The greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions and not on our circumstances. We carry the seeds of the one or the other about with us in our minds wherever we go.

Martha Washington

La plus grande partie de notre bonheur ou de notre misère dépend de nos dispositions et non de nos circonstances. Nous portons les graines de l'un ou de l'autre avec nous dans nos esprits partout où nous allons.

Children playing having fun

Another impression of the secluded cove in South Devon we had for ourselves last Saturday. The rugged and rocky shoreline was really fascinating and we spend a lot of time simply scrambling around exploring the cove with its many caves and rock formations. Nice things we found: lots of nice seashells and snailshells, an incredible amount of colourful beachglass (green as well as blue and yellow glass), some large crabs and many caves entering the cliff face.

I placed our eldest next to one of the standing rocks for a sense of scale.

The darker reagions on the rock tell you where the water level would be at high tide.

An Ernesto 'Che' Guevara portrait in front of a house in the Old Havana.

Born to a middle class family and trained as a medical doctor, the young Argentinean travelled and witnessed the plight of the South American people, and had envisioned a fair and justice society. He joined the rebel groups in Cuba and fought along side with Fidel Castro and other revolutionists. After the revolution, he held positions in important ministries and the Central Bank, in charge of the industry and economic reform. Despite his passion, however, the result was largely a failure due to the lack of experience. Withdrawing from public office, he returned to Africa and South America for guerilla warfare, but was subsequently captured and executed by the CIA in Bolivia in 1967. Coupled with his personal charisma, Che Guevara has become an icon who dare to confront injustice and oppressions, no matter how powerful they are, without considering personal safety and profit. Although Che might never have envisioned the social condition of Cuba today under his comrade Castro, although the end result undoubtedly adds an element of tragedy to his sacrifice and devotion, it is his passion that inspires generations of young Marxists and left-wingers. Like Che once said: "Revolutions rarely, if ever, emerge fully ripe, and not all their details are scientifically foreseen. They are products of passion, of improvisation by human beings in their struggle for social change, and are never perfect. Our revolution was no exception".

The trains in Dhaka, Bangladesh are crazy. They get extremely crowded and many people opt to travel on the roof like the kids in this photos.

Istanbul: little girl feeding her grandmother

When this little turkish girl jokingly fed her grandmother in an Istanbul café she was very well aware of being photographed. In fact we had fooled around before with me taking shots and then show her on the monitor. She loved the game and started to laugh and pose. I don't speak Turkish - she was the director as well as the model.

This photo was shown at the Istanbul Photo Contest Exhibition at Taksim Metro Station September, 2012 :))

India, Ladakh, Himalaya (1978)

She will have children of her own by now.

(was on Explore Sept. 29, 2008, No 273)

From all my analog photos this is the one dearest to me. And it has its little story, too. We were amongst the first foreigners ever to visit Ladakh after India's independece. I would go out and play with the children in the fields and take photos. She was the youngest one and very shy. Covered her face with her dirty hands every time i tried. Then finally i surprised her in one inattentive moment. This is not that shot but the one after. When she started to laugh about having finally lost our game.

The Children of the World Monument is a monument on the North Cape Plateau in Norway.

It is located southeast of the North Cape Hall and consists of seven large circular reliefs arranged upright in a semicircle. Opposite them is a sculptural group of mother and child, consisting of a female figure and a small boy who points to the reliefs with his left arm. The group was created by Eva Rybakken.

The monument was erected in 1989. The templates for the seven reliefs were made in June 1988 by seven children from different nations who came together here for a week. The children were Jasmin from Tanzania, Rafael from Brazil, Ayumi from Japan, Sithidej from Thailand, Gloria from Italy, Anton from the Soviet Union and Louise from the USA. An eighth relief explains the history of the monument in Norwegian and English.

The monument is intended to represent friendship, cooperation, hope and joy, across all borders. Once a year, the Barn av jorden prize is awarded locally for commitment to sick and needy children.
