Avebury Stone Circle, Wiltshire, UK
Well finally the rain has ceased for a few days and no work meetings! As I have a short trip coming up I decided not to trek off too far and with the forecast of widespread freezing fog and hoarfrost I thought I'd try Avebury Stone Circle as had never shot it in foggy conditions.
Th above shot was taken towards the end of my visit as the sun was burning off the fog. I was just experimenting with some different compositions. This is a 3 shot bracketed photo and, unusually for me, I chose a square crop as there was little foreground interest beyond frozen grass and no clouds in the sky.
Avebury henge and stone circles are one of the greatest marvels of prehistoric Britain. Built and much altered during the Neolithic period, roughly between 2850 BC and 2200 BC, the henge survives as a huge circular bank and ditch, encircling an area that includes part of Avebury village. Within the henge is the largest stone circle in Britain - originally of about 100 stones - which in turn encloses two smaller stone circles. Anyone interested in knowing more can look here www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/avebury/
The alternating wet and cold weather creates lots of work for my team as potholes break out like chickenpox spots but I'll take cold and dry over warm and wet any day. Surely only in England can we go from drought to ground water flooding in 6 months?!!
Hope everyone has been having a great weekend.

Just like there are different types of related viruses that cause smallpox, chickenpox, and monkeypox, different coronaviruses cause different diseases in people. The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) coronavirus causes SARS and the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) coronavirus causes MERS. The novel coronavirus responsible for the current pandemic, SARS-CoV-2, is one of seven types of known human coronaviruses. SARS-CoV-2, like the MERS and SARS coronaviruses, likely evolved from a virus previously found in animals. The remaining known coronaviruses cause a significant percentage of colds in adults and children, and these are not a serious threat for otherwise healthy adults.
Neem (Azadirachta indica) is a tree in the mahogany family. In India, the tree is variously known as "Divine Tree," "Heal All," "Nature's Drugstore," "Village Pharmacy" and "Panacea for all diseases."
* All parts of the tree (seeds, leaves, flowers and bark) are used for preparing many different medical preparations.
* Neem oil is used for preparing cosmetics (soap, shampoo, balms and creams), and is useful for skin care such as acne treatment, and keeping skin elasticity.
* Besides its use in traditional Indian medicine the neem tree is of great importance for its anti-desertification properties and possibly as a good carbon dioxide sink.
* Practictioners of traditional Indian medicine recommend that patients suffering from chicken pox sleep on neem leaves.
* Neem gum is used as a bulking agent and for the preparation of special purpose food (those for diabetics).
* Aqueous extracts of neem leaves have demonstrated significant antidiabetic potential.
* Traditionally, teeth cleaning was conducted by the chewing of slender neem branches. Neem twiggs are still collected and sold in markets for this use, and one often sees youngsters in the streets chewing on neem twiggs.

Common sense!
I'm fully vaccinated and boosted. No, I don't know "what's in it".
Neither this vaccine nor the ones I had as a child. Nor do I know
what's in the 11 secret herbs and spices at KFC. I also don't know
exactly what's in Ibuprofen or any other painkiller-- they just treat
my headaches & my pains. I don't know what's in tattoo ink, botox and
fillers, or every ingredient in my soap, shampoo or deodorants. I
don’t know the long term effect of mobile phone use, or whether or not
that restaurant I just ate at REALLY used clean foods and washed their
hands.
There's a lot of things I don't know.
I do know one thing: life is short. Very short. And, I personally
still want to do things. I want to travel and hug people without fear
and, I want to return to and enjoy the feeling of life "before Covid".
Throughout my life I've been vaccinated against many diseases:
Measles, mumps, rubella, polio, chickenpox, hepatitis, influenza,
tetanus. We trusted the science, and never had to suffer through or
transmit any of those said diseases.
I'm vaccinated. Not because I’m a sheep or to please the government.
Not to make other people do it.
But, I don't want to:
* die from Covid-19
* take up a hospital bed if I get sick - Amen!
* not be able to hug my loved ones
* not be able to travel & enjoy events
* live my life in fear
Can't say it any clearer. I'm vaccinated for me and I wear a mask for you!
Thank You
Paul Mageau

like making sure that the new cat sitter has everything covered. My neighbour of 25 years, who always looked after our cats, moved last year and so we now have a professional sitter coming in. If you remember Pixie made friends straight away (see comment below). She went through all the paperwork when she visited and made exact notes about each one, but I thought I would go a little extra as our four can be quite complicated when feeding. For one thing they all tend to like different combinations of cat food and they are fed at different spots around the house. So I came up with this little scheme. Four boxes with a laminated photo of each cat on top of their own special box, already filled with their food. I have then provided feeding 'station' directions, so hopefully the new sitter will find it easier.
We are off to my sister's tonight (poor Paige has chickenpox) and then on to Wales to visit Phill's family over the Easter weekend. See you in a few days time

In the New Forest at Bolton's Bench there is a horse trough donated by residents in 1902. Whilst I was there the other day, this group of Shetland Ponies suddenly decided to charge towards it, quite a sight but maybe dangerous if small children were stood in their way. My grandchild liked the 'spotty' horse, thought he/she must have chicken pox!

