Not that I was there for any of that today but rather to suss out the elegant viaduct running right across the centre of town and which once pounded to the bark of a Castle and throbbed to the tune of a Western.
Sadly those days have long gone and while decent motive power this far west is now almost non-existent, at least the 2-car DMU did fit nicely into the gap between tree and road-sign. The train is FGW's 05.24 Bristol Temple Meads - Penzance (2C42) in the form of a Sprinter class 150. Perhaps not the service of choice for anyone making the full journey though - at just 8 minutes under 5 hours you'd certainly need your holiday by the time you arrived in Penzance.

Today my chiropractor attacked my dragon's head, and it hurt like bloody murder. He was reaching under the knot, and I felt like I was going to start sweating from the pain. Afterward, he put on this stuff called kinesio tape, which, as I understand it, separates your skin from your muscle, increasing bloodflow, and breaking up any tissue fusion. I swear, only a few hours later, what once was a shrieking pain has quieted to a dull moan.
I have been down on myself for getting behind editing my novel, and today I stumbled across a twitter mention of a lesbian writer's group in town. So on a whim, I went. It's very varied in age - probably 18 - 80 year olds. But I'm glad to have a peer group in some fashion.
I do want to say thank you to everyone with the outpouring of concern and support for me these past few days.
Lately I have felt agitated every time someone says "how are you" - people ask that but they never want to hear the truth. They're asking, really, to reassure themselves that they don't have to be concerned, and they can go back to their self absorption. Every time I get that question I feel such a burden to lie for someone else's comfort.
Today, someone asked me how I am, someone who I know actually wanted the real, true, honest, ugly answer.
And you know what? Faced with the opportunity to lay it all out and say how terribly fucked up I am? I realized that the honest answer is....I'm actually okay.
I'm stressed and exhausted and sad and overwhelmed. But really, I'm okay.

Brandt Lee Turner was a former chiropractor in Moline, IL.
Brandt's chiropractic license #38004736 was suspended by the State of Illinois on January 13, 1989, on matters related to filing of insurance claims.
Prior to his death Brandt was living in the Minneapolis area, working at Macy's. On or about April 9, 2016 Brandt fell and hit his head, leading to a brain hemorrhage and died. I am told that surviving family did not want an obituary published. Contact information on Brandt's phone and computer was locked and inaccessible so many of his friends could not be notified of his death.

I paid a surprise visit to Sacramento last weekend to fetch bins and boxes of tapes from my cassette-sitters and reunite them with my records back home in Olympia, and I found the sign here at 5850 Stockton Blvd had changed to reveal something I never knew about the history of the building. For about the last decade or more, this sign was mostly covered by painted plywood and said CHIROPRACTOR on the bottom panel. I never knew a Harvey's Hamburgers existed here. Even the chiropractic office was a looong time ago. The last business that plied any kinda trade here was a radio station which broadcast in Hmong until about ten years ago. I remember that the building got a fresh coat of paint about four years ago, and that a bunch of boxes were in flux in the southmost room. Someone was frequently rousting people away from sleeping or resting in the alcoves for a while, but then... nothing happened for months, and the boxes disappeared. This change to the signage is the first noticeable change here since then.
Does anyone have a remembrance of Harvey's Hamburgers? Please share if you do!
[Update: I just learned that Harvey's Hamburgers is mentioned in the book Lost Restaurants of Sacramento & Their Recipes by Maryellen and Keith Burns. It had multiple locations originating on Broadway near Riverside across the street from Edmonds Field, the baseball stadium that once stood where Target is today. This location apparently pre-dated the McDonald's a short distance to the north on Fruitridge Road just east of Stockton Blvd. That McDonald's was built in 1954. So, it might've been a long while that this sign first became a ghost before being cloaked in the chiropractor's plywood.]
Dinosaurs Need Chiropractors Too (4118):
These concrete dinosaurs were the beginning of a miniature golf course in the Mojave Desert. Begun in the early '70s by Lonnie Coffman with the help of Air Force serviceman Gregory Wicker, the project was abandoned. But the concrete dinosaurs remain. My friend Dave Dasinger and I came here on a warm summer night.
I illuminated the dinosaurs with a hand-held ProtoMachines LED flashlight, working slightly quicker than usual to keep the sky dark to create extra contrast between that and the dinos. All color light work was done while the camera shutter was open, and is not a post-processing creation. You are encouraged to "share" on FB if you are wish. Thanks!

I had a crap day that involved more serious neck pain and an emergency trip to the chiropractor, I was given the finger by a jerk in a Porsche who pulled out in front of me, and then I burnt dinner which left a smoking smiley face on my burner. Hoping the world doesn't hate me as much tomorrow.

Pancake had her first chiropractic adjustment today while Mom had her weekly visit. This was a surprise although I've been wanting to get her some holistic help for a long time (over what I can do myself). She's had her tail caught in train doors, hit by lightning, attacked by a swarm of bees twice, charged by police dogs and other therapy /service dogs, thrown out of numerous retail establishments, hotels and restaurants, etc., so life as a civilian service dog is not always easy in some areas of the country. This is not a needle - she got something called an Impulse IQ Adjustment, and this morning she was out running around and back to her old self. This particular chiropractor has a very good feel (and knowledge) for how a body works --unbeknownst to us he also treats horses, llamas as well as other animals.
