name of Political stability spearheaded by the then Pakistan President Yah ya Khan. After 9 months of Liberation water and the sacrifice of 3 million lives Victory came. In addition to the loss of lives countless others were rendered homeless, the infrastructure including roads and bridges and factories lay in ruins. The people of Bangladesh have shown time and again how resilient they are. After each and every disaster, natural or man-made the people have again stood up and started all over again from scratch.

My Effort here is to pay tribute to the valiant sons of the soil and the ‘die hard’ attitude of a people who can still smile in the face of adversity however great it may be. I plan to make a collage of images that represent the lives of the people of Bangladesh. I encourage you to upload a photo each day till I have a total of 40 images for the Cause SHADHINOTA in the group Frame BANGLADESH"

Description :

Bangladesh, a land of cultural festivals, always celebrates each and every colorful distinctiveness of the nature. Each of the seasons has its own way of representing the nature here in Bangladesh. The spring (Bashanta) is celebrated in colorful programs all over the country. One such festival is the Kite Flying festival, which is a common phenomenon all over the world, celebrated in different names. Kite flying festival in Asia has the oldest history which gathers people from different religions and classes to celebrate nature’s liveliness after the harshness of winter. In spring, the sky remains clear and also the gentle bridge helps to fly the kite quite nicely than any other time of the year.

Kite flying, an oldest traditional festivities dating back to Mughal Era, gathers a huge crowd at different places of the country. The most colorful and enthusiastic festival is held at Old Dhaka. People of Shakharipatti, Tatibazar, Lokkhibazar of the city celebrates the day with lots of courage and enthusiasm. Thousands of kites cover the sky of the city with colorful drapes. People of the mentioned places prepare delicious foods to entertain the guests. People of all ages go to the roof of their residential place to fly kites starting from the midday. Thousands of people including young ladies can be seen on the roofs depicting a fine composition of the festival. Some people also arrange musical system on the roof, which plays popular tracks loudly giving the festival a rhythmic backbone.

Most attractive part of the festival takes place when the sun set begins. Some people put characin into their mouth and blows fire with that liquid. Though the task is quite dangerous, it brings an illuminating effect all around the place.

The kite flying festival is usually held from January to February. It really welcomes the spring in a vivacious way.

What are you studying?

We work on the neuromuscular junction.

What is that?

By the time you are mature, every single muscle fiber in your body is innervated by a single neuron. The neuromuscular junction is the location where that neuron activates the muscle to contract. We study the creation of, the stabilization of, and the wound recovery of that junction.

Meaning that if you stimulated that spot, that one muscle fiber would contract?

Yep. Not only that, you would end up propagating that single contraction across the entire muscle, because not only does the nerve talk to the individual muscle fiber, that muscle fiber's motion influences the rest of the muscle.

Artist: Mahbuba Chowdhury

Summer Trees

Acrylic on canvas; 16 x 20 in.

Age: 13

Grade: 8

Teacher: Helen Serrano

School: P.S./M.S. 194, Bronx

Artist: My art teacher has taught me a lot. Her words and techniques didn’t just teach me something new, but helped me to continue to improve.

Finding the right shade for the trees and making the leaves and branches were challenging. I met these challenges by mixing different paints until I found the right color, limiting the number of leaves, and using a thinner brush to add more branches. I believe there’s always a way to fix a work of art and make it better.

Teacher: Eighth-grade students in our Art Enrichment class were charged with creating a landscape painting that incorporated the painting techniques used by the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists of the late nineteenth century. Students looked at the works of Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, and Cézanne. They were given demonstrations of painting techniques, the proper use of acrylic paint, and the use of a variety of brush types. This lesson reflects the Grade 8 benchmark; students used close observation and sustained investigation as they developed individual perspectives on art, solved compositional problems, and explored perspective, scale, and point of view.

Mahbuba has always shown a great interest in painting. She is eager to learn new techniques and readily takes advice on ways to improve her work. I enjoyed watching her work and making discoveries as her painting came to life. While she worked, she also gave her classmates advice on how to solve color-mixing problems and on painting techniques. I admire her enthusiasm as an artist and her willingness to share the knowledge she has acquired.

Kantha for the Bengali folks means embroidered qulit. Kantha is said to be 'Dorukha' meaning turning the worn out and old textiles and fabrics to things of beauty. It is the way the stitch is used, in different arrangements, that forms the complex vocabulary of Kantha.

A Kantha is often referred to as a rural woman's diary as it reflects the rural woman's personal account of her life's events and happenings.

Kantha embroidery has led to socio-economic empowerment of thousands of women of Birbhum. Department of Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises & Textiles (MSME&T), Goverment of West Bengal in partnership with UNESCO, is developing a Rural Craft Hub at Nanoor.

Simple run stitches at the hands of skill artists create a magical artwork called as 'Kantha Embroidery'. Kantha making is a 'women's art'. It was the bengali housewife who helped the art to evolve.

The origin of the Kantha craft traces its history to a period not less than a thousand years. since then the tradition has come a long way today when the artistic brilliance of the women artists have found expressions in lifestyle products like saree, dress materials, bed and cushion covers etc. Motifs of nature including animals, birds and flowers are extensively stitched and the art work varies from intricate and heavy to light and simple designs.

There is a large concentration of the women doing Kantha embrodiery in Nanoor block of Birbhum, West Bengal. Around 2000 women of this area are engaged in doing katha embrodiery on different products. About 600 kantha artists are included in the Rural Craft Hub.