A walk Jackie wanted to do since 1989 - unfortunately she contracted chickenpox and wasn't well enough to accompany Dennis and others on the walk.
Violet crept into our room at some point this morning [3?] and i didn't have the heart to turf her out. But then she did her spinning trick and managed to orientate herself horizontally - feet in k's back and head next to mine, snoring. So, I got up. I went back later to take this sneaky shot. K had moved but V was still taking up all the bed.
Keep my Mom in mind today and keep optimistic! Her infectious smile and laugh that makes everyone happy. For a month, she has been in isolation and tested positive two weeks ago, and is making it through the COVID-19, age 93 at the epicenter (Life Care Center of Kirkland) in the US, and she will be 94 when it is over. When asked how she was feeling, she said, better than I was! She has made it through the great depression, tuberculosis quarantine, measles, mumps, chickenpox, and so many more episodes of flu than we can imagine. She has the faith and hope of a mustard seed and loves the Lord, Jesus Christ. With these factors, she is a perfect example that we must fight to flatten the line, keep self quarantined and keep smiling. Stay inside, please.
So many lives taken in this world from the virus. I am sorry to all who have lost someone they love.
This, too, shall pass! And we will be a better world for it.
Love to everyone!
16h seven-state drive complete, woohoo! and it is still twice as warm in NY as it was in MN. jacket and mittens? no, thank you!
it was, good people of flickr, horrifically tiring. we listened to all 6 discs of some book on CD about this murder mystery in virginia, a woman who used to work at the city post office and her three pets who always come to the rescue. basically, the only thing keeping me awake was my need to point out plot-holes, repetitive character information, unnecessary character information and sub-par dialogue. waving your arms in frustration while driving 70mph does wonders for the levels of oxygen in your system.
wanted to do a diptych as it's been a while, but almost didn't because there was some nice negative space by my head. these frost crystals are also most of what i saw of any snow. there was close to NOTHING the whole way. seven states, completely dry. there was apparently a mini-blizard in new york saturday afternoon, but we missed that by a day.
i shared aqua libra's idea with my mother of starting her own 365. she laughed when i hinted i'd trick her into it. she shouldn't underestimate me. or fall asleep before i do and when my camera battery is at full charge :3

Nope, never had 'em as a child. It took 43 years for me to get 'em. Wheeeee! Been wonderin' what the heck was wrong with me. Fever for the past few days, chills, body aches. And all of a sudden blammo- red itchy welts everywhere. Going to the doc tomorrow... This is gonna be a blast...

Here are the last two images of this spectacular flight of this young Red-tailed Hawk. A forgetting on my part in the file ... I would be remiss if I did not conclude this series by informing you of valuable information that an excellent friend and photographer emeritus Christian Fritschi well known for his great generosity and volunteer in conservation and protection of birds of prey at Quebec UQROP organisation. When he saw my images of this consulted an expert on the source of this annoyance to the feet of this Juvenile Hawk and here is the textual answer he had from an expert in the field.
This would be quite the classic appearance of a disease, the bird pox. A bit like chickenpox in humans. It is not necessarily fatal, but the bird can be very inconvenient ...
I will restrict myself to giving the name of the veterinarian of the University of Montreal who made the comment here mentioned because I do not have permission to use his name, but I can assure you that he is very proficient.
hadn't been shooting since the chickenpox...last two weeks
hopefully i could go out to shoot soon

For the 52 in 2017 group. week#7 "Birds"
Shots taken on February 15th 2017
A familiar sight seen from my front room ... the birds congregating on the power lines as the day begins. Sometimes just a few, sometimes the wires are packed!
We never thought much about the local wild birds when we moved here over 20 years ago - we'd always had a cat, so wanted to keep them away for their own safety (she was a formidable huntress!)
But the terrible winter of 2010 changed all that. We had the worst winter on record - temperatures of -25c and lasting for 3 months. So much of the animal and bird life perished that winter, and we watched as the birds died in our garden, and we couldn't help. Since then we have fed the local wild birds every winter, and into nesting times too. I think it has taken this long to recover the numbers, though the dawn chorus is never as loud as it was before.
So the feeders in the garden provide us with our own Nature Channel - as we see tiny Coal Tits, finches and robins, whole flocks or tree sparrows and starlings, a few thrushes, blackbirds, magpies, red-legged partridges and pheasants. Even the occasional wood-pecker and sparrow-hawk.
The crows have established rookeries in the trees on the far hillside, pictured here.
My apologies for not commenting, or posting regularly at the moment. Shingles has me in its grip. Two weeks of no sleep, just dozing as my skin feels like it has been scalded. I'm told it can take several weeks, maybe months before the pain fades. Nothing to do but take the pain meds and hope that things will improve! I'll post the odd shot .... but commenting is still beyond my grasp! If you have had chickenpox as a child, then you could be vulnerable to Shingles - you don't 'catch' Shingles, apparently it is a recurrence of the chickenpox virus. There is a vaccine available ... check it out!

