1951 Mercury custom showing the fantastic Packard tail lights. chopped top, continental kit, fender skirts, lake pipes, white pearl paint and so much more.
Sometimes a photographic opportunity finds you instead of you seeking it out...on this day, across the street from where I was doing an inspection for work, in the old portion of Downtown Cookeville, sat this amazing old Ford Truck with some serious Rat Rod vibes!! No fenders, straight side pipes, chopped top, and a fair amount of rust...all the right ingredients for an amazing ride!!

I never tire of seeing this chopped, full-fendered 1934 Ford Coupe. I have seen this car and known the owner for several decades. It has always been in dark gray primer and it is so appropriate on this car, which looks like it just drove in from 1956. The engine is a three-deuce 59-AB Ford Flathead V8.
1930 Ford Model A Coupe.
Although seeing this car may have you thinking about John Milners hot rod from the movie American Graffiti, his car was a 1932 Ford 5 window coupe and yes they were both yellow.

If you aren't going for a really special (read "expensive" paint job and you don't want the rat rod look, this is an excellent choice. I think it is a satin look primer. I've seen this look in both red and black and I really love either. Jim did an excellent job chopping the top of this '50's Chevy and has it very tastefully appointed with no excess bling. Super truck!

The "James Dean" license plate says just about all there is to say except for the fact that the car is yellow - much to my pleasure. What a beauty!
I have to wonder how many of these cars remain in original condition and are not chopped.

This show always attracts some great cars like this one, but they have to pack them in pretty closely together, so it's tough to get the best shot. This one had enough space between it and the next one, but had a big sign blocking the front view, was back lit and had tons of reflection. One day I'm going to figure out how to avoid or remove all the reflections from these very shiny cars. Perhaps a polarizer is the answer?

I'm not sure what is going on here. The front end looks like a 1937 Ford automobile. Perhaps that was wedded with a different vintage Ford pickup truck or maybe it's a kit of some sort.

I don't seem to see too many true custom cars at shows these days. This beauty is an exception. The top has been chopped with some radical changes made to the rear roof line. The lake pipes are beautifully incased. It has fender skirts, hood louvers and Frenched headlights along with several other well done touches.
I had seen it a few weeks before, but didn't get a decent shot because the hood was up. This time I met the owner and he graciously lowered the hood and told me a bit about the car. He says it is a real pleasure to drive given that it has had several suspension upgrades, but the thing I had missed when I glanced at the flathead motor was that it is blown. To find a car this cool that still has a flathead motor is one thing, but I didn't even know they made blowers for them. Way cool old school move. Now if I could just get it out somewhere where I could get some really good clean shots of it that would do it justice.

I posted this shot 4 years ago with a sort of hasty edit. I felt it needed a re-hash with more effort this time around. Most of you know I'm not usually enthusiastic about customized cars like this but even though the finished product may not be my cup of tea, I can recognize and salute quality craftsmanship.
