Some spots of sun today, but the mood was set by the dark clouds overhead. The chilliest day so far.

When I woke up this morning, it was so chilly and windy. I took this spectacular sunrise at Fort Reno. It was the chilliest so far this month at 21F. Winter officially starts not until 21st of December 2008.

August is usually our chilliest, windiest and most unenjoyable month.

But not this year.

Pleasant temps, and enough occasional rain has kept everything looking green and gold this Winter ..

Any colour goes with black and white, right?

That's what a friend said to me years ago regarding her stylish fashion choices ;)

For 12MonthsforDogs group August project :

"Lotsa Colour"

sooc..

Oops, correction… the theme this month is "Make it colourful".

Besides Pips here in a colourful setting, she has in deed made my life colourful with her affection, cuteness and easy nature.

Happiness too, provides many colours to the mind, I think...

-54°F (-48°C) this morning, our chilliest so far this winter.

What a brilliant weekend!

Finally, after what has seemed one of the chilliest starts to a year, it's finally warmed up. Spent Sunday afternoon visiting Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal near Ripon in North Yorkshire.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the present-day ruins are described as the largest and best preserved ruined Cistercian monastery in England.

Fountains Abbey was founded in 1132 and was in operation for more than 400 years before Henry VIII ordered the Dissolution of the Monasteries.

Each full moon in the month has a name and 'cold moon' is given to the first, and normally only, full moon in December – because it coincides with some of the chilliest, frostiest nights of the year.

This December's full moon is also a supermoon, a 'cold supermoon'.

In 2025, we've had a rare occurrence in that the last three full moons of the year are all supermoons - the Hunter Moon, the Beaver Moon and the Cold Moon.

A true winter scene, this photo is definitely the chilliest from this year's winter collection. As each snowflake falls in an unmatchable silence, the ground is blanketed more and more. The pristine white flakes are almost numbing at the touch, but signify something of beauty, something of wonder and finally, something of winter.

Here's to the nights where the sand is your seat,

the waves kiss your feet, your friends outnumber the stars in the sky,

and even the chilliest of nights, are still warmer

than the cold one in your hand.

Mountain shot near Baker Creek Chalets in Banff National Park, AB. As with the images in this series it was quite chilly out at -24--30 C. These early morning captures were the chilliest. The area around here is lovely, I was glad to see we had lots of snow around to take these amazing pictures.

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm

That could abash the little bird

That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chilliest land

And on the strangest sea;

Yet, never, in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.

Through the glaciers

Location: Barela, Doesai, Skardu, Pakistan

In my whole trip, I spent most time in Deosai. And there is no surprise in it. Barela (the huge land pictured above) was the chilliest in my trip. And it was the highest point of my trip too perhaps. Thanks to the layers I was wearing, the place was very cold.

To my left is a sub glacier and I wish I had binoculars to track leopard’s foot marks or that of Markhor’s. The silence was loud and the air was wild natural fresh. The landscapes were mesmerizing and the sun was bright but helplessly cold.

Great Geoffrey Chaucer (ca. 1343-1400) especially liked what he knew as Dame's or Lady's Eye calling it the Empress of Flowers (www.flickr.com/photos/87453322@N00/8444022109/in/photolis...). And the Latin specific 'perennis' refers to Lawn Daisy's constant flowering throughout the year, even in the darkest, chilliest and wettest of Seasons such as this Christmas. Here it is naturally bejeweled in Our Lawn.

I'm too psyched about this photo to wait until tomorrow to upload it. I'm thinking of doing a whole "rooftop" series, whatcha think?

Anyways, got this beautiful ballerina from Bea Douglas. The sky is from my own stock and that's its real color that evening (and the airplane is really in the shot)!

Give love and view large? Please and thank you!