Thanks for all the well wishes. Still stuck at home recovering from chickenpox. Much better now thanks but I still look like a leftover from the Halloween party.
Been shooting yesterday (in my bathroom) with this rig that Cory Lum so kindly gave me. It's an old Polariod camera back with 2 bellow sections, used to take screenshots of Tektronix oscilloscopes. More photos in comments.

MissA came back from swimming (hence tatty hair), layed down on the floor with Zeus, wrapped her arms around him and gave him a huge hug. Zeus rested his head on her shoulder as if to say "Yeah I missed you too" ♥
It wasn't fair today. Nanny couldn't push the pushchair up this big hill so I had to walk - AND I have chicken pox! Nanny wasn't too pleased either. Mummy said that Nanny should make my sister walk the 3 miles home from school across the fields. Nanny said, 'Fancy expecting me to lift a pushchair over two stiles there and two back, not to mention the fallen down tree.....' I didn't tell her that normal Mummy doesn't take me, I stay home with Daddy, I think she forgot to tell Nanny that bit.
Possibly my favourite photo from our time looking after two grandchildren recently. I will catch up with you all asap, just a tad tired today after nearly two weeks of grandparent duties!

Dr Lyons, the Medical Officer for Todmorden, England is informed by a consultant at the Halifax General Infirmary that they have just diagnosed a patient with variola major smallpox, the deadliest kind, which carried a fatality rate of 30%.
There had been no smallpox locally for 15 years and no deaths since 1893. As a result vaccination rates are less than 50%. There is no time to wait for lab tests, lives are at risk. Dr Lyon orders a large supply of vaccine and sends out an urgent bulletin for doctors, to look out for smallpox and also report adult chickenpox too. The hospital ward was isolated, patients and staff told they must remain for 16 days. All used bedding and other items from the ward were daily sent down the fire escape to be burnt. The hospital and its grounds closed for 3 weeks.

During the Rikbaktsa “pacification” and soon after it, influenza, chickenpox and smallpox epidemics decimated 75% of a population, which was estimated in some 1.300 people at the time of contact. As a consequence, the Rikbaktsa lost most of their lands, and the majority of their small children were taken from the villages to be raised at the Utiariti Jesuit Boarding School, almost 200 kilometers from their homeland. There, the little Rikbaktsa were raised along with children of other indigenous groups also contacted by the missionaries. The surviving adults were gradually transferred from their original villages to larger ones, which were centralized under the Jesuit’s catechist administration.
:
In 1968, about 10% of the Rikbaktsa’s original territory were demarcated as the Erikbaktsa Indigenous Land; from then on their children began to be taken back to their villages, and missionary action concentrated in that area.
Since the end of the 1970s the Rikbaktsa have struggled to regain control over part of their traditional lands. However, it is still occupied by miners, timber companies and colonization companies.

“My Mom says we don’t need shots,” Becca announced, “because the diseases aren’t around anymore.”
“That’s pretty dumb,” Zoe observed, balancing precariously on her head. “The only reason the diseases stay away is because everyone keeps getting shots.”
“Did you just call my Mom dumb? Wet Willy!” Becca yelled, licking her finger and wiggling it in Zoe’s ear.
“Ah, stop! Ok I’m sorry,” Zoe squealed, losing her balance and tumbling to the ground. “I didn’t mean it! Ew! At least she didn’t make you go to a measles party! That was gross AND dumb.”
“Hahaa! No you’re right my Mom’s pretty dumb,” Becca admitted, turning a cartwheel on the grass. “Yours too. Isn’t it weird to be ten years old and know we’re already smarter than our parents?”
“I know! How did that hap-” Zoe interrupted herself, head cocked to one side. “That’s my Mom. I have to go to the funeral now.”
“Another one? Geez that’s like three this month,” Becca exclaimed.
“Yeah, and they’re so boring! But I’ll try to bring back some rice-krispie treats. Seeya!” Zoe turned a quick cartwheel then sprinted towards her house.
Becca waved until Zoe was out of sight, doubled over and coughed for a few minutes, then went back to play with her other friends on the playground.
