MMy daughter and her husband took me to “Lanterns in the Garden” at the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens. More than 20 sets of lanterns crafted from silk, wire, and steel were spread out across the gardens. Rarely staged outside of China, lantern festivals are a central part of Chinese culture and date back thousands of years. Not something you would expected to experience in Texas. One of my favorite groups of lanterns were the colorful horses.

The highly anticipated Chinese Lantern Festival which made its Canadian debut at the PNE in mid December features everything from 200-feet illuminated lanterns to festival foods, to a marketplace and to children’s activities. Visitors will be treated to colourful sights that showcase pandas, a Chinese pagoda [made of plates, cups, spoons etc], a gigantic dragon etc.
Chinese lanterns are culturally significant in China; lantern festivals started during the Han Dynasty, which was about 2,000 years ago. For centuries, lanterns festivals have been lit on the fifteenth day of the first month in the Chinese calendar to pray for a good harvest, and to gain favor of Taiyi, god of heaven.