:)

P.S. watermark signature also made more translucent as suggested by ms holmes and watersapphire. Thank you for the input! :)

The number 3 in explore is huge for me.haha. Thanks everyone sooo much! Wouldn't have happened without your love :)

Today was the start of one of the chilliest parts of the year. The clouds to the west of me at my Long Island home were thick and dark from the horizon up to about 25° above, while the temperature was going to be soon approaching 25°F. I saw that the clouds to the east looked more interesting. I had been wanting to do a photo shoot at Bellport dock for a while, since I had not been there in months. So, I drove on there and got there before sunset, which, sadly, happens before 4:30PM these days. But, despite the weather being so cold that my hands and face were freezing, I was able to do a fun livestream of the dusk colors. I also did some 360° photos and videos. But, having made sure to bring my now 9 years old Nikon D300, I was able to capture this scene which I worked on at home to present this magical moment, with a shock of cloud covers, and a huge flock of seagulls, swarming the sky and the dock, respectively. When a police boat arrived and docked, I said hi to the police officer but we could both barely talk because our faces and tongues were that cold we could barely talk and sounded like babies talking. He had been out to Morcihes Inlet and saw a total of two boats all day. I told him how I used to keep my boats in the water until mid-December before I had taken them to Florida many years ago. Good old days then, and stunning cold new days, and hot young nights ahead.............

Wet, foggy, cold Sunday morning in Eastville Park, Bristol during the chilliest start to December for many years.

BPS Projected Image 2/2/11 R3

The Netherlands was still in the grip of winter last weekend, with up to 10cm of drifting snow in southern parts and skating on natural ice in the north.

The wind chill factor meant it felt as cold as -16 Celsius in Groningen, despite the sunny spells.

Sunday failed to be the coldest March 24 on record by just 0.1 Celsius. The current record of 2.9 Celsius at the De Bilt weather station dates from 1916. Saturday was the chilliest March 23 since that year.

Here's to the nights where the sand is your seat, the waves kiss your feet, your friends outnumber the stars, and even the chilliest of nights, are still warmer than the cold one in your hand.

(Part VI of a poem called Life)

Today, 12 March 2010, I am 62. I hope to stick around until at least 63... because I'm terribly OCD for odd numbers... LOL

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend :))

After visiting one of the chilliest skate shops in austin, I had a chance to take some pictures. The people here are really cool and laid back. It has such a relaxing atmosphere and an awesome, blinding view of the sunset!

Coming into the park from the Northeast entrance one morning - probably the chilliest and was struck by the low laying fog hanging over the valley.

Mountain shot near Baker Creek Chalets in Banff National Park, AB. As with the images in this series it was quite chilly out at -24--30 C. These early morning captures were the chilliest. The area around here is lovely, I was glad to see we had lots of snow around to take these amazing pictures.

Jutting out into blue waters - rather cold at this time of the year to swim in - of the Strait of Korea on a peninsula is Seongsan Ilchulbong, The so-called Sunrise Peak of Fortress Mountain. The path up is well-trodden by countless walkers and hikers, and very well maintained; in fact, it's paved all the way to the crater rim at about 180 metres height. The crater floor is about 90 metres down, and is a wonderful 'pasture-like' green, dotted with a variety of wildflowers (among which the Korean Thistle). Very different I would hazard from the red inferno of 100,000 years ago during its explosion. It's all a wonderful sight to behold. Many people - like your photographer - climb during the day. But the thing to do apparently is to come up here very early in the morning to view the Sunrise. The Sunlight here is the very first to illuminate Jeju-do from the East...

As high as we are here... the famous haenyeo have one on their diving sites at the foot of this crater. They are the women-divers of this island. A matriarchal society, they numbered until quite recently 40 or 50 thousand, but today about 4500 remain. Their ancient expertise is oysterfishing deep under water, octopus spearing, and collection of delicious seaweeds. A bit to the west we could see a group of these intrepid divers every morning from our hotel balcony even in the chilliest of seas.

The prettiest photo days are often the windiest and chilliest here in the Daytona area. You can see the chop on the water of this pic. I can't remember when it was taken, (look at info, Chris....OK, October....) but I'd be willing to bet that it was sometime between Fall and very early Spring, when a cold snap came through. Yes, it DOES get cold in Florida!

