The effects of a Chinook wind drive the clouds up over the horizon. Their position reflects in the water below.
I have not been out to capture too many sunsets as of late. We certainly have our fare share with one every night. Instead it has been an equal challenge to find interesting subjects and work on their form, shape, and other elements that contribute to a subjects interest. However, we have been experiencing the Chinook winds off the Rocky Mountains as of late. These warm, dry winds push clouds up and create a distinctive arch across the day time sky. Chinook winds are unique to mountain slopes and other than southern Alberta, occur in Argentina and the Swiss Alps.
With this in mind, the evening light will have clouds and an opportunity to catch that same warm light. As a bonus, the clouds tend to catch the light in various and unique patterns as well. Therefore the chance to capture a different look is provided and a subject is needed. This time, our reservoir gives an anchor with the mountains peaking through in the distance.

I posted the previous photo, thinking that would be my daily photo. And then the sun set and the sky exploded into every shade of pink, orange, red and purple you could imagine. Not the greatest composition, but the sky makes up for it, I think!

Usually you see one, or maybe two. We saw four yesterday and the majestic twin rotor helicopters sounded amazing.
Calgary is lucky to have Chinooks in the winter. They give us a short break from the gruelling cold that we experience for many months of the year, and they usually come along with an amazing sunrise or sunset.

November is the month for spectacular sunsets in Alberta!
I should add this is one photo that would have benefited from a gradient ND filter. Which I don't happen to possess at the moment. I did use a gradient filter in post-processing, but the area below the cloud is still a bit blown out. Hopefully it still has merit and deserves a look or two....

S&C regular No. 66723 'Chinook' passes Birkett Common, working 6C00 Clitheroe - Carlisle north. Although there are still several shots I have not yet done of this working, Birkett is one of my favorite's, and I wanted to have another go in mid-April while the grasses still have some of the brown tones left over from winter.
