I was very pleasantly surprised with a rainbow on my morning bike ride.

This is an image that I focused stacked (within the camera) and It didn't come out too bad at all. There are some things I don't like about it but for the first time I'm not disappointed at all.

A cholla cactus back-lit by the setting sun in the high desert east of the Sierra range in California.

Do NOT mess with these guys! They are dangerous and they will bite you.

Close up of the Cholla Cactus as the Joshua Tree National Park in California

One good thing about photographing Cholla cacti is the glow they create when the sun strikes the spines just right. There are two types of Cholla in this scene, the Teddy Bear Cholla and Buckhorn Cholla. The two cacti in the foreground in the lower right are Teddy Bear Cholla then right behind them, there are Buckhorn Cholla.

These beautiful plans are amazing to see in person but one has to be super careful when walking near them. I shot this at sunset hoping to get the sunbeams lighting up the plant. This was my second time to this area of Joshua Tree National Park and I come to love it more each time I visit.

Cylindropuntia is a genus of cacti, containing species commonly known as chollas, native to northern Mexico and the Southwestern United States. They are known for their barbed spines that tenaciously attach to skin, fur, and clothing. Stands of cholla are called cholla gardens.

Tucson Mountains. This one was watching over her nest which is in the middle of this cactus and well-protected with cholla spines. Not sure how they avoid getting poked.

in all its magenta glory!

A stroll thorugh the Sonoran Desert can be most interesting. Note that the focus is right on… but some densely spiked cacti can seem blurred, and cholla… well, they are just plain fuzzy flora !

Yellow fruit of a cactus known as the cane cholla, walking stick cholla, or the chainlink cactus.

.

At the start of the Hoodoo Trail we got a bit sidetracked by a cool clump of cholla. The fruit was bright yellow suggesting that it hadn't been long since the flowers had set.

Looking west, southwest so it's possible the mesa in the background is part of Bernalillito Mesa.

Happy Donnerstagsmonochrom!

Driving thru the Organ Pipe National Monument in Southern Arizona, we ran across a lot of Cholla cactus. Here I had perfect back-lighting that illuminated the barbs. You have to be careful with this cactus as the thorns seem to have a homing device to attack you if you get close!

The Cholla Cactus Garden at Joshua Tree NP. I was pleasantly blown away by little spot in the desert. All of the chollas literally glow against the backdrop. It’s something that you really need to see in person to truly appreciate, but I did my best to capture a small glimpse of it using my iPhone panorama feature 😊

As the weather gets colder, the chollas or stick cacti turn from a basic green into tints of pink and red, as if they were trying to show their Christmas spirit.

A beautifully backlit cholla cactus, late afternoon in the foothills of the Sandia Mountains near Albuquerque, New Mexico. This is one of the older photos I never got around to processing. I did post a similar view many years ago, but I didn't really like it and deleted it. I like this one so much better.

Even though shot before sunrise in order to capture the colorful sky the backlit cholla cacti light up.

Extremely Spiny Cactus, Especially the one nickname The Jumpin Cholla. Get one in your skin and it may require pliers to pull the spines out.

Go ahead I dare you to pick a flower