When I was seventeen, I went to New York to visit my father for Christmas. When I left Daytona, I had a coat on, and it was 42 degrees. When I arrived in New York, it was 42 degrees there, also. My half sister, June, asked me where I got the coat! People seem to think it's always tropical paradise down here. That time, it actually felt colder here than in NY, simply because of wind chill and humidity.

This year we had a few cold snaps, but mostly it was a hot Winter. Spring has been even hotter, with temps as high as 90 degrees. Now we go into that hot and hazy looking sky we're so used to! cool and windy is looking good to me now!

This winter has been one of the coldest, snowiest, wind-chilliest ones I can remember on the Canadian prairies. In honor of this long cold winter, I was inspired to create an abstract artwork using ice and snow.

One of the most amazing inspirational sources was the patterns of window frost that built up on the garage window. I took several photos of these amazing patterns. At first I didn't even know how I would use these photo. I expected to just use them as enhancement textures. But then I thought... "Why not use them as the main subject layer!".

After looking at each photo, I saw something in one area of the frost pattern. The patterns looked like a prehistoric forest made of large ferns. And in this same areas I could see the face / head of a dragon or dinosaur. It was even attached to an arch of frost with frost spines that looked like its back. So I worked to blend this into a scenery of a large beast lumbering through an ancient misty forest.

It needed depth and background to the work. So, in keeping with the inspired theme to keep the art based on winter cold, I used two other layers of fallen snow textures I also took a couple years ago. I also added a lower front later of more window frost to add more depth. Using layer masking, sharpening, darkening, and blending filters, I ended up with this.

As you look at this ALL FROST & SNOW textured artwork, stare deep into the work and image being in this forest with this great lumbering beast.

CREDITS & PERMISSION:

All the blending texture layers used in this artwork are from my own library of window frost and snow textures.

.....in Fairbanks via the AN-225.....Damn she's big!

Story by dermotcole

02.08.10 - 05:59 pm

The giant Russian plane due to land at Fairbanks International Airport Tuesday morning is the only one its kind flying today. It was designed to carry the Russian version of the space shuttle. While that program was canceled, the AN-225 has carried loads that don't fit in any other aircraft.

The plane is expected to land at about 10 a.m. and depart at midnight, bound for Haiti, by way of Miami. It is flying from Tokyo, the state Department of Transportation said, with 250,000 pounds of earthquake relief equipment.

This is what Popular Mechanics said about the plane in a 2003 article:

There is nothing on Earth or in the air quite like the Antonov An-225. Dwarfing a Boeing 747 and out-lifting a U.S. Air Force C-5A Galaxy, it can haul an expeditionary force into combat, or carry enough food to avert a famine. Yet, oddly, the original purpose of the An-225 was neither hostile nor humanitarian. Conceived in the chilliest years of the Cold War, the plane was designed as an airborne tow truck for the now-defunct Soviet space shuttle program. Despite its lack of armaments, NATO war planners gave the An-225 a military code name, Cossack. History would reveal that the Soviet nickname for the An-225, Mriya, which is Ukrainian for "dream," was more apt.

In keeping with the Soviet penchant for building the world's biggest everything, the An-225 was designed to carry twice as much as a Boeing 747 freighter. The dimensions of the An-225 are staggering--nearly a football field from nose to tail and wingtip to wingtip. With a maximum takeoff weight of about 1.32 million pounds, it is 50 percent heavier than a fully loaded C-5A. To get so massive an aircraft into the sky, Ukrainian engineers equipped the An-225 with six ZMKB Progress Lotarev D-18T turbofan jets, each capable of pumping out 51,590 pounds of thrust.

On probably one of the chilliest nights I've experienced, I was able to get a good set of star trails. Kept toasty in my make-shift camp though!

Today was Lahore's chilliest Lahori morning with full of its famous fog.

Picture is taken this morning but looks like centuries old. My cam produces

huge noise levels and I thought to utilize its noise for this effect.

My city is one of a traveller's must see city. Its famous for many things.

Its city of food, city of historical buildings, city of culture, city of

gardens, city of colleges etc. One of the few cities where canal passes

through heart of city. Weather is its speciality as well. We face

temperature ranging from 50 C to almost 0 temperature during whole year.

