Shahadat's mother worries about how his disability will affect him when he grows up. She hopes he will be able to go to school. Children with disabilities are often the most marginalized within society in general and in education systems in particular.
UNICEF advocates quality basic education for all, with an emphasis on eliminating disparities of all kinds.

Children are being trafficked across the borders for hard labour (factories, fishing industry, etc.), end up as prostitutes in brothels or bars of foreign tourist towns and young girls are forcibly married off (in particular to China).
Within Myanmar, children are also lured from mostly rural areas to urban locations by brokers promising them a brighter future and employment opportunities, only to find themselves trapped in the hands of exploiters.

A nine year old boy from a monastic school takes Jackie’s and UNICEF’s Janine Kendal’s hands as they walk in the monastery compound in Mandalay. Mr. Chan visited a vocational training centre for trafficked children who have managed to return home but are in need of special care and support. He also travelled to UNICEF-supported projects assisting children at risk of being trafficked, including those without parental care and children who are living and working on the street.
Human trafficking is pervasive in the region. Trafficking of women and children is particularly prevalent in the Greater Mekong Subregion (Cambodia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, Viet Nam and the southern provinces of China) where borders are easily crossed and economic disparities are great.

Young people who survived being trafficking share their stories with Jackie. Youths such as 12-year-old “Zaw” who was trafficked to Malaysia at 12 to work as a beggar and “Mimi” who was sold by traffickers twice when she was 10, and again aged 17.
In East and Southeast Asia the trafficking industry is fueled by demand for cheap or exploitable labour, commercials sex with children, adoption outside legal channels, and forcing women or girls into exploitative marriages.

“It is very important that young people know how to protect themselves,” said Mr. Chan. “Simple things, like knowing not to trust anyone who promises you a dream job in another country; never going to an unknown place alone; knowing your parents’ and your own full name and age; and being able to explain where you live, help children guard against traffickers.”

According to the ILO, human trafficking is the second most profitable criminal industry in the world, reaping profits of $32 billion a year in 2005. The true number of victims is impossible to document, since most people who are trafficked are forced into illegal commerce such as prostitution, or enslaved behind closed doors as domestic servants.

Children with single or multiple forms of physical, mental, intellectual, or sensory impariments can become disabled if attitudinal and environmental barriers deny their human rights, hinder access to basic services and foreclose equal participation.
The realities of disability are alarming in all parts of the world. Legislation, policies and attitudes that fail to recognise the legal capacity of children with disabilities are factors that aggravate their discrimination and exclusion of society and increase their vulnerability to violence, abuse and exploitation.

Trafficking arises from many factors. Demand creates the market for trafficked children. The lack of respect for children’s rights (including the low status of girls), inadequate legislation and poor law enforcement enable the trade in children. Poverty, unemployment, desire for a better life, lack of education, family problems, domestic violence, abuse, neglect and emergency situations increases children’s vulnerability to being trafficked.

One day Sabira, the girl sitting at the back, stopped coming to school. She had turned twelve, and was being married. It was a big ceremony attended by special guests. Oddly, the person she married was her grandmother. The following day in yet another ceremony, her grandmother divorced her. Now that she was divorced, she was to be considered spoiled as well. A man paid 10,000 Taka to spend first few nights with her.
Sabira has turned fourteen now. She looks older, probably because of the steroids she was given to make her body develop faster. She also has a six-month-old child, and anyone can sleep with her for as little as 20 Taka (about 30 US cents).

Protecting trafficked children requires timely victim identification, placing them in safe environment, providing them with social services, health care, psychosocial support, and reintegration with family and community, if it is proven to be in their best interest. UNICEF assists by supporting training of professionals working with children including social workers, health workers, police and border officials to effectively deal with trafficking. Additionally, UNICEF supports governments in setting standards in dealing with child trafficking such as developing and training responsible personnel on child friendly interviewing techniques.

Trafficking often affects the most vulnerable. Girls, ethnic minorities, indigenous groups, migrants, stateless persons and refugees often are targeted by traffickers.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Jackie Chan visits a UNICEF-supported community centre run by its partner Ratana Metta, There he met children who are living on the street, working or are affected by HIV.
To reduce vulnerabilities that make children susceptible to trafficking, UNICEF assists governments in strengthening laws, policies and services including legislative review and reforms, establishing minimum labour standards, and supporting access to education. UNICEF also works with communities to change norms and practices that exacerbate children’s vulnerabilities to trafficking.