Every weather comes here with its full strenghts. Ohh I am just remembering

those hottest days and I am making sure its winter now :) Yes, Emaad its

winter believe it. With all these specialities it's a photographer's

paradise.

Personally, I call these (dec-march) as photogenic months. So everyone is

invited.

"Back next Spring"

Now half-way through December,

Chilliest day since last February,

We are told. My mind heavy, slow,

Seeking oxygen, led me outdoors,

Over brittle, frost-chilled snow

To my woodland thinking stool.

Too cold to sit, I thought to pass,

When this little note from Nature,

Wafted down in last night's wind,

Tucked in tightly under the wire,

Beckoned my eye, stirred my mind.

Its message, "Back next Spring."

--JW, Dec. 15, 2009

Did you ever have one of those weeks (months...years....) when it seemed like there was a dark cloud hanging over your house? I feel like that lately.

I could use some prayers, folks. This morning I went to blow dry my hair and the outlet blew...started smoking! I shut off the power and I didn't feel heat or smell anything burning after a minute, and opened the cover to see if I saw any damage. It seemed o.k. After spending hundreds on my kitty, Tigger, to diagnose his cancer put him down, and have him cremated, I have nothing left to fix electrical problems. Of more concern to me is that my two other cats, Squeegee and Barrymore are at home alone if anything was to flare up! Please pray for protection over my home, AND my pets! Too much tough stuff lately. I have no homeowner's insurance, so if something were to happen, I would have no place to go, either. Looks like the nearly 50 year old wiring is needing to be replaced, and I can't do it. It's one of the chilliest days this year and I'm sitting at work with a damp head! I've had about as much as I can take for one week. Please pray....

Right now the power is off to half my house, since I wanted to make sure there was nothing that could spark. My brother, Shawn, will be running by a couple of times during the day just to make sure nothing has started up, since I've heard it's possible for an electrical fire to spread in the wall without you knowing it for a bit. Except for a roof over my head, the house means nothing to me, but I DO care about my pets.

I took this pic the morning I put Tigger down- Christmas Eve Day. It was a beautiful morning, and I didn't see the proverbial "dark cloud" overhead, although there were lots of dense ones. It seems the dark cloud is over MY head for the last few years. I'm about done with it.

Blue hour at Sutro Baths. Never noticed that oddly (heart?) shaped hole in the rock before. Normally this is one of the chilliest places in SF, but the air was unusually still last weekend. You could see haze over the water and smell the Ocean Beach bonfires.

17-40 @ 40mm, f/5.6, 40s, ISO 400.

After several days of trekking on open landscapes we arrived at a very deep and narrow valley in a place with no name hidden under a lush forest with a raving canyon just below our feet - a real highland jungle! It just begged to be explored under the full Moon despite being one of the chilliest nights of our journey since sunlight almost never reaches this deep into the valley to heat it up.

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm

That could abash the little bird

That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chilliest land,

And on the strangest sea;

Yet, never, in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm

A good friend of mine Karen saw this photo, and thought of this poem by Emily Dickinson. I think it's fitting.

"'Hope' Is The Thing With Feathers"

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

I mean I dunno how close i am but i think birds flying is a beautiful thing and this bird soaring across the sky is the hope i think also the bird on top of alcatraz is kind of the same thing. I also imagine you know when you hear a bird sing starting in the spring after a long winter that brings hope for a better time.

Hope is the thing with feathers

That perches in the soul,

And sings the tune without the words,

And never stops at all,

And sweetest in the gale is heard;

And sore must be the storm

That could abash the little bird

That kept so many warm.

I've heard it in the chilliest land

And on the strangest sea;

Yet, never, in extremity,

It asked a crumb of me.

Cold toes, but warm souls. This beauty will make even the chilliest Valentine's Days better.

I am back from vacation! Chilliest week in decades for the Caribbean, but still very nice and better than the sub zero temperatures in Kansas City last week. This is my first try at a watercolor tutorial created by one of my contacts www.flickr.com/photos/pike77/. Check out his work, its amazing! I am going to need lots and lots of practice on this! I have a hard time giving up the photographic detail!
